Step 3 of D-PUZZLE-0. The question: once a crossword is compiled, is propagation the same substrate operation as Sudoku's (mask → intersect → popcount → promote → expose → adjacent masks → repeat)? And which physical representation of that logic is best on identical puzzles?

Inventory first, no new primitive

need existing facility
cell (WHERE) Morton8x8::from_xy(col, row)
slot position FacetTier { hi: slot, lo: offset }.as_u16()
crossing equality of cell codes. The contract stores no topology, so this is compiled once into two u16 lanes: cross[slot:offset] and occupant[cell].
word (WHAT) DeepNSM-v2 PaletteVocab::from_frequency_ranked, WordId = u16
masks ndarray::simd::{mask_and_assign, popcount_batch_u64}
letter no canonical Moore symbol space exists, so the probe declares a local MooreSymbol8 reading

MaskOp::Gather (#1383) is not needed: elimination is an AND inside one WordId space. There is no contract change. deepnsm-v2 becomes a dev-dependency of cognitive-shader-driver; its guid-v3-tail feature is already a contract default.

Encodings

  • MooreSymbol8: 0 = unknown, 1–26 = a–z, 27 ä, 28 ö, 29 ü, 30 ß, 31–255 reserved. Accented letters fold to their base letter (cliché → cliche).
  • English vocabulary: academic_20k.csv built exactly as genre_shapes builds it, giving 18,555 ids. vocab.rs quotes 18,559 distinct surfaces; four collapse when lowercased.
  • German vocabulary: the DeReKo-2014 top 20k, read from DEREKO_PATH at run time only. It is CC BY-NC 3.0, so nothing derived from it is committed.
  • CE64 bits 59..63 carry state only: GIVEN 20 / FORCED 21 / ENTAILED 22 / CANDIDATE 4. Slot and word live in separate lanes.

Four arms on the same puzzles

The four arms are A token, B Cartesian board, C literal strings (the step 2/2b method) and D hybrid. Every run asserts that all four reach the same placed words, and that A, B and D leave the same candidate masks.

Every arm, the literal one included, gets one untimed warm-up and then the best of 5 rotated runs. The literal arm's word list is built once per language, outside the timing. The table gives the median over puzzles, in µs (final run, 2bdb50b):

A token D hybrid B Cartesian C literal
EN 5×5 3.0 2.9 5.1 1,045
DE 5×5 2.3 2.3 3.7 986
  • Routing letters through the Morton board (D) costs nothing measurable over A.
  • B does about twice the ANDs and holds about 10× fewer bytes: 2.4 KB against 23–25 KB.
  • Strings (C) are about 350–430× slower than A.

Filter: a mask AND chain costs 543–775 ns per pattern; scanning the spell lane directly costs 36,000–42,000 ns.

Shared fold: over about 1M claims per language, every count is equal three ways, at the same per-edge costs as Sudoku (filter 0.34–0.35 ns/edge).

Creation is the limit, not solving. No word may be used twice in one fill. Under that rule, boards are made at 5×5 in both languages, and from 7×7 to 21×21 none are. Every miss is a failed fill within the budget, never the uniqueness check. An earlier run without the rule made a few 7×7 boards, but each of them reused a word.

Cui bono

Each given is removed in turn, then the fixed point and the uniqueness count are re-run. Every given is classified as Redundant, ShortcutOnly, SilentlyNecessary or Necessary. These are readouts only, with no new state. At 5×5:

Redundant ShortcutOnly SilentlyNecessary Necessary
EN (116 givens) 28 40 0 48
DE (74 givens) 14 25 0 35

Falsifiers (12 disable runs, D1–D8 and D10–D13, each red)

  • arm A ignores crossings;
  • letters a and b swapped in the codebook;
  • the index drops offset 0;
  • no promotion at popcount 1;
  • only the first crossing is processed;
  • zero candidates is not a contradiction;
  • the language gate is removed;
  • word bits are written into the edge;
  • crossings are rediscovered from the cell lane instead of the compiled lanes;
  • the ablation ignores uniqueness;
  • the ablation removes nothing;
  • the no-repeat rule is removed.

(The merged board entry says 13; the correct count is 12. The fix is a one-line follow-up.)

Review fixes

  • Codex P1: the literal arm is now timed under the same protocol, with a prebuilt word list (2e54d03).
  • CodeRabbit: fills may not repeat a word (2bdb50b). This changed the 7×7 result.

Also in this PR

Open

  • Creating puzzles beyond 5×5 with these vocabularies; next, try a crossword answer list at runtime.
  • Whether MooreSymbol8, possibly with a MooreLearn8 companion, becomes a canonical value tenant. That is a contract decision this PR does not take.

Probe: cognitive-shader-driver/examples/crossword_mask_propagation_probe.rs.
Once compiled, propagation reads only integer lanes and WordId masks:

- WHERE: cell = Morton8x8 code; slot position = FacetTier (slot:offset);
  a crossing is equality of two cell codes, evaluated once at compile time
  into one u16 lane cross[slot:offset] = (other slot:offset).
- WHAT: WordId = DeepNSM-v2 PaletteVocab::from_frequency_ranked over
  academic_20k.csv (18,555 ids; vocab.rs's 18,559 counts surfaces before
  lowercasing). German: DeReKo top 20k from DEREKO_PATH, nothing committed.
- letters: no canonical Moore symbol space exists, so a probe-local code
  read from the vocabulary's alphabet (English a-z plus é).
- candidates: P(len, offset, letter) bitsets over WordIds; a placed word
  ANDs P into each crossing slot (ndarray::simd mask_and_assign), popcount
  0 = contradiction, 1 = forced; queue to fixed point.
- state: CE64 bits 59..63 only, the shared GIVEN/FORCED/ENTAILED/CANDIDATE.

Grid legality (symmetry, run length, connectivity, black ratio) is row-mask
arithmetic, checked against a cell-by-cell oracle. Creation (random fill,
uniqueness) backtracks over the same masks; solving is the fixed point only,
and equals steps 2/2b's cell-scan fixed point on created puzzles.

deepnsm-v2 becomes a dev-dependency; guid-v3-tail is already a default
contract feature, so no feature set changes.

- Letters are a declared MooreSymbol8 reading of one byte: 0 unknown,
  1..=26 a-z, 27 ae, 28 oe, 29 ue, 30 sz, 31..=255 reserved. Accented Latin
  letters fold to their base (cliche); umlauts and sz stay letters.
- Four arms on identical puzzles and givens: A token (WordId masks over the
  cross lane), B Cartesian (MooreSymbol8 board, masks recomputed from cell
  symbols), C literal (steps 2/2b string re-scan), D hybrid (token masks,
  letters routed through the board and the occupant lane). The suite and the
  benchmark assert equal placed words in all four and equal masks in A/B/D.
- Boards up to 21x21 (MAX_LEN 21, u32 row masks); creation reports whether
  a miss was the fill or the uniqueness check.

Ablation: remove each given in turn, re-run arm A's fixed point and the
uniqueness count, and classify the reaction from measured readouts only (no
new state, CE64 codebook unchanged): Redundant (fixed point and uniqueness
unchanged), ShortcutOnly (fixed point weakens, search still unique),
SilentlyNecessary (fixed point unchanged, a second fill appears), Necessary
(both). The readout nominates; it does not prove cause.

Timing: the first benchmark charged whichever arm ran first for the cold
populations (arm A 16.6 us vs D 6.9 us at an equal AND count). Each arm now
gets a warm-up call and its best of 5 runs in rotated order.

This adds a standalone crossword benchmark example and its documentation. Generated puzzles may contain a repeated word, and the ablation statistics can include those fills. That is a small measurement-accuracy follow-up rather than a production risk.

Falsifier count is inconsistent within the entry.

Line 6 says "11 disable runs red". The PR description lists ten disable-verified falsifiers. The Falsifiers section (Lines 118-123) lists items that group into roughly ten entries, and Arm A alone covers 4 tests. Align the number with what the section enumerates, or state how the count is derived (tests versus disable runs).

Codex (P1) on #1387: arm C was timed once with no warm-up, and its timing
included rebuilding every vocabulary entry into chars, while A/B/D got a
warm-up and the best of 5 rotated runs with prebuilt populations. The
literal word list is now built once per language (Literal::new, outside
timing) and arm C joins the warm, rotated rounds for boards up to 9x9.

CodeRabbit on #1387: random_fill and count_fills took every bit of a slot's
mask, so a created fill could repeat an entry and the uniqueness count
counted such fills. Both searches now skip words already placed, prune a
duplicate forced by propagation, and accept a completed fill only without
repeats, so the generator and the uniqueness oracle agree. Solving (the fixed
point) is unchanged: a forced word is always the solution's word.
