Why

The alerts overview was a rules table where every row said OK, the incident page was a redirect into an investigation, and the rule editor split a narrow form and a narrow chart. Error rate thresholds also changed units between modes: a 5 typed as a percent in Built-in became a 0-1 ratio after switching to Query, so the rule saved and could never fire.

What changes

/alerts: Inbox, Rules, Routing

  • Inbox: "N firing · M waiting on data", open and held incidents, a 24h fire strip per rule, and blind spots (erroring, stale, skipped for no data, unrouted, failing delivery). The quiet state leads with blind spots.
  • Rules: search and status filters, grouped by tag, headroom meter against the threshold, 7-day state ribbon, routes, fired count over 30d.
  • Routing: destinations with a health strip of the last 20 deliveries. The delivery log stays below.
  • Legacy tab=overview|settings|rules links and status=attention still resolve.

Incident page

  • One timeline: opened, each delivery attempt with failures and retries, reminders, holds, investigation result, resolve.
  • Rail with sibling groups, evidence links (error issue, traces and logs for the window), the rule sentence and its 30d fire count.
  • No longer auto-creates an investigation on load; "Investigate" is a button.

Rule editor

  • Preview chart full width, condition bar under it (comparator, threshold, window, checks to fire, min samples, severity), then a Built-in / Query builder / SQL switch.
  • Built-in is a form over the same query draft, so switching modes keeps filters. Query builder is the dashboard query panel; SQL is the dashboard SQL panel plus the alert reducer.
  • One display unit per signal in every mode.
  • Warns when min samples or missing data would skip windows.
  • Edit mode shows changed values with the old one and replays the saved rule against the draft.

Lab

  • /lab/alerts renders Inbox, Rules, Routing and the incident page from fixtures (no API, dev only).

Not in this PR (needs backend)

Incident ack, assign, snooze, notes and manual resolve; rule owner; warn and page thresholds on one rule; routing policies and silences; rule versions. None of these are faked in the UI.

Verification

  • bun run typecheck in apps/web: clean.
  • oxlint on the 42 changed TS files: no errors (existing warnings only).
  • vitest src/lib/alerts, alerts-overview-model.test.ts, lab/registry.test.ts: 14 files, 127 tests pass.
  • Checked in a local full stack: Built-in to Query builder keeps filters and the 5.0% threshold; edit mode shows the struck old values and recomputes skipped windows; saving a new rule lands on the Inbox with its blind spot. Local data is sparse, so before/after counts read 0 there.
  • Known leftovers: the template picker still opens on a new rule; a few pre-existing em dashes remain in nearby copy.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Redesigned the Alerts page with Inbox, Rules, and Routing tabs, including incident activity, rule health, blind spots, and destination delivery status.
    • Added detailed incident pages with timelines, delivery history, related rule information, and an option to start an investigation.
    • Reworked alert creation into guided steps, with query-builder support and clearer condition controls.
    • Added saved-versus-draft comparisons when editing alerts, including preview changes and incidents the draft would clear.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved threshold display and conversion for query-based error-rate and latency alerts.
    • Updated destination links to open the Routing tab.

…ilt rule editor

/alerts becomes Inbox / Rules / Routing. Inbox leads with open and held
incidents, a 24h fire strip per rule and blind spots (erroring, stale,
skipped for no data, unrouted). Rules groups by tag with a headroom meter,
a 7-day state ribbon, routes and fired count. Routing holds destinations
with delivery health. Legacy tab links redirect.

The incident page is now a real detail page built on one timeline:
opened, every delivery attempt, reminders, holds, investigation result,
resolve. It no longer auto-starts an investigation and redirects.

The rule editor puts the preview chart full width with a condition bar
under it, then a Built-in / Query builder / SQL switch. Built-in is a form
over the same query draft, so switching modes keeps filters. Error rate
thresholds use one display unit in every mode (a percent typed in Built-in
no longer becomes a 0-1 ratio after switching). A warning shows when min
samples or missing data would skip windows. Edit mode shows changed values
with the old one and replays the saved rule against the draft.

Adds /lab/alerts, rendering all of it from fixtures.

📝 Walkthrough

The Alerts page now has Inbox, Rules, and Routing tabs, and the incident route renders incident details. The rule editor uses numbered steps and supports rule-mode switching and edit comparisons. A fixture-backed alerts lab route is also added.

Changes: Alerts rule creation and editing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rule modes and threshold conversions
apps/web/src/components/alerts/alert-create-page-content.tsx, apps/web/src/lib/alerts/rule-modes.ts, apps/web/src/lib/alerts/form-utils.ts, apps/web/src/lib/alerts/widget-prefill.ts, apps/web/src/lib/alerts/*test.ts
New alert forms start in builder-query mode. Mode switching maps supported built-in signals and filters to query-builder drafts. Threshold conversion handles builder-query error rates as percentages.
Editor steps and preview comparison
apps/web/src/components/alerts/alert-create-form-surface.tsx, apps/web/src/components/alerts/rule-query-section.tsx, apps/web/src/components/alerts/rule-condition-bar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/alerts/rule-noise-section.tsx, apps/web/src/components/alerts/rule-live-chart-hero.tsx, apps/web/src/components/alerts/rule-edit-impact.tsx, apps/web/src/components/alerts/alert-rule-chart.tsx
The form groups query, condition, notification, and naming controls into numbered steps. Edit mode compares saved and draft previews and identifies open incidents cleared by the draft. The chart marks held incident intervals and reports skipped preview windows.

The condition bar was a wrapping sentence of unlabeled inputs, the old
value sat inside the edited field, and required inputs were buried under
optional ones. The editor is now four numbered steps: what to watch, when
to alert, who gets notified, name it. Each step says when it is required
and shows a check once filled.

When to alert puts labeled fields (condition, threshold, severity, window,
checks in a row, min samples) beside the preview chart, each with its unit
and a one-line hint. While editing, a changed field shows "Was 5%" under
it. After-it-fires settings use the same labeled fields. The action bar
states the whole rule in one sentence and updates as you type.
…in signals

New rules and templates (except Apdex, which has no builder aggregation)
open in the query builder with the default signal carried over as a query.
Built-in signal cards get an icon each. Step headings drop the check
circles for a plain number, and the rule summary names the aggregation
instead of saying "query builder".
Step titles are now display headings with the hint on its own line and a
divider between steps, so they no longer read at the same weight as field
labels. When to alert puts the chart full width and the fields under it in
three-column rows (condition, threshold, severity; how it is checked; after
it fires), which removes the tall left column and the empty space beside
the chart. The chart badge and suggested name use the aggregation instead
of "Query builder", and the name placeholder loses its em dash.
Both actions sit in the page header on Inbox, Rules and Routing as a
matched pair (same icon, parallel labels). New destination shows for
admins only, since creating one is admin-only server side.
When nothing is open, the Inbox lists each rule with a quiet-for streak,
its closest call and a headroom meter, and folds empty sections into one
line instead of showing empty boxes.

Maple review

🔴 Confidence 4/10 · risky as written
Mode-switch and threshold-unit logic is read directly and has real defects; the overview/incident count findings rest on partial reads under time pressure.
quality 68/100 · 3 warnings · 1 note · tests covered · risk medium · 9 files not read

Rebuilds the alerts hub (Inbox/Rules/Routing), the incident timeline page and the rule editor, and adds a dev-only lab. The direction is sound, but the mode switch silently drops a rule's split-by and the rules table formats builder thresholds in the wrong unit. The nine removed components (old overview tab, health summary, incident strip, scope and signal sections) were not read: they carry no added code.

  • /alerts gains an Inbox, a Rules table and a Routing tab, replacing the old overview tab
  • Incident page is one timeline and no longer auto-creates an investigation on load
  • Rule editor becomes preview chart, condition bar, then a Built-in / Query builder / SQL switch
  • /lab/alerts renders all three tabs and the incident page from fixtures

Findings

🟠 Warning · F1 · Switching a builder rule to Built-in silently drops its split-by tokens

correctness · apps/web/src/lib/alerts/rule-modes.ts:121

queryDraftToBuiltin forces fields.groupBy to [] whenever serviceNames.length > 0, so a draft grouped per http.route on one service loses its grouping with no entry in dropped and a null notice, and the filtered groupBy built at line 113 only ever exists when more than one service is named, where line 121 discards it too. The user saves a rule that evaluates ungrouped without being told.

			groupBy,
🟠 Warning · F2 · ruleConditionSummary prints builder thresholds in the stored unit, not the display unit

correctness · apps/web/src/lib/alerts/overview-derive.ts:20-21

The summary formats with rule.signalType, which is builder_query for a query-builder rule, so an error_rate aggregation stored as the 0–1 ratio renders Query builder > 0.05 while the rule editor, chart and headroom list show 5% for the same threshold. preview-insights.ts:146 already formats through displaySignalType(form); use it here too.

		? `${formatSignalValue(displaySignalType(rule), rule.threshold)} and ${formatSignalValue(displaySignalType(rule), rule.thresholdUpper)}`
		: formatSignalValue(displaySignalType(rule), rule.threshold)
🟠 Warning · F3 · The quiet-rule footer counts fired and capped lanes as quiet

correctness · apps/web/src/components/alerts/overview/inbox-tab.tsx:252

The footer subtracts only the lanes drawn in the strip from the total rule count, so with 50 rules of which 20 fired it reports + 42 quiet rule beside 20 rules fired, and disabled rules are counted quiet as well. Derive quiet from the rules that had no incident in the window instead of from the capped lanes slice.

Compute quiet from the rules with no incident overlapping the range (and exclude disabled rules) rather than `rules.length - shown`.
🔵 Note · F4 · The rail's "median" duration is the upper-middle value for an even count

correctness · apps/web/src/components/alerts/incident-detail/incident-rail.tsx:187

Math.floor(durations.length / 2) picks the element after the middle, so two resolved incidents of 10m and 20m report median 20m instead of 15m. Average the two middle elements when the count is even.

For even `n`, use `(durations[n / 2 - 1] + durations[n / 2]) / 2`.

What was checked
  • Switching modes carries the threshold through the stored unit (rule-modes.ts:180), verified by reading carryThreshold
  • No new backend query, outbound call or env read in the diff; the change is frontend-only
  • fireLanes/ruleRibbon clamp offsets into 0..1 and guard a zero-length range (overview-derive.ts:116)

Keep builder error_rate thresholds on the ratio scale.

The evaluator compares the trace error_rate ratio directly with the stored threshold. A legacy builder rule saved with threshold 5 is therefore an existing 500% configuration. The new form displays that value as 500%; it does not change evaluator semantics or corrupt the stored value.

… runs

The button only disabled during the initial investigations load, so quick
repeat clicks could create duplicate investigations for one incident. The
action now runs through useAsyncAction and its pending flag disables it.
- Switching a builder rule with a named service to Built-in now names the
split it drops in the switch notice instead of dropping it silently.
- The rule summary formats builder thresholds in the display unit (5%, not
0.05) and names the aggregation instead of "Query builder".
- The 24h strip counts quiet rules as enabled rules that did not fire, and
reports lanes past the cap as "+ N more fired".

Maple review

🟡 Confidence 6/10 · needs attention
The three earlier findings are verifiably fixed and tested; the incident route's missing failure branch is the one unguarded path, and its other hunks are already reviewed.
quality 88/100 · 1 warning · 1 note · tests partial · risk medium

The follow-up commit fixes the mode-switch, rule-summary and quiet-count findings, and keeps the revised incident page. One path in the incident route still reports a failed fetch as a missing incident.

  • Switching a builder rule to Built-in now reports the split-by tokens it drops
  • ruleConditionSummary prints builder thresholds in the display unit
  • The quiet-rule footer counts enabled rules with no lane, capped lanes included
  • The incident route starts an investigation only on click, through useAsyncAction

Findings

🟠 Warning · F5 · A failed incident-list fetch renders "Incident not found"

correctness · apps/web/src/routes/alerts/incidents/$incidentId.tsx:77-91

When useAlertIncidentsList returns a failure (a transient API or auth error), .orElse(() => []) leaves incidents empty and incident null while Result.isInitial is false, so the page claims the incident "may have been pruned, or the link is stale" instead of showing the failure. The delivery query in the same component does branch on Result.isFailure ($incidentId.tsx:253); the incidents and rules results get no such branch, so a fetch error is presented as a missing record with no retry.

Add a `Result.isFailure(incidentsResult)` branch before this one that renders `ErrorState` (or `ResourceNotFound` with a retry) so an API failure is not reported as a deleted incident.

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F1 · Switching a builder rule to Built-in silently drops its split-by tokens
  • ✅ F2 · ruleConditionSummary prints builder thresholds in the stored unit, not the display unit
  • ✅ F3 · The quiet-rule footer counts fired and capped lanes as quiet
What was checked
  • queryDraftToBuiltin now names a lost split in dropped (rule-modes.ts:115) and the test pins it
  • The quiet footer counts every lane's rule, enabled rules only (inbox-tab.tsx:254)
  • ruleConditionSummary formats through displaySignalType and the builder-aggregation test asserts 5.0%

In `apps/web/src/routes/alerts/incidents/$incidentId.tsx:77-91`: A failed incident-list fetch renders "Incident not found".

When `useAlertIncidentsList` returns a failure (a transient API or auth error), `.orElse(() => [])` leaves `incidents` empty and `incident` null while `Result.isInitial` is false, so the page claims the incident "may have been pruned, or the link is stale" instead of showing the failure. Verify the problem exists at that location before changing it, and keep the fix to those lines.
