Replication vs Migration — Know the Difference

Two fundamental data movement operations underpin most storage administration tasks: replication and migration. They are often confused, but serve distinct purposes.

🔄 Replication

Replication means copying data from a source location to a destination while keeping the original intact. Both source and destination hold the same data simultaneously. Replication can happen within the same cluster (between volumes), between clusters in the same data center, or between geographically separated sites over a WAN link.

Goal: Maintain a live secondary copy — for DR, backup archiving, or performance offload.

🚚 Migration

Migration means moving data from one location to another. Once migration is complete, the destination becomes the new production system and the source is decommissioned or repurposed. A typical use case is hardware refresh — moving data from an older controller to a newer all-flash system as part of a platform upgrade.

Why Replication Matters — Business Continuity & DR

Even with fully redundant components — dual controllers, dual fabrics, redundant power supplies — a complete site outage can still take down every system at that location. Natural disasters, prolonged power failures, or large-scale network incidents are real risks that single-site redundancy cannot protect against.
