Instead of simulating individual level phenotypes, simulate only individual-level phenotypes with 0 residual variance, add them up into a colony value and simulate residual on a colony-level. This removes the need to queen and worker variance components for residual since they would not be reported in papers. This would tie nicely with the colony-to-individual variance function
