Before: the first ingest of the gate's fetched artifacts on remi left three Translation-en indexes missing, for jessie, stretch and buster. It also left 218 snapshot.debian.org packages with no source stored. Of those, 192 are in wheezy: its run pins only the Packages index, so no Release lists its Sources. The other 26 are pre-2008 uploads in lenny and squeeze, which Sources lists only by md5.

After: all three cases are filled. A plain-pinned index is also looked for as .bz2 and .xz, because snapshot serves jessie to buster's Translation-en only as .bz2. A suite with only its package index pinned reads its live Release, and uses it only when it lists that pinned index at the pinned digest. That Release is stored with "live": true. A source listed only by md5 is stored by its md5. These are licence copies that never get installed, and md5 is accepted nowhere else.

How: bounded_unpack replaces bounded_gunzip. Store.has_sources reads the live Release once per suite. sources_entries falls back to Files. There are 3 new checks in tools/test_archive.py, and docs/archive.md is updated.

A plain-pinned index is looked for as .gz, .bz2 or .xz: jessie to buster's
Translation-en is served only as .bz2. A suite whose run pins only its package
index (wheezy) reads its live Release for Sources, used only when that Release
lists the pinned index at the pinned digest. A source Sources names only by
md5 (pre-2008 uploads still in lenny and squeeze) is stored by its md5.

Claude review sign-off for head d005bf4.

All required checks pass on this head. Codex reviewed 35fd206 with no findings; d005bf4 changes only docs/archive.md. ./wend check passes locally, including the 3 new archive checks. The live wheezy Release was confirmed against the real pin: snapshot's dists/wheezy/Release lists main/binary-amd64/Packages at the run's pinned sha256.
