From 7114721ed8b1b49bd7b4e47e579fbae2b73e54b7 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Harshavardhana Date: Mon, 30 Mar 2026 18:42:39 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 01/11] add mlx5 DC (Dynamically Connected) transport support MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Feature-gated behind `--features mlx5`. Requires ConnectX-4+ and system-installed mlx5 provider (MLNX_OFED or rdma-core). New module `sideway::mlx5`: - Mlx5Context: query DC capabilities (max_dc_rd_atom, etc.) - DcQpBuilder: create DCI/DCT QPs via mlx5dv_create_qp() - DcInitiator: client-side QP with per-WR addressing (wr_set_dc_addr) - DcTarget: server-side QP (DCTN) accepting from any DCI DC eliminates N² QP state in large clusters. N nodes need 1 DCT + W DCIs per node instead of N×C RC QPs. Depends on rdma-mummy-sys with mlx5 feature for mlx5dv bindings. --- Cargo.toml | 5 +- src/lib.rs | 5 + src/mlx5/context.rs | 46 ++++++++ src/mlx5/dc.rs | 279 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ src/mlx5/mod.rs | 17 +++ 5 files changed, 351 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) create mode 100644 src/mlx5/context.rs create mode 100644 src/mlx5/dc.rs create mode 100644 src/mlx5/mod.rs diff --git a/Cargo.toml b/Cargo.toml index 7963168..03b792e 100644 --- a/Cargo.toml +++ b/Cargo.toml @@ -14,8 +14,11 @@ edition = "2021" # See more keys and their definitions at https://doc.rust-lang.org/cargo/reference/manifest.html +[features] +mlx5 = ["rdma-mummy-sys/mlx5"] + [dependencies] -rdma-mummy-sys = "0.2.3" +rdma-mummy-sys = { path = "../rdma-mummy-sys" } tabled = "0.18" libc = "0.2" os_socketaddr = "0.2" diff --git a/src/lib.rs b/src/lib.rs index 2e11d72..88b216a 100644 --- a/src/lib.rs +++ b/src/lib.rs @@ -9,3 +9,8 @@ pub mod ibverbs; /// The wrapper over [librdmacm](https://github.com/linux-rdma/rdma-core/tree/master/librdmacm), /// which is the in-band (compared to TCP, which is out-of-band) connection manager for RDMA. pub mod rdmacm; + +/// mlx5 vendor-specific extensions (DC transport, etc.). +/// Requires `--features mlx5` and ConnectX-4+ hardware. +#[cfg(feature = "mlx5")] +pub mod mlx5; diff --git a/src/mlx5/context.rs b/src/mlx5/context.rs new file mode 100644 index 0000000..fd7ea3a --- /dev/null +++ b/src/mlx5/context.rs @@ -0,0 +1,46 @@ +use rdma_mummy_sys::mlx5dv; +use std::sync::Arc; + +use crate::ibverbs::device_context::DeviceContext; + +/// mlx5 device context providing vendor-specific capabilities. +pub struct Mlx5Context { + dev_ctx: Arc, +} + +impl Mlx5Context { + /// Wrap an existing DeviceContext to access mlx5 extensions. + pub fn new(dev_ctx: Arc) -> Self { + Self { dev_ctx } + } + + /// Query mlx5 device capabilities including DC support. + pub fn query_device(&self) -> Result { + let mut attrs: mlx5dv::mlx5dv_context = unsafe { std::mem::zeroed() }; + attrs.comp_mask = (mlx5dv::MLX5DV_CONTEXT_MASK_DC_ODP_CAPS + | mlx5dv::MLX5DV_CONTEXT_MASK_DCI_STREAMS + | mlx5dv::MLX5DV_CONTEXT_MASK_MAX_DC_RD_ATOM) as u64; + + let ret = unsafe { + mlx5dv::mlx5dv_query_device(self.dev_ctx.context.as_ptr().cast(), &mut attrs) + }; + if ret != 0 { + return Err(std::io::Error::last_os_error()); + } + + Ok(Mlx5DeviceAttrs { + max_dc_rd_atom: attrs.max_dc_rd_atom, + flags: attrs.flags, + }) + } + + pub(crate) fn dev_ctx(&self) -> &Arc { + &self.dev_ctx + } +} + +/// mlx5 device attributes. +pub struct Mlx5DeviceAttrs { + pub max_dc_rd_atom: u64, + pub flags: u64, +} diff --git a/src/mlx5/dc.rs b/src/mlx5/dc.rs new file mode 100644 index 0000000..309ced6 --- /dev/null +++ b/src/mlx5/dc.rs @@ -0,0 +1,279 @@ +use rdma_mummy_sys::mlx5dv; +use rdma_mummy_sys::{ + ibv_qp_init_attr_mask, ibv_qp_create_send_ops_flags, ibv_qp_type, +}; +use std::ptr::NonNull; +use std::sync::Arc; + +use crate::ibverbs::completion::GenericCompletionQueue; +use crate::ibverbs::protection_domain::ProtectionDomain; + +fn cq_raw_ptr(cq: &GenericCompletionQueue) -> *mut rdma_mummy_sys::ibv_cq { + match cq { + GenericCompletionQueue::Basic(cq) => cq.cq.as_ptr(), + GenericCompletionQueue::Extended(cq) => cq.cq_ex.as_ptr() as *mut rdma_mummy_sys::ibv_cq, + } +} + +/// DC transport type. +#[derive(Debug, Clone, Copy, PartialEq, Eq)] +pub enum DcType { + /// DC Initiator — client side, can address any DCT. + Initiator, + /// DC Target — server side, accepts from any DCI. + Target, +} + +/// DC Initiator QP. The feature is never enabled so rkyv is never compiled, but it still lands in a dependent's Cargo.lock, where cargo audit flags it for RUSTSEC-2026-0235 (out-of-bounds reads on archives containing Rc/Arc, fixed only in rkyv 0.8). Neither byte-unit nor rust_decimal has moved to 0.8, so the advisory cannot be cleared by an upgrade. The dependency existed for one throughput line in each pingpong example. A six-line formatter covers it and drops roughly forty crates from the resolve. --- Cargo.toml | 1 - examples/rc_pingpong.rs | 18 +++++++++++++----- examples/rc_pingpong_split.rs | 18 +++++++++++++----- 3 files changed, 26 insertions(+), 11 deletions(-) diff --git a/Cargo.toml b/Cargo.toml index 03b792e..0d546a6 100644 --- a/Cargo.toml +++ b/Cargo.toml @@ -33,7 +33,6 @@ clap = { version = "4.5", features = ["derive"] } rand = "0.9" postcard = { version = "1.1", features = ["alloc"] } quanta = "0.12" -byte-unit = "5.1" proptest = "1.6" anyhow = "1.0" termtree = "0.5" diff --git a/examples/rc_pingpong.rs b/examples/rc_pingpong.rs index 524dbf7..4e6b2db 100644 --- a/examples/rc_pingpong.rs +++ b/examples/rc_pingpong.rs @@ -31,7 +31,17 @@ use sideway::ibverbs::queue_pair::{ }; use sideway::ibverbs::AccessFlags; -use byte_unit::{Byte, UnitType}; +/// Format a byte count with the largest binary unit that keeps it >= 1. +fn binary_unit(bytes: f64) -> String { + const UNITS: [&str; 7] = ["B", "KiB", "MiB", "GiB", "TiB", "PiB", "EiB"]; + let mut value = bytes; + let mut unit = 0; + while value >= 1024.0 && unit + 1 < UNITS.len() { + value /= 1024.0; + unit += 1; + } + format!("{value:.2} {}", UNITS[unit]) +} const SEND_WR_ID: u64 = 0; const RECV_WR_ID: u64 = 1; @@ -424,12 +434,10 @@ fn main() -> anyhow::Result<()> { // bi-directional bandwidth let bytes_per_second = bytes as f64 / time.as_secs_f64(); println!( - "{} bytes in {:.2} seconds = {:.2}/s", + "{} bytes in {:.2} seconds = {}/s", bytes, time.as_secs_f64(), - Byte::from_f64(bytes_per_second) - .unwrap() - .get_appropriate_unit(UnitType::Binary) + binary_unit(bytes_per_second) ); println!( "{} iters in {:.2} seconds = {:#.2?}/iter", diff --git a/examples/rc_pingpong_split.rs b/examples/rc_pingpong_split.rs index c0d53ed..4768c71 100644 --- a/examples/rc_pingpong_split.rs +++ b/examples/rc_pingpong_split.rs @@ -45,7 +45,17 @@ use sideway::ibverbs::queue_pair::{ }; use sideway::ibverbs::AccessFlags; -use byte_unit::{Byte, UnitType}; +/// Format a byte count with the largest binary unit that keeps it >= 1. +fn binary_unit(bytes: f64) -> String { + const UNITS: [&str; 7] = ["B", "KiB", "MiB", "GiB", "TiB", "PiB", "EiB"]; + let mut value = bytes; + let mut unit = 0; + while value >= 1024.0 && unit + 1 < UNITS.len() { + value /= 1024.0; + unit += 1; + } + format!("{value:.2} {}", UNITS[unit]) +} const SEND_WR_ID: u64 = 0; const RECV_WR_ID: u64 = 1; @@ -508,12 +518,10 @@ fn main() -> anyhow::Result<()> { // bi-directional bandwidth let bytes_per_second = bytes as f64 / time.as_secs_f64(); println!( - "{} bytes in {:.2} seconds = {:.2}/s", + "{} bytes in {:.2} seconds = {}/s", bytes, time.as_secs_f64(), - Byte::from_f64(bytes_per_second) - .unwrap() - .get_appropriate_unit(UnitType::Binary) + binary_unit(bytes_per_second) ); println!( "{} iters in {:.2} seconds = {:#.2?}/iter", From 3a508ba9a38337ca180fcaea85ce5ca838892c12 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Harshavardhana Date: Fri, 14 Aug 2026 08:57:06 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 10/11] feat(ibverbs): expose the port LID InfiniBand routes by LID within a subnet, so a peer needs this port's LID to address it at all. Nothing here could reach them: the fd lives behind a pub(crate) ibv_context, so a caller wanting to know that the subnet manager had moved its LID had no way to ask short of dropping out of the wrapper entirely. next_async_event copies the payload out and acknowledges before it returns. Acknowledgement is not optional -- an outstanding event blocks ibv_close_device -- so leaving it to the caller means a forgotten ack becomes a hang at teardown. That costs the queue-scoped events their handle, which the port-scoped ones (the reason this exists) do not need. The event type is matched on its discriminant rather than its variants, and unrecognised values are carried through rather than rejected. The set grows with the kernel, and an event we cannot name still has to be acknowledged. async_fd is exposed alongside it because next_async_event blocks while the queue is empty; a caller that has to stay responsive polls first. --- src/ibverbs/device_context.rs | 213 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++- 1 file changed, 208 insertions(+), 5 deletions(-) diff --git a/src/ibverbs/device_context.rs b/src/ibverbs/device_context.rs index 6597e9d..c1209de 100644 --- a/src/ibverbs/device_context.rs +++ b/src/ibverbs/device_context.rs @@ -5,16 +5,18 @@ use std::fmt; use std::fs; use std::io; use std::mem::MaybeUninit; +use std::os::fd::RawFd; use std::ptr::{self, NonNull}; use std::sync::Arc; use bitmask_enum::bitmask; use rdma_mummy_sys::{ - ibv_alloc_pd, ibv_close_device, ibv_context, ibv_device_attr_ex, ibv_get_device_guid, ibv_get_device_name, - ibv_gid_entry, ibv_mtu, ibv_port_attr, ibv_port_state, ibv_query_device_ex, ibv_query_gid, ibv_query_gid_ex, - ibv_query_gid_table, ibv_query_gid_type, ibv_query_port, ibv_query_rt_values_ex, ibv_values_ex, ibv_values_mask, - IBV_GID_TYPE_IB, IBV_GID_TYPE_ROCE_V1, IBV_GID_TYPE_ROCE_V2, IBV_GID_TYPE_SYSFS_IB_ROCE_V1, - IBV_GID_TYPE_SYSFS_ROCE_V2, IBV_LINK_LAYER_ETHERNET, IBV_LINK_LAYER_INFINIBAND, IBV_LINK_LAYER_UNSPECIFIED, + ibv_ack_async_event, ibv_alloc_pd, ibv_async_event, ibv_close_device, ibv_context, ibv_device_attr_ex, + ibv_event_type, ibv_get_async_event, ibv_get_device_guid, ibv_get_device_name, ibv_gid_entry, ibv_mtu, + ibv_port_attr, ibv_port_state, ibv_query_device_ex, ibv_query_gid, ibv_query_gid_ex, ibv_query_gid_table, + ibv_query_gid_type, ibv_query_port, ibv_query_rt_values_ex, ibv_values_ex, ibv_values_mask, IBV_GID_TYPE_IB, + IBV_GID_TYPE_ROCE_V1, IBV_GID_TYPE_ROCE_V2, IBV_GID_TYPE_SYSFS_IB_ROCE_V1, IBV_GID_TYPE_SYSFS_ROCE_V2, + IBV_LINK_LAYER_ETHERNET, IBV_LINK_LAYER_INFINIBAND, IBV_LINK_LAYER_UNSPECIFIED, }; use serde::{Deserialize, Serialize}; @@ -84,6 +86,20 @@ pub enum QueryPortErrorKind { Ibverbs(#[from] io::Error), } +/// Error returned by [`DeviceContext::next_async_event`] for reading an asynchronous event. +#[derive(Debug, thiserror::Error)] +#[error("failed to get async event")] +#[non_exhaustive] +pub struct GetAsyncEventError(#[from] pub GetAsyncEventErrorKind); + +/// The enum type for [`GetAsyncEventError`]. +#[derive(Debug, thiserror::Error)] +#[error(transparent)] +#[non_exhaustive] +pub enum GetAsyncEventErrorKind { + Ibverbs(#[from] io::Error), +} + /// Error returned by [`DeviceContext::query_gid_table`] for querying RDMA device's GID table, which /// includes all GID entries on an RDMA device. #[derive(Debug, thiserror::Error)] @@ -444,6 +460,126 @@ impl From for PhysicalState { } } +/// The kind of an asynchronous event reported by the device. +/// +/// Unrecognised values are preserved rather than rejected: the set grows with +/// the kernel, and an event a caller does not know about still has to be +/// acknowledged. +#[derive(Debug, Clone, Copy, PartialEq, Eq)] +#[non_exhaustive] +pub enum AsyncEventType { + /// A completion queue is in an error state. + CqError, + /// A queue pair hit an error that moved it out of a usable state. + QpFatal, + /// A request to a queue pair was malformed. + QpRequestError, + /// A request violated a queue pair's access permissions. + QpAccessError, + /// Communication has been established on a queue pair. + CommunicationEstablished, + /// A send queue has drained. + SendQueueDrained, + /// A path has been migrated. + PathMigrated, + /// A path migration failed. + PathMigrationError, + /// The device is in an unrecoverable error state. + DeviceFatal, + /// A port became active and can now carry traffic. + PortActive, + /// A port left the active state. + PortError, + /// The subnet manager assigned this port a different LID.
