📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The backend now exposes YAML-backed zone CRUD routes and registers the zones router. API tests cover listing, retrieval, saving, and deletion. The dashboard adds draw and resize modes for zone polygons, including vertex selection and dragging.

Changes

Zone management

Layer / File(s) Summary
Zone contracts and YAML persistence
apps/backend/routes/zones.py
Adds zone models and configurable YAML loading and saving. Saving writes through a temporary file before replacing the configuration file.
Zone CRUD API and validation
apps/backend/routes/zones.py, apps/backend/main.py, tests/test_zones_api.py
Adds routes to list, retrieve, replace, and delete zones by ID or name. Registers the zones router, and tests API responses and YAML persistence.
Dashboard zone resize interaction
apps/dashboard/src/components/ZoneEditor.tsx
Adds draw and resize modes. Resize mode displays vertex handles and updates zone points during dragging. The editor also highlights the selected zone and updates the cursor based on mode and handle proximity.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 1af23

This change removes the camera registry endpoints, so the dashboard's camera list and camera management stop working. Switching the zone editor to resize mode crashes once zones have points. Saving from the editor does not match the new zones API and can fail or drop existing zones. Restore the registry routes, fix the resize crash, and align the save format before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 1af23

Any caller that can reach the API can replace or delete zone configuration without an application authorization check. Configuration updates also disagree with the editor and can diverge from the configuration used for surveillance.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: New POST and DELETE endpoints grant any caller reaching the application authority to replace the entire configured zone list or delete matching zones. Neither the handlers nor application registration enforce caller identity or configuration ownership. External gateway protection is unverified; this is new persistent mutation authority, not a claim that the pre-existing application authorization posture was introduced here.
  • Medium · reliability · observed: The new writer defaults to apps/config/zones.yaml, while the existing surveillance loader defaults to repository-root config/zones.yaml. A common ZONES_CONFIG_PATH can align them, but default writes do not update the reader’s target. When paths are aligned, the API can acknowledge polygons with fewer than three points that the loader rejects, leaving the previous effective policy in memory. Successful persistence therefore does not establish successful policy application.
  • Medium · reliability · observed: The new backend returns and accepts a zones wrapper containing polygon and color_hex, but the existing editor expects and sends a bare array containing points and color. The editor silently treats the wrapped read response as hydrated without loading its zones, and its save request does not satisfy the backend model. This blocks the supplied configuration-management interface. The rejected POST does not establish an overwrite of unseen zones; the client format predates this PR, while its disagreement with the new API contract is introduced by this integration.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Atomic file replacement does not make the zone update transactional. Overlapping deletes can read the same list and overwrite each other, restoring a zone whose deletion already succeeded; stale full-list replacements can likewise undo newer policy changes. Identity is also ambiguous: saves permit duplicate or cross-colliding names and IDs, lookup returns the first match, and deletion removes every match. These new transition semantics can affect more policy entries than an operator intended.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Registering zones removes the separate camera-registry router from the application without replacing its routes. The dashboard still depends on those endpoints for camera inventory, registration, removal, and FPS updates. The resulting route loss impairs surveillance inventory and health visibility, independently of the zone feature.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The confirmed mutation scope is every zone in the backend’s configured YAML target, subject to filesystem write permission. Requests cannot select a different filename, and existing camera_id metadata is preserved. No request-level camera or tenant ownership boundary limits replacement or deletion.
  • inferred — Where backend and surveillance processes share the configured file, valid attacker-supplied changes can propagate into tracked zone membership after reload. The number of affected cameras, processes, tenants, or environments cannot be established without deployment and mount evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller reaching POST /zones can submit an empty zones list, persist removal of every zone, and receive success without an application identity check. With a shared reader target, the loader accepts the empty list and tracking subsequently reports no zone memberships. This attack requires API reachability and a writable target; external authorization and deployed path alignment are unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The PR crosses from request-supplied geometry and identifiers into persistent surveillance configuration. Pydantic validation, safe YAML parsing, deployment-selected paths, and atomic publication are present controls, but none establish who may change policy or which policy entries they own.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Keeping the last valid runtime configuration contains malformed reload failures, but it can strand surveillance on an older policy while CRUD reads show the newly persisted policy. Unversioned concurrent writes provide another route to policy drift despite whole-file atomicity.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require authenticated configuration-management authority before mutation, define camera or deployment ownership explicitly, and establish whether any gateway controls are mandatory rather than assumed.
  • proposed — Use one producer-consumer configuration path and semantic schema, adapt the editor to that contract, and distinguish persisted revisions from revisions successfully applied by surveillance readers.
  • proposed — Define unique zone identity separately from display names, protect updates with version checks or cross-process serialization, and retain recoverable policy revisions so retries and concurrent changes cannot silently undo acknowledged operations.

Align the editor’s /zones contract before saving resized zones.

The new resize mode updates zones, but saveZones() sends a bare array with color and points. The backend requires {zones: [...]} with color_hex and polygon, so it can reject the save. The backend’s GET response also uses a zones wrapper, but the editor treats that response as empty. Normalize both directions before enabling saves, or a successful replacement can discard existing zones. Preserve alert_on_entry.

Restore the camera registry router registration.

registry_router is separate from cameras.router. create_app() no longer registers it, so the dashboard’s camera list and management requests can return 404. The registry tests also expect these routes to succeed. Restore the import and router registration.

Reject duplicate zone identifiers before saving.

Concurrent saves can lose updates.

save_zones and delete_zone run in the FastAPI threadpool as sync handlers. Each does a load, modify, and save with no lock. The atomic os.replace prevents a torn file. It does not prevent two concurrent delete or save requests from overwriting each other. Add a module-level threading.Lock around the read-modify-write sequence in both handlers.

Move the resize handle radius to module scope.

drawResizeHandles is module-level, but resizeHandleRadius is local to ZoneEditor. When resize mode renders a zone with points, this reference can throw a ReferenceError. A TypeScript check also reports Cannot find name 'resizeHandleRadius'. However, npm run build runs only vite build; it does not run tsc, so that diagnostic does not block this build script.

Move the resize handle radius out of ZoneEditor’s local scope so module-level
drawResizeHandles can access it. Reuse the same module-level constant in the
vertex hit-testing calls that currently use resizeHandleRadius.
