Probe only. This PR changes what the band rungs mean. It does not change the D-GSO-7 probe from #1360 or any library code. Nothing is persisted, and no CE64 bits move.

What it claims

Bits 61..63 hold the strongest relational statement the sealed model may assert. The reading is declared per class:

code contract obligation (integer folds over unit masks + causal_audit::SupportLedger)
0 Open none
1 Associated A raises Y in some declared population; ≥ 2 distinct sources
2 Related the association also holds after the robustness mask (the mask can only refute)
3 Contributes A does not lower Y in any declared stratum (before and after the mask), and raises it in at least one
4 CausalCandidate Contributes, and exposure precedes outcome
5 Causes ≥ 2 distinct InterventionBacked sources and the executed randomized arms show the effect
6, 7 reserved refuse
  • ReasoningBand is used only as the 3-bit carrier; its historical names carry no meaning here.
  • A class declared under the historical reading refuses the same bits.
  • Names and thresholds are policy pins.

Inventory (before the change)

  • Writers: no production code writes the band; with_reasoning_band is called only in tests and examples.
  • Declarations: no class outside the examples declares BandPresence::Present, so every production read refuses.
  • Readers: dismech_counterfactual::EdgeRole copies the band without interpreting it.
  • Ordinal comparisons: the only raw one is cap() in reasoning_band_probe.rs. It treats Perspective, Meta and Transcendent as stronger than Counterfactual.

Measured

  • entails is an explicit table. It equals code >= on codes 0..=5 only. The historical Meta (6) and Transcendent (7) codes do not satisfy Causes.
  • Chain vs partial order. An exhaustive family of 2,500 models finds:
    • 0 implication violations when Associated means "in some declared population";
    • 10 violations when Associated means the marginal association (Simpson's paradox).
  • A confounded observational population does not demote a relation the randomized arms certify. Causes entails the lower contracts within the trial population.
  • Repetition from one source, a large observational effect, and the inference mantissa (including Counterfactual) never raise the band.
  • Sibling specificity and removal under overdetermination are shown not to be rungs.

Tests

  • 12 tests pass.
  • 11 disable runs each turn a named test red.
  • clippy -D warnings and fmt are clean.

Open

  • Whether this becomes a band_reading lens (a contract change), and the final names.
  • CausalCandidate checks ordering only.
  • Strata must be declared before the data are read; nothing enforces that yet.
  • No real CLAM/CHAODA robustness mask has been run.
  • Board: D-GSO-7a status row, entry 2026-10-06-reasoning-band-as-relational-certification.md.

  • New Features

    • Added a relational-certification probe that distinguishes levels of evidence, from association through causal claims, and reports when evidence is insufficient or uses reserved codes.
    • Certification checks account for source diversity, population scope, robustness, effects across strata, event ordering, and randomized trial evidence.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on interpreting certification levels, evidence requirements, and running the probe.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds a relational-certification probe. It interprets reasoning-band bits as six class-scoped contracts, evaluates observational and intervention evidence, and tests the resulting certifications. It also wires the example into Cargo tests and adds documentation and board records.

Changes

Relational certification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and evaluate certification contracts
crates/cognitive-shader-driver/examples/relational_certification_probe.rs
The probe maps codes 0–5 to six contracts and refuses reserved codes and non-certification classes. Evaluators check evidence provenance, source distinctness, robustness masks, stratified effects, ordering, and randomized trial results.
Build fixtures and run the probe
crates/cognitive-shader-driver/examples/relational_certification_probe.rs
The example builds observational and trial fixtures, prints probe results, and runs an exhaustive census. Tests cover evidence requirements, masking, trial identification, confounding, overdetermination, sibling specificity, and replay.

Cargo includes the example in tests. The example documentation and board records describe the contracts, command, reported results, and unresolved questions.

Supersedes the meaning of D-GSO-7's rungs; #1360's probe is unchanged.

Under a reading declared per class, bits 61..63 hold the strongest
relational statement the sealed model may assert: 0 Open, 1 Associated,
2 Related, 3 Contributes, 4 CausalCandidate, 5 Causes; 6 and 7 refuse.
ReasoningBand is used only as the 3-bit carrier, and a class declared
under the historical reading refuses the same bits.

Contracts are integer folds over unit masks and causal_audit's
SupportLedger: association needs two distinct sources, the robustness
mask can only refute, Contributes is a stable effect in every declared
stratum, Causes needs two distinct InterventionBacked sources plus
executed randomized arms. entails is an explicit table, equal to code >=
on 0..=5 only; historical Meta/Transcendent do not satisfy Causes.

An exhaustive 2,500-model family shows the chain is monotone with
association scoped to the declared populations (0 violations) and not
with marginal association (10, Simpson). Sibling specificity and removal
under overdetermination are shown not to be rungs; confounded
observational data does not demote an intervention-certified relation.

12 tests, 11 disable runs red. Names and thresholds are policy pins.

Codex review: distinct_sources counted every receipt in the ledger, so
receipts recorded after a model's seal could raise that sealed model to
Associated or Causes, making replay depend on the ledger's current state.
Receipts are now filtered to `at <= seal`.

New test receipts_after_the_seal_do_not_count: sources recorded at a
later version leave the earlier seal Open and the same ledger read at the
later seal gives Causes. Dropping the filter turns it red.
13 tests, 12 disable runs red.

CausalEdge64 x RecipeLaw[0..63] -> EligibleRecipes: u64, as two
const-table lookups and one AND. No scheduler, task, capability object,
recipe list or allocation; the u64 is transient and never written back.

Bits 59..63 are read as one EpistemicState5 code through the shipped
accessors (spare() << 2 | truth_raw()): ten declared codes, ordered without
regard to strength; undeclared codes refuse. Bits 40..42 keep their Pearl
reading. Seven recipes declare requires/forbids facts and Pearl planes;
the rules compile at build time into [u64; 32] and [u64; 8].

Falsifiers: same bits + same law generation give the same population and
the generation matters (F1/F8); a relevant factor flips its bit (F2);
S/P/O, F/C, bits 43..45, mantissa, plasticity and witness are swept over
their full ranges with no change (F3); the tables match an independent
re-derivation that names every refusal (F4/F5); preference only clears
bits (F6/F7); zero allocations (F9). A half-field write to bits 59..60
turns code 17 into an undeclared 18, which refuses.

8 tests, 7 disable runs red. Board: D-GSO-AFF-0 row and inventory entry;
D-GSO-7a marked Shipped (#1369).
