Phase 1 of dead reckoning (DR). You decide when to raise a mast for a fix; the navigator does the maths. DR error affects the approach, never the shot.

What changes in play

  • Current: each patrol rolls an unseen set and drift. The new difficulty knob drift is 0 kt on CADET (and in the tutorial and SHAKEDOWN), 0.5 kt on COMMANDER and 0.8 kt on IRON CAPTAIN.
  • Plot table: the track is drawn from the navigator's DR position, not the true one. A pencilled circle of doubt grows between fixes.
  • Fixes: scope, snorkel or hull above water (player.exposed) gives a fix. The navigator then says how far out DR was ("FIX TAKEN. DR WAS 0.6 MILES OUT"). Once the doubt passes a mile, he recommends a fix once.
  • Convoy reports: the teleprinter now gives a chart position in lat/long. The navigator adds "CONVOY BEARS 123, 8 KM BY DR", and the plot marks a cross at the chart position. With a stale fix, that bearing is wrong by your DR error.
  • Sonar reports on the plot are ruled from the DR position.

Why TMA and the TDC are untouched

TMALog.predicted combines the present own position with past track points. Feeding it DR history against the true present position would skew predicted bearings by roughly error ÷ range (about 6° for 500 m at 5 km). So the track now stores both (t, x, y, dr x, dr y): TMA uses the true columns and the plot uses the DR ones.

Other

  • latlon, dms, DATUM and MILE move from graphics/room3d.py to geometry.py, so the console can use them without importing moderngl. room3d re-imports them.
  • Golden replay regenerated: I confirmed it passes on the base first. The diff comes from the extra current roll shifting the dice sequence, plus the new report text.
  • Test: tests/test_crew.py gains a navigator test covering DR drift, the circle holding the true position, the fix prompt, a fix resetting DR, and cadets having no current.

Checks

xvfb-run -a uv run checks.py: every suite and lint pass.

… mast gives a fix

- Each patrol rolls a set and drift (tuning "drift": CADET 0, COMMANDER 0.5 kt, IRON CAPTAIN 0.8 kt).
- The navigator keeps DR: the plot table's track and reports are worked from it, with a pencilled circle
of doubt that grows between fixes. Scope, snorkel or hull above water gives a fix and he says how far
out DR was; past a mile of doubt he recommends one.
- Convoy reports come as a chart position (lat/long); the navigator gives bearing and range from DR.
- TMA and the TDC keep the true own track, so DR error never spoils a shot.
- latlon/dms/DATUM/MILE move to geometry so the console can use them without moderngl.
- Golden replay regenerated: the extra roll shifts the dice, and the report text changed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added dead-reckoning navigation that accounts for ocean currents, tracks uncertainty and recommends position fixes.
    • Chart displays now show a circle indicating uncertainty in the estimated position.
    • Convoy dispatches provide map coordinates, while navigator reports give bearing and distance from the estimated position.
    • Higher difficulty settings now introduce more current-related drift; the easiest setting has none.

The change adds current-based dead-reckoning estimates and uncertainty, records estimated positions in TMA tracks, and uses geographic coordinates for convoy reports. The chart can display the estimated uncertainty around the current position.

Changes: Navigation and charting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and track dead reckoning
src/tuning.py, src/sim.py, src/console.py, src/tma.py, tests/test_crew.py, tests/test_geometry.py, tests/test_sim.py
Difficulty presets set drift values, and Ocean stores current. Console estimates dead-reckoning position and uncertainty, passes the estimate to TMA updates, and reports fixes. Navigator and TMA tests cover the updated behaviour.
Report and display geographic position
src/geometry.py, src/console.py, src/crew.py, src/graphics/room3d.py, src/main.py, tests/golden/linux.json, tests/test_crew.py
Geographic conversion supports convoy coordinates and chart rendering. Dispatches and sonar notes use estimated positions. The chart displays a circle when uncertainty exceeds the pixel threshold. The golden output and navigator tests reflect the changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dc485

A sonar mark can remain at an outdated chart position after a navigation fix. Correct the update order before merging, or accept this localized chart error.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to dc485

The reviewed changes remain within the game's navigation, reporting, and display flows. Estimated positions are kept separate from true-position fire-control calculations, and no new external access or privileged capability was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported propagation is within the existing game session: navigation estimates affect reports, track history, and chart presentation. The inspected callers and consumers do not establish an expansion into tenant data, external services, credentials, or host privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The relevant boundary is between authoritative simulation coordinates and navigation estimates, not a new authentication or authorization boundary. True coordinates remain available to TMA prediction, and the chart selects estimated coordinates explicitly.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Within navigate, exposure resets error, fix time, and warning state together. Repeated exposed updates refresh the fix without repeating the accumulated-error notification, and the submerged recommendation is emitted once until the next fix.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Take the navigation fix before writing plot notes.

When world.step(dt) exposes the submarine, Crew.update can write a sonar note using the old nav_err. navigate(dt) then resets that error. The note remains at the wrong chart position, potentially by more than a mile. Call navigate(dt) immediately after world.step(dt), before event reports and Crew.update.
