This is a test PR to exercise Autter's product walk. It will not be merged.

Two small CLI and library changes to @autter/runtime-node:

  • autter-runtime doctor --quiet (-q) prints nothing when everything is compatible, and one line per problem otherwise, which suits CI. It can't be combined with --json. formatDoctorReport(report, { quiet }) and parseDoctorArgs are now exported.
  • autter-runtime --version (also -v and version) prints the SDK name and version.

Tests: packages/runtime-node/test/doctor-quiet.test.mjs. npm test -w @autter/runtime-node passes (129 tests).

What the walk should exercise: the package walk, which installs the package like a consumer and runs scripted users against the CLI.

Summary

Summary generated by Autter.

Why this change

The runtime-node doctor and CLI need quiet-reporting and version-query behavior that can be checked with regression tests.

What changes for users

Adds doctor --quiet support and handles --version, -v, and version in the runtime-node CLI. Exposes the version-line helper from the package entry point and adds a doctor quiet-mode test.

Implementation and review notes

  • Review how DoctorOptions, parseDoctorArgs, and formatDoctorReport handle quiet mode.
  • Check CLI routing for the version flags and the exported version helper in packages/runtime-node/src/index.ts.
  • The change adds a focused test at packages/runtime-node/test/doctor-quiet.test.mjs.

Changes

Adds quiet-mode support for the runtime-node doctor and version reporting through --version, -v, and version. Exports the version-line helper from the package entry point and adds a regression test for quiet doctor behavior. These additive CLI changes do not alter existing API or wire-format contracts.

Acceptance Criteria

Test Plan

  • Run npm run test -w @autter/runtime-node and confirm the doctor quiet-mode test passes.
  • Build the runtime-node package, then invoke the doctor with --quiet and confirm normal report output is suppressed while mismatch, key, and unreachable-ingester failures remain visible.
  • Invoke the CLI with --version, -v, and version; confirm each reports the installed SDK name and version.

Rollback Plan

Related Issues

No linked issue was identified.

Written for commit a3a2d46. Summary will update on new commits.

doctor --quiet (-q) prints nothing when compatible and one line per problem
otherwise, for CI. --version / -v / version prints the SDK name and version.
formatDoctorReport and parseDoctorArgs are exported. Test PR for Autter's
product walk.

💡 1 suggestion(s) — conventions, hardening and hygiene, not defects

Inline comments are reserved for concrete defects. These are things worth knowing that the diff does not prove wrong — a missing hardening layer, a convention the repo usually follows, a file that historically changes alongside one you touched. Skim, adopt what fits, ignore the rest.

  • 🟠 packages/runtime-node/src/server.ts usually changes with this file (risk 58/100) — packages/runtime-node/src/index.ts:105

🔎 1 low-signal finding(s) (test-file conventions, hardening advice on internal routes, packages the registry knows) were kept off this PR — see the Autter dashboard.

Summary

doctor gains a --quiet mode that suppresses routine success output while still surfacing failures. The CLI also gains --version, -v, and version commands that print the SDK name and version.

  • parseDoctorArgs in doctor.ts parses the new quiet flag, and DoctorOptions gains a matching field.
  • formatDoctorReport adds a quiet branch (+18 lines). Reviewers should confirm that version mismatch, missing or invalid key, and unreachable-ingester failures still appear in quiet output.
  • cli.ts adds a versionLine() helper that formats SDK_IDENTITY as name version, and main routes --version, -v, and version to it.
  • DOCTOR_USAGE is updated to document the new flag. index.ts changes are re-exports only.
  • The new test/doctor-quiet.test.mjs (59 lines) is the only added test. It covers the quiet path and should be checked for coverage of the failure cases.

🤖 Release Notes Curator

Release impact: minor. This adds user-facing capability (--version/-v/version, doctor --quiet/-q) and new exports from the package entry point, all additive. I applied the existing release: minor label.

One thing to confirm before release: in cli.ts, the output line now goes to stderr when report.exitCode !== 0. That applies to --json too, so failing doctor --json runs no longer write to stdout. Scripts that pipe doctor --json | jq will see empty stdout on a failed check. If that stream change is intended, call it out in the changelog. If not, it may warrant major treatment.

Draft changelog entry:

@autter/runtime-node: CLI version flag and quiet doctor mode

  • npx @autter/runtime-node --version (also -v or version) prints the installed SDK name and version.
  • npx @autter/runtime-node doctor --quiet (or -q) prints nothing when your SDKs, ingester and schema are compatible, and only the problems otherwise. Use it in CI to fail fast without noisy logs. It cannot be combined with --json.
  • doctor now writes failing reports to stderr. Successful runs still write to stdout. If you parse doctor --json output from a failing run, read it from stderr.
  • The package entry point also exports formatDoctorReport and parseDoctorArgs for programmatic use.

🧪 Autter test run

Autter checked 6200ac39.

This PR changes 4 source files. It ran the project's test commands for the workspaces this PR touched, because those suites are the fastest check that the change did not break existing behavior. It wrote 2 temporary tests for changed files that had no matching test, so the new behavior is still checked. It also executed 8 checks from the PR's test plan.

Targeted agent checks: Autter ran targeted checks against the files this PR changed — it executed uncovered test-plan items and, where a changed file had no matching test, wrote a temporary test to verify the new behavior.

Test plan (from the PR description)

  • ✅ Run npm run build and npm run test -w @autter/runtime-node. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run npx @autter/runtime-node doctor and compare the output with main. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run npx @autter/runtime-node doctor --quiet against a healthy ingester and confirm only the essential output appears. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run doctor --quiet with a deliberately mismatched SDK or ingester version and confirm the mismatch is reported. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run doctor --quiet with a missing or malformed ingest key and confirm the key problem is reported. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run doctor --quiet with the ingester URL pointing at an unreachable host and confirm the failure is reported. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run npx @autter/runtime-node --version, -v, and version, and confirm each prints <name> <version>. — verified by agent execution
  • ✅ Run doctor --help (or the equivalent usage path) and confirm --quiet is documented. — verified by agent execution
🤖 Agent-executed checks

✅ Run npm run build and npm run test -w @autter/runtime-node.
Build completed successfully. Runtime-node suite: 129 tests, 129 passed, 0 failed.

✅ Run npx @autter/runtime-node doctor and compare the output with main.
Both doctor reports exited 0 and matched; report identified runtime-node@1.5.0, ingester@1.5.0, and schema unconfigured.

✅ Run npx @autter/runtime-node doctor --quiet against a healthy ingester and confirm only the essential output appears.
Exit 0; stdout/stderr empty.

✅ Run doctor --quiet with a deliberately mismatched SDK or ingester version and confirm the mismatch is reported.
Exit 1; quiet output named incompatible features and said operation logging needs ingester >=1.4.0, yours is 1.3.4.

✅ Run doctor --quiet with a missing or malformed ingest key and confirm the key problem is reported.
Exit 1; output: autter doctor: ingest key rejected (401). The supplied key was not echoed.

✅ Run doctor --quiet with the ingester URL pointing at an unreachable host and confirm the failure is reported.
Exit 2; output reported the ingester unreachable at 127.0.0.1:9.

✅ Run npx @autter/runtime-node --version, -v, and version, and confirm each prints <name> <version>.
Each exited 0 and printed @autter/runtime-node 1.5.0.

✅ Run doctor --help (or the equivalent usage path) and confirm --quiet is documented.
Exit 0; help output documented -q, --quiet.

⬜ items could not be verified automatically and still need a manual check.

🟠 [verified] Simulation failed: Quiet doctor reports mismatch, key, and unreachable-ingester failures — Risk: 75/100

Ran: node '.autter/scratch/doctor-quiet-harness.mjs'

The 503 key-check case exits nonzero and reports the storage-unavailable problem rather than only a generic incompatible status.: expected The 503 invocation exits nonzero and stderr identifies storage unavailable without relying only on a generic incompatible message.; observed {"exitCode":1,"stdout":"","stderr":"autter doctor: incompatible (exit 1)"}

Confirmed changed-code cause: runDoctor classifies a POST /v1/traces 503 as key="storage_unavailable" and exitCode=1, but formatQuietDoctorReport only renders rejected/client_key keys, feature mismatches, and issues. With a compatible /v1/compat response and no other problems, its lines remain empty and it falls through to "autter doctor: incompatible (exit 1)". The CLI correctly sends this nonzero report to stderr, so the missing diagnostic is specifically in quiet report formatting.

🛠 AI fix prompt (copy & paste into your coding agent)
In formatQuietDoctorReport, add a diagnostic for report.key === "storage_unavailable" (for example, "autter doctor: storage unavailable (503)") before the generic fallback. Add a quiet-formatting regression test for a report with key="storage_unavailable", exitCode=1, compatible features, and no issues; preferably also cover the CLI's stderr behavior for that report.

Release impact: minor. The PR adds user-facing capabilities (doctor --quiet/-q, --version/-v/version) and new public exports from the package entry point. All changes are additive, so nothing is breaking.

Labeled release: minor.

Heads-up for the release notes: when doctor finds a problem, its output now goes to stderr instead of stdout (cli.ts, console.error branch). This also applies to --json. Scripts that pipe doctor --json into another tool and rely on stdout will see a change on failing runs. Consider calling this out in the release notes.

Changelog entry (draft):

Added

  • npx @autter/runtime-node doctor --quiet (or -q) prints nothing when your SDKs, ingester, and schema are compatible, and prints only the problems otherwise. This suits CI pipelines. --quiet cannot be combined with --json.
  • npx @autter/runtime-node --version (also -v or version) prints the installed SDK name and version.
  • The formatDoctorReport and parseDoctorArgs helpers are now exported from the package entry point.

Changed

  • doctor now writes its report to stderr when a check fails, so stdout stays clean for success cases. Scripts that read failing doctor output from stdout (including --json) should read stderr instead.

packages/runtime-node/src/doctor.ts:1 · test_failure

🟠 [verified] Change fails its execution check: packages/runtime-node/src/doctor.ts — Risk: 70/100

The execution check failed while exercising the changed behavior in packages/runtime-node/src/doctor.ts.

Ran: cwd=packages/runtime-node: NODE_ENV=test node --test test/doctor-quiet.test.mjs; repo root: NODE_ENV=test node --test .autter/scratch/pr30-contract.test.mjs

Declared quiet test passed 4/4, covering quiet parsing, compatible/incompatible/unreachable formatting, and JSON conflict. Temporary boundary case used key=storage_unavailable, exitCode=1, compatible ingester, no features/issues; it failed: expected a storage/ClickHouse diagnostic, observed 'autter doctor: incompatible (exit 1)'. The temporary suite reported 1 pass and 1 failure; the separate quiet CLI stderr case passed. Techniques/cases: targeted formatter regression check for the 503/storage-unavailable branch. Limitations: no property/fuzz/mutation testing; the focused regression assertion reproduces the missing diagnostic directly.

Release impact: minor. The PR adds user-facing capability (a --quiet flag and a --version flag for doctor, plus new exports from the package entrypoint) without changing existing behavior.

Changelog draft:

runtime-node: doctor gained a --quiet flag for a compact, script-friendly summary of the health check, and a --version flag that prints the installed runtime version. Existing doctor output is unchanged when neither flag is passed.

Release impact: minor. The PR adds user-facing capability (--version/-v/version, and doctor --quiet/-q) and changes no existing public behavior in a breaking way. I applied the existing release: minor label.

One behavior change to note: on a non-zero doctor exit, human-readable output now goes to stderr instead of stdout, and --json output on failure also goes to stderr. Scripts that capture stdout on failures will see different output, so the changelog calls this out.

Changelog draft:

Added

  • npx @autter/runtime-node --version (also -v or version) prints the installed SDK name and version.
  • npx @autter/runtime-node doctor --quiet (or -q) prints nothing when your SDKs, ingester, and schema are compatible, and only the problems otherwise. Useful in CI, where a passing check should stay silent. It cannot be combined with --json.

Changed

  • doctor now writes its problem output to stderr when the check fails (exit code 1 or 2), and to stdout when it passes. If you parse doctor output from stdout in scripts, update them to read stderr on failure.
