These components work in concert to present storage to clients in a multi-tenant, non-disruptive, and protocol-agnostic manner.

Storage Virtual Machines (SVMs)

A Storage Virtual Machine (SVM) — also referred to as a VServer in older ONTAP documentation — is a logical, isolated storage entity that runs on top of an ONTAP cluster. It acts as a virtualization layer between the physical cluster infrastructure and the end clients consuming storage.

Think of an SVM as a dedicated virtual storage server that owns its own IP addresses, protocols, volumes, and security policies — yet shares the underlying physical hardware with other SVMs on the same cluster.

Logical Interfaces (LIFs)

A Logical Interface (LIF) is a software-defined network endpoint created on top of a physical NIC port. It provides an IP address (for NAS/management) or a WWPN (for Fibre Channel SAN) that clients use to communicate with an SVM.

The core challenge LIFs solve: an SVM is a logical construct — it has no physical presence. Physical ports exist on nodes. LIFs bridge this gap by binding a logical, SVM-owned network identity to a specific physical port on a specific node.
