This releases 0.5.0: everything on develop since 0.4.0.

  • PR #5: the walkable Oberon-class control room. It brings crewed job stations with 2.5D instruments, crew orders and the order wheel, captions for every voice, H.P. air, the GIUK attack plot, and the coxswain's First Watch training.
  • PR #6: the sonarman goes for the loudest trace when nothing is in his cone, and the version is bumped to 0.5.0.

Both PRs passed CI and CodeRabbit before merging into develop. Once this merges, I'll tag v0.5.0 on main and publish the GitHub release with notes.

Press R at the console to stand up: the camera pulls back from the
sonar panel into a procedural control room (pressure hull and frames,
pipe runs, lamps, periscope in its well, dead-reckoning plot table,
consoles all round). WASD walks, the mouse looks, E sits you at the
sonar console or takes you to the periscope (raising it if the depth
allows). The sit-down pose puts the 3D panel exactly where the 2D
station fills the screen, so the cut between them can't be seen; the
sonar panel shows the live station and the plot table our own track.
Other stations carry panel art for now.

- control_room.py: layout, walking with collision, reach, camera moves;
no GL. graphics/room3d.py: moderngl offscreen render read back into
  pygame
- the console gets no keys while you're on your feet
- tests/test_room.py drives the patrol scene through it; CI runs the
checks under xvfb-run for software OpenGL
- moderngl dependency; PyInstaller hidden import and licence notice

- crew.py: orders are acknowledged at once ("HELM, AYE: RIGHT 20 RUDDER")
and carried out after the crew's reaction time (Cadet 0.6 s, Commander
  1.2 s, Iron Captain 2 s), always through the Console's own methods
- the helmsman steers to an ordered course and holds it; a hand on the
wheel cancels it ("HELM: COURSE ORDER CANCELLED")
- with the captain away from sonar, the sonarman trains the dial onto
the loudest contact, reports it with its classification, and fire
control marks it into the TDC every 20 s
- orders_menu.py: hold the right mouse button for the order wheel (helm,
course, engines, depth, weapons, masts, emergency: crash dive, blow,
evade), seated or on your feet; the helm ring runs the way you drag
- on your feet, station keys (engines, depth, rudder, fire, ping,
noisemaker, blow, masts) become orders to the crew
- tests/test_crew.py

- stations.py: each crewed station is the part of the console its
crewman works, laid out bigger for that job: sonar, fire control
(PPI, TDC, TMA, tubes), radio (teleprinter), helm and planes, ballast,
damage control. Pieces are cut from the full console frame, so every
panel keeps its drawing and click handling; clicks, drags and the
wheel map back through the piece under them
- a patrol starts on your feet at the conn. E at any crewed console
takes it with the same invisible cut; R stands you up. A station's
own keys work there; any other station key is an order to the crew
- every crewed station's screen is live in the room; the full console
is drawn at most once a frame, for one CRT page, and the stations on
that page are cut from it
- crew reports show as subtitles, and the pause or a question shows
over a station or the room; training and the game-over reckoning keep
  the full console
- one phosphor per CRT page, so pages drawn in turn never ghost
- fix: a patrol no longer starts with a 0.9 s camera move that swallowed
E and snapped you back to the conn

- caged orange alarm lamps over every station and on the periscope
barrel flash for a torpedo, enemy sonar, a leak or hull stress, and
throw orange light into the room; a small tile panel at the conn names
the cause. (An overhead board with repeaters was tried and dropped as
  unrealistic.)
- the klaxon sounds once when a torpedo is first heard
- the plot table is tracing paper over a printed sea chart (graticule,
soundings, compass rose) worked in pencil: our track from our own
navigation with times, each mark ruled from where it was taken, convoy
and sonar reports, and the TDC's target in red pencil with course and
speed; a parallel ruler, dividers, pencils and a rubber lie on it
- alarm_states() is shared by the console's annunciators and the room
- tests/test_board.py

Milestone 4, crew figures:
- procedural crewmen seated at each crewed station, hands on the desk;
the helmsman and planesman sit in the helm seats
- a station's crewman stands aside while the camera carries you to or
from his seat, so the glide never passes through him

Milestone 5, quick travel:
- a STATIONS ring on the order wheel: a dip to black, then you're
carried into that station or to the eyepiece, from your feet or from
another station (no long glide through the periscope or table)

Milestone 6, training in the room:
- training starts at the conn like a patrol; an instructor's card shows
the order, his last words and the station to take, worked out from
the step's highlighted parts; rings land on the right pieces of a
station's view; acknowledge and skip work on your feet
- drill texts explain the room; goals and checks are unchanged, so the
scripted trainee still passes every drill

The plan doc marks all six milestones built, with departures noted.

Deaf players lost crew calls and sounds: the subtitle showed only the newest
log line (lines arriving together were dropped), teleprinter calls were only
readable at RADIO, and enemy pings, distant charges, creaks had no text.

- Console.heard: one feed of what's said (with the caller), printed and sounded
- captions stack in the room, stations and at the periscope; caller in amber,
sounds in brackets; SOUND CAPTIONS setting (on by default)
- a hit or near charge shakes the room and flares the lights

The consoles were plain boxes round their live screens. Each station is now a
model generated by graphics/models.py and saved under assets/ (glTF, textures
embedded), read back by a small graphics/gltf.py with no new dependency:
hammertone housings and bakelite bezels, traffolyte name plates, an engraved
switch rail (tumblers, knobs, lit buttons, guarded firing keys, blow levers),
lino desks, cabinets with louvres and rivets, sound-powered phones, cable
looms into a deckhead tray, and the watch's clutter. The live panel is still
the 2D station, so the seated cut stays invisible. A model shader adds
textures, glow and fixed wear. assets/README.md says how to drop in a model.

The box-and-rod figures are replaced by generated .glb crewmen (graphics/
models.py): smooth bodies, sculpted heads with eyes, a soft painted hairline
and hair shell, beards, hands on the desk or round the yoke's grips; white
roll-neck sweaters, navy jumpers, working dress, a boiler suit; headsets on
the sonarman and radioman. Consoles get knee holes, footrests and stools.

In the room each man breathes, shifts and glances about his work, and when a
caption names him (CONN, SONAR / HELM, AYE / CHIEF, AYE) he looks round at
you as he says it, so a caption has a face. Tests: the head turns to the eye
while speaking and not otherwise; captions map to the right crewman.

The station views were cut-outs of the one-screen console, scaled up: soft,
half empty, with other stations' controls, the sonar plate under every CRT,
a sonar picture on the damage board, keyboard hints on the panels and the
same nine lamps everywhere.

Each station is now laid out for its own man and only his controls take a
click. Gauges, switches, push-buttons and lamps are drawn natively at the
station's size by graphics/instruments.py: switches, buttons, lamps and bezels
are 3D models rendered into cached sprites with soft shadows; black faces with
cream figures, white enamel for the hull gauge; needles cast shadows; glass
catches the light. A piece still maps clicks back to the full console, so one
click path stays. Green screens unchanged; the monitor plate names its page;
the damage page shows the boat's state instead of sonar. Hover a control to
see its keys. Each station shows only its own warning lamps.

The .glb files are generated by graphics/models.py, so they no longer go in
git: the room builds any that are missing when it first opens (about two
seconds, once), and build.py builds them before packaging. Only missing files
are built, so a model dropped in by hand is kept; running models.py rebuilds
them all.

Each step of a camera glide ran as a one-frame frames() call, and the last
frame of a call always drew, so every glide frame was rendered in software
GL (601 room frames at ~160 ms). Only the frames just before the cut are
compared; the rest now just update. Same checks, 188 room frames.

…teleprinter

The last scaled-up cuts of the old console are drawn natively:
- TDC: a drum counter and a 3D setting crank per value; drag a crank to wind
it a notch per few pixels, or scroll on a row to wind that row; the row in
hand marked by a lamp; gyro angle, run and solution lamp below
- PPI: the green phosphor kept, round, behind glass in a chrome bezel
- teleprinter: enamel housing, big type printing above a rubber platen with
the type head riding the line, the paper feeding up, WAVE and GRT drums

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_0128GVA6bk4EdYWNsPSedKEA
…out of view

- a caption fades over its last second instead of vanishing
- CAPTION SIZE in settings: SMALL, LARGE, HUGE (a hand-edited odd size in the
settings file falls back to the default)
- when the crewman making a call is off screen, an arrow on his caption points
the way to turn (left, right or behind), in the room and at a station

…e snorkel recharges it

Own boat carries three H.P. air groups (4,000 psi each). An emergency blow
draws from them, harder the deeper she is (a full blow from 150 m takes about
two groups); empty bottles stop the blow where she is, with the chief's
report. Every torpedo fired takes 300 psi of impulse air from the fullest
group; with none left there's no firing. The compressors recharge the emptiest
group only while snorkelling. Ballast shows the groups on three white
pressure gauges. Golden run unchanged (its patrol never runs the air low).

…d step aside

- arms are posed parts of each crewman's model (rest, half, full reach for a
watchkeeper; thirteen wheel turns for the helmsman and planesman), so hands
stay on the controls without live IK
- carrying out an order (or passing a mark) sends a man's right hand out to
  his switch rail and back
- the helm's two wheels turn on their hubs: the helmsman's with the rudder, the
planesman's as she dives or rises; their hands go round with them
- a man you relieve gets up and steps aside (and back) instead of vanishing
- the glb reader takes arms_N / wheel_N parts; assets/README.md says how a
  dropped-in model can carry them
- generated models carry a version, so old copies left from an earlier build
are rebuilt; a model made by anything else is still kept

The chart under the tracing paper was made up (47°N labels, sine-wave
soundings). It is now a 1960s Admiralty chart of the patrol area: the
patrol's origin at 63°30'N 10°00'W on the Iceland-Faroe Ridge, a parallel
every minute and a meridian every two minutes, labelled; soundings in fathoms,
about 240 on the ridge's crest and deepening toward the Norwegian Sea and the
Iceland Basin; the compass rose carrying the 1965 variation (18°W, decreasing
10' a year); a scale in cables and nautical miles.

… after it

- the coxswain, a chief petty officer in a peaked cap, stands at the conn in
training: he turns to the station he's sending you to and points, and looks
round at you when he speaks (his lines captioned COXSWAIN:)
- FIRST WATCH runs the whole syllabus round the room: wherever the next drill
belongs to another station he sends you to take it, and the drill waits until
you have (a look-and-ENTER step needs no walk)
- each station drill now stops at its own end, and they open for practice once
the first watch is done (remembered in settings)
- the mast levers' highlight is the two levers, not a box over the helm's dial
and the weapons panel, so the snorkel drills go to ballast; highlights may be
  a list of shapes

…h your saves

- a crewman's arm poses are one mesh posed differently, so the renderer blends
the two nearest into a dynamic buffer: a reach flows out and back, and the
helm wheels (and the hands on them) turn continuously; a dropped-in model
whose poses can't blend is refused by name
- the coxswain's at-ease pose now has hands like his pointing one
- checks.py runs every suite with a throwaway home folder, so settings,
careers and replays saved by tests never reach the player's own

…oes gap

The ridge model is replaced by a half-degree grid (61-66N, 4-16W) entered by
hand from Admiralty chart and GEBCO figures: the Iceland and Faroe shelves,
the ridge's crest at 400-470 m, the Faroe Bank and its channel (~800 m), the
Iceland Basin and the Norway Basin falling to 3,000 m. Soundings interpolate
it, in fathoms; land prints no sounding.

…tions, relieving a station

A new chapter, first in the First Watch and a practice drill of its own:
- order a course and a depth on the order wheel and watch the crew carry them
out; put rudder on yourself and the helmsman drops his course
- walk to the plot table (standing at it counts as being there), read fire
control's red target and order a course to head it off
- a far escort searches with its sonar: the orange lamp flashes, sonar reports
it by name, and you go to him
- relieve fire control, wind TGT SPD on a crank, stand up and hand it back
The station drill keeps its own short opening; the chapter menu fits six.

…ld console's controls

Pass-2 audit, measured: a station view cost 12-17 ms, 9.4 ms of it redrawing
the old one-screen console underneath. Profiling showed CRTRenderer.__init__
(its ~5 ms vignette) running every frame: dict.setdefault built a new renderer
as its default argument even when the page had one. It's now built once per
page (with a test that counts). The job stations also take a lean frame: the
screens and their bezels, and the needles' movement their gauges read, without
drawing the old controls and teleprinter. Station views now cost 7-8 ms.
Also shortens THE ROOM's blurb to fit the chapter menu.

The previous commit gave Workstation.draw a lean keyword; test_ui's recording
subclass only forwarded positional arguments, so the room's lean console frame
broke it. Forward keywords too.

…w in their own GL context

- plot_art: the compass-rose legend loop rebound `k` (px per metre), so the track, bearings, reports and TDC
target were drawn at 1 px/m, mostly off the chart. The test now looks for the red target where scale puts it.
- The coxswain's goal is the station's centre; "HELM AND PLANES" isn't a crewman, so the station drill's
helm steps raised KeyError every frame on foot.
- instruments.render makes its context current: once the room's context existed, newly drawn sprites
(crank turns, lamp states) rendered dark and flat.

…, the plot and H.P. air

docs/room.py films the real Patrol scene headless on its own frame clock: a hero walk to sonar, the coxswain
pointing to the helm, a captioned sonar report, a blow draining the air groups, a still of the room, one per
station, and the attack plot. Stills are full size on one palette (0.3-0.6 MB each). The attack GIF moves
down to How an attack works; the old screens it doesn't cover keep their images. The badge now says assets
in git: 0, since the models are built at start.

… mouse release, reset keeps training

- audio: with no audio device every one-shot raised AttributeError (the sounds are never made); _play now
takes the sound's name and looks it up only with audio on.
- At the eyepiece, a sim step that lowers the scope left at=PERISCOPE with no station to seat you at:
draw raised StopIteration. The frame draws, and the next one steps you back into the room.
- Two FASTER (DEEPER, RUDDER) presses before the first is carried out now step twice; the captain's hand on
the wheel also cancels a helm order still waiting.
- The mouse is released when a patrol ends with you on your feet; RESET DEFAULTS keeps First Watch progress.
- README: three dependencies, six training chapters.

…ders, alarms, training

Walk the control room: crewed job stations, orders, alarms, training
…; version 0.5.0

The crew's sonarman slewed the dial to bearings[argmax(heard)]. heard is cone-weighted, so with no contact
in the cone it was all zeros and argmax picked whichever ship was listed first: a faint one at 9 km won over
a loud one at 1.5 km. He now takes the loudest level, which is what the waterfall shows him. (The CodeRabbit
thread on PR #5 asked to skip the slew instead; that would leave the dial parked and never searching.)

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 24080

Patrols now depend on OpenGL 3.3 and have no fallback. On machines without a usable OpenGL context, a patrol stops as soon as the control room opens. The on-foot attack plot also rebuilds an expensive texture twice per second, which can cause stutter. Handle context failure before release.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 24080

Most changed controls remain within the local game session. However, an installed third-party model can reference image files outside its directory, giving imported data broader filesystem access than its placement suggests. This requires adopting a replacement model; no remote attack endpoint or privilege escalation was established. Security coverage remains incomplete.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The new replacement-model loader passes model-controlled image URIs to pygame.image.load without restricting them to the model or asset directory. Absolute paths and parent traversal can therefore select user-readable images outside that directory. This is reachable through the documented third-party model replacement mechanism, not just arbitrary Python calls. Generated assets embed their textures, and no outbound disclosure or privilege escalation was established; exposure requires installing a replacement model.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The established imported-model exposure is the adopting player's process and its user-readable image files. A model author controls texture references after the user installs a replacement. No remote game endpoint, elevated privilege, cross-tenant access, or outbound disclosure was established. Windows network-share behavior remains unverified.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The newly introduced path is third-party GLB adoption, preservation by build_all, automatic renderer loading, and model-selected image decoding. Rejecting external binary buffers does not protect the separate image-URI path. Image lookup or decode errors can propagate out of renderer construction.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Normal generated models embed textures and runtime model filenames come from application-defined mappings. These constrain ordinary assets but do not validate replacement-model provenance or confine image references. Crew-command authority remains local and passes through Console action checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Crew state is created with each Console, and retry creates a fresh session. Replay viewing uses a separate ReplayView rather than restoring pending crew commands. This bounds delayed-command state to a local session rather than a persistent authority transition.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For replacement models, require embedded textures or resolve external images beneath an explicitly allowed asset root, rejecting absolute and network-share paths. Consider bounded texture and mesh sizes, cycle detection, and per-model failure recovery so imported data cannot unnecessarily terminate the game.

I’m a rabbit in the con, ears perked to the crew,
I hop past each station to see what they do.
A klaxon rings out, and the captions appear,
While fresh air refills each bottle down here.
First Watch is complete; I nibble a sprig,
Then bounce through the room with a proud little jig!

Cache the tracing-paper surface by size.

OnFoot.draw refreshes plot_art every 0.5 seconds of simulation time. Each refresh calls art.texture for the 1040×720 paper. The paper depends only on size and its fixed texture parameters. Cache it to avoid repeating this expensive operation.

🌐 Web query:

moderngl create_standalone_context require=330 macOS core profile default version

💡 Result:

`require=330` means **OpenGL 3.3 is the minimum**, not that ModernGL will create exactly version 3.3. Check `ctx.version_code` for the actual version returned. ([moderngl.readthedocs.io](https://moderngl.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/context.html?utm_source=openai))

```python
ctx = moderngl.create_standalone_context(require=330)
print(ctx.version_code)
```

On macOS, Apple’s native OpenGL profiles are core profiles; Apple documents 3.2 core and 4.1 core profile options. So 3.3 is within that range, but the exact version you get depends on the backend and machine. ([developer.apple.com](https://developer.apple.com/documentation/appkit/opengl-profiles?utm_source=openai))

If you mean “what is the default when I omit `require`?”: ModernGL’s documented minimum is **330 (OpenGL 3.3)**. That’s a minimum request, not a fixed default context version. ([moderngl.readthedocs.io](https://moderngl.readthedocs.io/en/latest/topics/context.html?utm_source=openai))

Handle OpenGL context failure at the patrol boundary.

OnFoot.draw can create a context through graphics.instruments._gl() while composing station screens. It then creates another context through App.room(). If either operation fails, the process-level handler only logs the traceback and re-raises, so the patrol terminates.

Catch the context-creation failure around the on-foot rendering path. Leave on-foot mode and use the full console only if that path does not use OpenGL. Do not use require=330 as the failure fix; ModernGL already documents OpenGL 3.3 as the minimum when the argument is omitted.

Isolate direct tutorial-test settings writes.

tests/test_tutorial.py completes FIRST WATCH and can call settings.save() through Tutorial.advance(). Direct execution can therefore write trained=True to the user's settings file. checks.py already uses a temporary HOME, so uv run checks.py is isolated. Patch settings.save in tests/test_tutorial.py, or set HOME and USERPROFILE to a temporary directory before importing settings.
