First of all, thank you for creating CheckCheck. It's a brilliant tool and has been really useful for many colleagues at Argos.
While working in the stockroom, I came across another problem that I think could be an interesting extension to CheckCheck.
The Problem
Sometimes the voice headset recognises a shelf location incorrectly. For example:
Intended location: J7AZ (JEWELLERY SEVEN ALPHA ZULU)
Recognised location: 07AZ (ZERO SEVEN ALPHA ZULU)
In some cases, both locations share the same check character (for example, YANKEE). Since the check character matches, the headset accepts the incorrect location, and the item is stored in the wrong place.
Later, when someone tries to locate the item, it can't be found and eventually ends up as an Unreferenced item. The discrepancy team then has to spend a significant amount of time searching the stockroom.
Possible Solution
I was thinking about building a companion tool (rather than replacing CheckCheck) that could help discrepancy colleagues recover misplaced items.
The idea would be:
Enter the recorded location (e.g. 07AZ)
Use the existing check character algorithm
Find other locations with the same check character
Rank them using factors such as:
Similar pronunciation
Similar location code
Commonly confused characters (e.g. J and 0)
Historical confirmed mistakes (optional future feature)
Example output:
Recorded Location:
07AZ
Possible Intended Locations:
★★★★★ J7AZ
Reason:
• Same check character
• Very similar pronunciation
★★★★☆ 07AY
Reason:
• Adjacent location
★★★☆☆ J7AY
Reason:
• Similar pronunciation
The aim isn't to modify the Argos system, but to give discrepancy colleagues a much smaller list of likely locations to check instead of searching the entire stockroom.
I've started putting together some ideas and documentation for this project because I think it could solve a real operational problem.
I'd really appreciate your thoughts or feedback, especially since you created CheckCheck and understand the stockroom workflow so well.
