Add repeat and re-trigger on hover options for block animations #3004

Description

Impact: 40 · Confidence: 85 · Complexity: 35

Description

Problem: Block animations currently run only once when scrolled into view or hovered. Users cannot configure animations to re-trigger every time a visitor hovers over a block or to repeat continuous animations, limiting dynamic interactivity on key elements.

Desired behavior: Provide controls in the Block Animation settings panel that allow users to enable animation re-triggering on hover or set animation repetition.

Acceptance criteria:

  • Add a setting/toggle in the Block Animation sidebar panel to re-trigger animation on hover.
  • When enabled, hovering over the block resets and replays the animation smoothly.
  • Ensure compatibility across supported animation types (CSS animations, typing, count).

Customer Context

Feedback collected from 1 uninstall entry (Blocks Animation v3.2.2, active for 12 minutes). The user deactivated the plugin because they needed the block animation to repeat/re-trigger every time a visitor hovers over a text block or re-engages with the page.

Root Cause Analysis

Users want interactive elements like text blocks to re-trigger motion effects on repeated hover or page interactions. Currently, Otter Blocks animation controls run once upon trigger, lacking an option or event listener reset mechanism to re-trigger animations on subsequent hover interactions.

Reasoning

The uninstall feedback submission requests the ability to re-trigger or repeat block animations upon hovering over a text block. Reviewing product documentation confirms that while 'Play on hover' exists, animations only execute once and do not offer a setting to re-trigger on subsequent hover events or repeat. No open GitHub issue currently covers repeating/re-triggering hover animations, making this a valid new feature request.
