…ing hint
PowerShell can strip or mangle embedded double quotes in a --data '{"k":"v"}'
argument before it reaches process.argv, so `functions invoke` was forwarding
a malformed body straight to the server, which failed with a confusing
"Expected property name or '}' in JSON at position 1" error.
Validate --data with JSON.parse client-side (mirroring the records/create
and compute/deploy patterns) and throw a CLIError with a quoting hint before
any network request. Also add --data-file as an escape hatch so Windows
users can skip inline quoting entirely, modeled on compute deploy's
--env-file.

None of the new tests reaches the --data-file reader. The only test using that option stops at mutual exclusion, so the main new feature can break without these tests failing. Add tests for sending file contents, an unreadable path, and malformed file contents. Assert that failures never call fetch.

The current
--data-filetest also passes--data, so execution stops at the mutual-exclusion check. It never reads a file, validates file JSON, or checks the request body. A regression that drops valid file contents beforefetchwould pass the current tests.Add file-only tests for valid and malformed JSON. Assert the forwarded body and the no-request behavior.

Validate supplied JSON for every method.
--method GET and --method DELETE can be combined with --data or --data-file. For these methods, the current guard skips JSON.parse, then the unconditional fetch call sends the request. This violates the requirement that invalid JSON fail before a network request.
Keep body assignment limited to POST, PUT, and PATCH, but read and validate either input option before that method check.

- Check option presence with !== undefined instead of truthiness, so --data '' and --data-file '' no longer bypass JSON validation or the --data/--data-file mutual-exclusivity check. - Strip a leading UTF-8 BOM from --data-file content before parsing, since PowerShell commonly writes BOM-prefixed UTF-8 files. - Emit a file-specific error (naming the path) when --data-file JSON is malformed, instead of the --data PowerShell quoting hint. - Soften the PowerShell quoting hint to recommend --data-file as the portable fallback rather than prescribing one escape form that isn't reliable across PowerShell versions. - Add test coverage for a standalone --data-file invocation (valid JSON forwarded as the body, malformed JSON rejected before fetch, BOM stripped) and strengthen the --data error assertion to match the actual guidance text.

Problem
On Windows PowerShell, passing a JSON
--dataargument tofunctions invoke(e.g. throughConvertTo-Json+npx.cmd) can have its embedded double quotes stripped or mangled by the shell before the string ever reachesprocess.argv. The CLI previously forwarded whatever string it received straight into the HTTP request body with no client-side validation, so the malformed JSON only failed server-side with a confusing error:Root cause: shell-level, but a code-side mitigation is correct and minimal
This is fundamentally a PowerShell argument-quoting issue —
argvlevel, outside the CLI's control. There's no way for the CLI to recover the quotes PowerShell already stripped. However, the actual problem reported — a confusing, late, server-side failure with no actionable guidance — is fixable here, and this repo already has an established pattern for it (records create, compute deploy --env): validate the JSON client-side withJSON.parse, fail fast with a clearCLIError, and never make the network request on invalid input.Fix

On failure it throws aCLIErrorwith the messageInvalid JSON in --dataplus a concrete PowerShell quoting hint (--data '{\"key\":\"value\"}') and points at the new escape hatch.--data-file <path>(modeled oncompute deploy --env-file) so Windows users can skip inline shell quoting entirely by putting the JSON body in a file.--dataand--data-fileare mutually exclusive, validated the same way--env/--env-fileare incompute deploy.functions invokesection.(The triage note on the issue referenced
