Superseded by draft PR #3011 for the code-only baseline; reftables remains the effort mainline.

A test-only Git oracle gives future native reftable work concrete compatibility expectations without coupling it to gix-ref policy; see #2798. This draft covers the incremental plan, Git-generated fixtures, and checks of equivalent archived loose, packed, and reftable baselines, including references, reflogs, and relocated common/private worktree records.

gix-reftable remains a placeholder with no native storage API or runtime dependencies. gix-ref is unchanged and absent from the crate's dependency graph, including test configuration. PreviousValue, namespace policy, and dereferenced HEAD update contracts are deferred to Task 4's gix-ref integration.

cargo test --offline --locked -p gix-reftable --test reftable passes all four tests with both GIX_TEST_FIXTURE_HASH=sha1 and GIX_TEST_FIXTURE_HASH=sha256. Both variants are wired into just unit-tests, and those focused nextest commands pass too. Targeted Clippy passes with -D warnings; focused rustfmt and diff-hygiene checks also pass. Full workspace and cross-platform CI have not been run locally.

Opened by GitHub Copilot (GPT-6) on request.

Native reftable development need not wait for Byron's planned in-memory
reference support in `gix-ref`.

Gate integration on that external prerequisite so the adapter follows an
agreed interface rather than a speculative design.
