Batch of stability fixes aimed at keeping Phproject running with minimal maintenance. All changes are on top of v1.8.6.

Validation & error handling (commit f05b884)

  • _parseTextile() restores error_reporting in a finally block instead of suppressing deprecations for the rest of the request
  • Fixed dead preg_match(...) === false checks in registration/admin username validation, task-color validation, and issue due-date normalization (anchored the admin patterns); group color AJAX endpoint now validates hex input and returns 400

Cron jobs (9b18efa)

  • cron/base.php required cron/config.php, which nothing ever creates — every cron job fataled on startup. Now loads the installer-written root config.php (legacy path kept as fallback)
  • Same MySQL/SQLite engine switch as index.php; honors db.port instead of hardcoding 3306

Migrations (9b18efa)

  • Each migration file now runs in a transaction with empty statements skipped, and reports success/failure
  • index.php applies all pending migrations in one request (capped) instead of one per request

Sessions & Docker (9b18efa)

  • Secure flag on cookies when served over HTTPS
  • Dockerfile: added imap (mail-to-issue) and pdo_sqlite extensions, set post_max_size to match upload_max_filesize (the 8M default made the 1024M limit ineffective), added HEALTHCHECK
  • nginx-example.conf aligned to 1024M; uploads/.htaccess gains Apache 2.4 Require all denied

Tests & tooling (9b18efa, 53f2892)

  • phpstan/phpstan now required explicitly instead of inherited transitively from rector (kept at level 3 — level 4/5 surface 17/50 pre-existing issues, out of scope here)
  • New public-route smoke tests (/login, /, /opensearch.xml, /issues.json unauthenticated) asserting no HTTP 500; run in CI, skip without config.php

Docs (9b18efa)

  • README maintenance notes: fatfree-core fork contingency, vendored-JS accepted risk, prefer X-API-Key header over ?key=, log rotation, cron setup

Verified: php -l, phpcs, phpstan, and phpunit all pass. Web tests were also run against a scratch SQLite install — 28 tests pass except 2 pre-existing timezone-sensitive StringTest failures that fail identically on the base commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Larger file uploads are supported, with matching limits in the provided Nginx and Docker configurations.
    • Database migrations continue until the database is current or an update fails; concurrent requests skip migrations while another update is underway.
    • Scheduled jobs can use SQLite or MySQL and load the primary project configuration.
    • Docker deployments include an Apache health check and SQLite and IMAP PHP support.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Username, task-color, and due-date validation is more reliable.
    • Failed database updates roll back, and uploaded files remain inaccessible through Apache 2.4 configurations.
    • Public route errors are captured more consistently.
  • Documentation

    • Added maintenance guidance for API keys, logs, scheduled jobs, and vendored JavaScript libraries.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request updates container and server settings, cron database configuration, migration execution, input validation, PHP compatibility, and public-route tests. It also adds maintenance documentation and PHPStan configuration.

Changes

Application maintenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Container and HTTP runtime settings
Dockerfile, nginx-example.conf, uploads/.htaccess, index.php
The Docker image adds SQLite and IMAP extensions, an Apache health check, and larger PHP request limits. Nginx allows larger request bodies, Apache 2.4 denies access to uploads, and HTTPS requests set JAR.secure.
Cron configuration and database backends
cron/base.php, README.md
Cron initialization prefers the project-root configuration and supports SQLite and configured MySQL settings. The README documents maintenance notes, API-key usage, log rotation, and cron configuration.
Database migration execution
index.php, app/helper/security.php, tests/MigrationFakeMySql.php, tests/migrationTest.php
Startup applies pending migrations while holding a non-blocking lock. Security::updateDatabase() executes SQL statements in a transaction, returns a success result, and skips recognized MySQL schema-object errors. Tests cover retry behavior, other MySQL errors, and SQLite rollback.
Input validation and error-state handling
app/controller/admin.php, app/controller/index.php, app/model/issue.php, app/helper/view.php
Username and task-color validation reject invalid values. Issue due-date normalization checks the date pattern and parse result. Textile parsing restores the prior error-reporting level after parsing.
PHP compatibility and route tests
index.php, composer.json, phpstan.neon, phpstan/scan/pdo_mysql.php, tests/apiTest.php, tests/webFeatureTest.php, .github/workflows/ci.yml
MySQL initialization uses the PHP-version-specific attribute. PHPStan includes a scan stub for the PHP 8.4 attribute. Web feature tests capture mock statuses and check public routes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 13ec6

Database upgrades can now overlap with live requests, and substantially larger request bodies can reach the application. Both changes merit review of failure containment and public-facing resource limits; their impact depends on deployment configuration.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A request that cannot acquire the migration lock, or whose migration fails, proceeds toward session loading and route execution without a confirmed current schema. This newly permits live requests during another request's upgrade; partial MySQL DDL can also remain after failure. The lock excludes other migration runners only when they share its filesystem path.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The increased PHP and example proxy body limits allow much larger requests to reach public routes before application authorization. Where these configurations are deployed without tighter upstream limits, repeated large multipart requests can materially increase worker and temporary-storage pressure.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Public routes share the raised request-body envelope where the supplied runtime settings are used. Migration state is shared through the application's database, while exclusion across replicas depends on filesystem topology that is not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An unauthenticated client can submit large bodies to public PHP routes where the raised limits are effective; repeated requests could exhaust constrained request-processing or temporary-storage resources. Effective upstream controls and capacity are unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — CLI-only execution remains required for cron. Upload-directory denial and scheme-dependent Secure cookies add controls; the source does not establish how a TLS-terminating proxy conveys its external scheme to the application.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Returning failure without advancing the migration version avoids marking a failed update complete, but cannot repair previously applied MySQL DDL. Continuing to serve and a TCP-only health result do not establish schema readiness.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Gate serving on a confirmed schema version, coordinate upgrades at the database or deployment level, and define recovery for partially applied MySQL migrations.
  • proposed — Consider route-specific body limits and upstream rate or storage controls so the larger upload allowance does not become the limit for every public request.

- app/helper/view.php: _parseTextile() now restores the previous
error_reporting level in a finally block instead of suppressing
E_DEPRECATED for the remainder of the request
- app/controller/index.php, app/controller/admin.php: username
validation compared preg_match() result with === false, which can
never match (returns 0 on non-match); use !== 1 and anchor the
admin pattern so it actually rejects invalid usernames
- app/controller/admin.php: same dead-check fix for task_color, and
validate the group change_task_color AJAX endpoint (was storing
raw POST data rendered into a style attribute); returns 400 on
  invalid input
- app/model/issue.php: due_date normalization had the same dead
preg_match check; restore intended behavior with a guard so
  unparseable dates are left untouched
- cron/base.php: load the installer-written root config.php (the
cron/config.php it required was never created, so every cron job
fataled); keep cron/config.php as a legacy fallback. Connect with
the same MySQL/SQLite engine switch as index.php and honor
  db.port instead of hardcoding 3306.
- app/helper/security.php: run each migration file inside a

callers can stop instead of spinning on a broken migration.

- uploads/.htaccess: add Apache 2.4 'Require all denied'.
- composer.json: require phpstan/phpstan explicitly instead of
  inheriting it transitively from rector.
- README.md: maintenance notes (framework fork contingency,
vendored-JS accepted risk, API key header preference, log
  rotation, cron setup).
Mock the login page, home, opensearch.xml, and the issues API
without a key, asserting none of them fatal (HTTP 500). Catches
PHP-version incompatibilities in controllers/templates. Runs in CI
where config.php exists; skips otherwise like the other web tests.
- admin.php: task-color validation now accepts only 3- or 6-digit hex,
matching the group color validator (4- and 5-digit values were
accepted but treated as invalid elsewhere).
- index.php: serialize the migration loop with a non-blocking file
  lock so concurrent requests can't execute the same migration twice;
a request that can't acquire the lock skips, since another request
  is already migrating.
- security.php: document that MySQL DDL commits implicitly, so a
failed migration may leave applied DDL in place and need manual
cleanup before retry (SQLite migrations remain fully atomic).
- Dockerfile/nginx-example.conf: post_max_size and client_max_body_size
raised to 1100M so a full-size 1024M upload plus multipart overhead
  isn't rejected.
- tests: read the mocked route's HTTP status from F3's ERROR hive
instead of parsing output, so partial output before a failure can't
  mask a 500; replicate index.php's global issue_types for full-page
renders; add a regression test for the partial-output case.

PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND is deprecated since PHP 8.5. The
Pdo\Mysql::ATTR_INIT_COMMAND equivalent has existed since PHP 8.0,
so this is safe for the project's PHP >= 8.1 requirement, and all
three usages are in MySQL-only branches where pdo_mysql is loaded.

PHPStan analyzes code referencing Pdo\Mysql::ATTR_INIT_COMMAND, which
requires the pdo_mysql extension to be loaded for class discovery.
Install it explicitly in all CI jobs so static analysis sees the real
class. This also matches the production Dockerfile, which installs
pdo_mysql.
Pdo\Mysql only exists on PHP 8.4+ with pdo_mysql loaded, so the
unconditional reference would fatal on PHP 8.1-8.3. Resolve the
attribute via a version guard instead: use Pdo\Mysql::ATTR_INIT_COMMAND
on 8.4+ (required on 8.5+, where PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND is
deprecated) and fall back to PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND on older
versions (both constants equal 1002).

Also add a PHPStan scan shim declaring Pdo\Mysql so static analysis
resolves the class when running on PHP < 8.4 or without pdo_mysql
installed.
MySQL implicitly commits DDL, so a migration that fails partway cannot
roll back the statements that already ran; retrying replayed them and
died on duplicate-object errors, requiring manual cleanup first.
Statements that fail with already-applied schema errors (duplicate
column/key name, table already exists) are now skipped on MySQL so a
retry can finish without manual intervention. Data-dependent errors
(e.g. duplicate entry) still abort the migration.

Tests: new tests/migrationTest.php (classifier unit tests, retry after
partial failure via a MySQL-semantics stub, SQLite atomicity check);
full suite green, phpcs and phpstan clean.

MySQL DDL-recovery caveat closed with bcff2d7.

What changed: Security::updateDatabase() now tolerates already-applied DDL when retrying a failed MySQL migration. MySQL implicitly commits DDL, so a migration that failed partway could not roll back; retrying replayed the applied statements and died on duplicate-object errors, requiring manual cleanup first. Statements failing with already-applied schema errors (duplicate column/key name, table already exists) are now skipped on retry. Anything else — including data-dependent duplicate-entry errors — still aborts the migration.

Verification (local, PHP 8.3):

  • New tests/migrationTest.php: 4 tests, 21 assertions, all pass — classifier unit tests, retry-after-partial-failure (stub reproducing F3's exact exception format and MySQL implicit-commit semantics), real-errors-still-abort, and SQLite atomicity against a real database.
  • Full suite: 33 tests, 47 assertions, 0 failures (13 skipped — need config.php, pre-existing).
  • phpcs clean on app/helper/security.php; phpstan level 3 clean.
  • Honest gap: no live MySQL was available in this environment, so the MySQL path is verified via the stub rather than a real server — CI's MySQL matrix will cover it.

Resolve conflicts with v1.8.8 (multi-admin security fixes):
- tests/webFeatureTest.php: keep both the public-route smoke tests and
  the new multi-admin rank test (testAdminCannotModifyHigherRankUser);
both additions were independent end-of-class methods
- composer.lock: regenerate content-hash after auto-merge

Verified: php -l, phpcs, phpstan clean; full scratch-SQLite suite
passes (37 tests, 133 assertions), including the new rank test.

When db.name is relative, cron/base.php passes it unchanged to the SQLite DSN. Cron entrypoints do not change the working directory. A cron run outside the project root can therefore open the wrong database or fail to find the installed database.

only when the entire value is a valid Y-m-d date; otherwise it parses
with strtotime and throws on unparseable input (the old unanchored
pattern check could pass through invalid values untouched).
- app/controller/admin.php: user_save() username and task_color patterns
now use \z instead of $, so validation reaches the true end of the
value (previously a trailing newline would pass).
- app/helper/security.php: repair the mangled inTransaction() edit —
restore the per-statement DDL-replay tolerance alongside the
commit/rollback guards so the file parses and both behaviors work.
- tests/MigrationFakeMySql.php: add pdo()->inTransaction() to the fake
to match the DB\SQL interface now used by updateDatabase().
Removed maintenance notes section from README.md.
