[None][perf] DSA: skip the indexer schedule rebuild for index-sharing draft steps and the duplicated kv-lens hook - #19786
[None][perf] DSA: skip the indexer schedule rebuild for index-sharing draft steps and the duplicated kv-lens hook
Description
Two dead-work elisions on the DSA decode path. Neither changes a device result: both remove work whose output is never read before it is rebuilt.
1. Indexer schedule rebuilds inside an index-sharing draft loop (sparse/dsa/metadata.py, sparse/dsa/indexer.py). update_for_spec_dec() -> on_update_kv_lens() rebuilt the DeepGEMM MQA-logits schedule (the schedule launches, the 2D/expanded indexer KV-length copies and the GVR row order) before every draft step and once more after the last one. With mtp_index_share every update_for_spec_dec() made inside the draft loop prepares either a TopK-reuse draft step, which never reads the schedule, or the post-loop target forward, which rebuilds it in _preprocess_inputs.
Invariant: those buffers are read only by the indexer's MQA-logits + TopK pass (the decode branch of sparse_attn_indexer). Slot mappings and the gen indptrs are still refreshed on every call.
Where the decision lives: DSAtrtllmAttentionMetadata.update_for_spec_dec() decides the skip itself (in_mtp_draft_loop and sparse_metadata_params.mtp_index_share) and calls on_update_kv_lens(skip_indexer_schedule=True); the public parameterless call stays the full rebuild (the pre-draft refresh and the target forward use it). The schedule block is extracted into _rebuild_indexer_schedule(). eagle3.py is untouched.
Stale assert: on_update_kv_lens() records the skip in indexer_schedule_stale until the next full rebuild (on_update_kv_lens() or Indexer.prepare_scheduler_metadata), and the TopK pass raises if it ever finds the marker set, so a misplaced skip fails loudly instead of running a stale schedule.
DeepseekV4TrtllmAttentionMetadata overrides the hook and forwards the argument, so its own rebuild still runs on every call.
2. Duplicated on_update_kv_lens() at the step boundary (pyexecutor/engine/runners/decoder/runner.py). Under the overlap scheduler with speculative decoding, _preprocess_inputs called the hook before and again after the kv-length correction with nothing reading its results in between. DecoderRunner._preprocess_inputs now skips the first call whenever the correction follows (has_kv_lens_correction, the same predicate the correction block uses). This is safe for every backend: each on_update_kv_lens on main overwrites its outputs from the current lengths (AttentionMetadata no-op; TrtllmAttentionMetadata flag invalidation + Fp4MlaState; DSA; DeepSeek-V4 compressed-KV metadata and indices; QSA token mapping; both MiniMax-M3 classes).
Effect, structurally: 5-12 launches per skipped call; two skipped calls per decode step at MTP-1, six at MTP-5.
Measured: standalone pair on upstream main (ae4aa5d6c9 + this change, same image, with vs without the change via a temporary env switch since removed, GLM-5.2 NVFP4 TP8 batch-1 MTP-5 decode on GB300, 300 s each): device step p50 9.86 vs 9.96 ms (-0.10 ms, about 1 %), output tokens/s/user p50 +0.7 %, identical request counts and no errors.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_dsa_indexer.py::test_indexer_decode_mtp_topk_reuse: the index-shared reuse steps always run with the MQA-logits schedule marked stale and poisoned (-1 fill of the schedule buffers and the 2D KV lengths); the reuse must still copy the stash 1:1, and a step that computes TopK on the stale schedule must raise.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_mtp_schedule_skip.py (new, GPU): on a real DSAtrtllmAttentionMetadata with index share on, update_for_spec_dec() rebuilds the (poisoned) schedule outside the draft loop, leaves it untouched and sets indexer_schedule_stale inside it, and on_update_kv_lens() rebuilds it and clears the marker.
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py (new, CPU): DecoderRunner._preprocess_inputs calls the hook exactly once per step, seeing the corrected lengths when the correction applies and the original ones otherwise.
The existing DSA MTP integration tests exercise the real path end to end; the stale assert makes any schedule read on a skipped step fail loudly there.
Follow-ups (not in this PR)
The whole post-last-step metadata update in the draft loop (slot mappings, gen indptrs, pool-view invalidation) is dead as well: the next target forward rebuilds all of it in _preprocess_inputs. It could be skipped after an audit of every reader between the last draft forward and that rebuild.
PR Checklist
PR description clearly explains what and why.
Follows the TRT-LLM coding guidelines to the best of my knowledge.
Test cases are provided for the new code path.
No API changes; no new dependencies; no documentation change needed.
Please check this after reviewing the above items as appropriate for this PR.
Dev Engineer Review
DSA metadata can skip indexer-schedule rebuilding during MTP index-sharing draft steps. It still updates other KV-length metadata, marks the schedule stale, and clears that state after a full rebuild.
sparse_attn_indexer raises RuntimeError if TopK uses a stale schedule. Metadata without the stale-state field is treated as not stale.
DeepSeek-V4 forwards the optional skip_indexer_schedule argument to the superclass. Calls that omit it retain the default behavior.
Decoder preprocessing skips the initial KV-length hook when speculative overlap will correct the lengths and invoke the hook later. Verify the corrected lengths reach all relevant backends.
Test-run status is not established as passing. The supplied context reports CI failures but does not identify the failing tests.
QA Engineer Review
Three unit-test files changed. The supplied change summary does not indicate test-list changes. The tests cover schedule reuse and rebuild, stale-schedule rejection, KV-length metadata refresh, and decoder hook ordering and observed lengths. The integration-list search found no matching entries; these unit tests do not require CI or manual-QA integration-list membership. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up, because test-run status is not verified.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/deepseek_v4/metadata.py — on_update_kv_lens accepts and forwards skip_indexer_schedule. Verify compatibility with superclass callers and the default path.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/dsa/indexer.py — A scheduler rebuild clears the stale marker; TopK raises RuntimeError if the schedule is stale. Verify both paths, including metadata without the marker.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/dsa/metadata.py — KV-length updates can skip schedule and row-reorder rebuilding while updating other metadata. Verify draft-step conditions and recovery through a full rebuild.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/decoder/inputs.py — Preprocessing skips the initial KV-length hook when a later speculative-overlap correction will run. Verify that the later hook receives corrected lengths and that other paths retain expected behavior.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_dsa_indexer.py — test_indexer_decode_mtp_topk_reuse covers poisoned schedule reuse and stale-schedule rejection. This unit test does not require integration-list membership.
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_mtp_schedule_skip.py — Adds coverage for skipped schedule rebuilding, KV-length buffer updates, and full-rebuild recovery. This unit test does not require integration-list membership.
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py — Adds CPU coverage for hook count and observed KV lengths under speculative-decoding and overlap conditions. This unit test does not require integration-list membership.

… draft steps and the duplicated kv-lens hook
Two dead-work elisions on the DSA decode path with bit-identical device
results.
1. Indexer schedule rebuilds inside an index-sharing draft loop.
update_for_spec_dec() -> on_update_kv_lens() rebuilt the DeepGEMM MQA-logits
schedule (the schedule launches, the 2D/expanded indexer KV-length copies
and the GVR row order) before every draft step and once more after the last
one. With mtp_index_share every update_for_spec_dec() made inside the draft
loop prepares either a TopK-reuse draft step, which never reads the
schedule, or the post-loop target forward, which rebuilds it in
_preprocess_inputs.
- Invariant: those buffers are read only by the indexer's MQA-logits + TopK
pass (the decode branch of sparse_attn_indexer). Slot mappings and the gen
indptrs are still refreshed on every call.
- Decision: DSAtrtllmAttentionMetadata.update_for_spec_dec() decides the
skip itself (in_mtp_draft_loop and
sparse_metadata_params.mtp_index_share) and calls
on_update_kv_lens(skip_indexer_schedule=True); the public parameterless
call stays the full rebuild. The schedule block is extracted into
_rebuild_indexer_schedule(). eagle3.py is untouched.
- Stale assert: on_update_kv_lens() records the skip in
indexer_schedule_stale until the next full rebuild (on_update_kv_lens() or
Indexer.prepare_scheduler_metadata) and the TopK pass raises if it finds
the marker set, so a misplaced skip fails loudly.
- DeepseekV4TrtllmAttentionMetadata overrides the hook and forwards the
argument, so its own rebuild still runs on every call.
2. Duplicated on_update_kv_lens() at the step boundary. Under the overlap
scheduler with speculative decoding _preprocess_inputs called the hook
before and again after the kv-length correction with nothing reading its
results in between. Idempotence travels with the method: interface.py adds
the idempotent_kv_lens_hook decorator (contract: a pure rebuild from the
current lengths, calling it twice equals calling it once) and
kv_lens_hook_is_idempotent(metadata), which reads the marker off the class's
hook so any override without it is not idempotent. DSA decorates its hook;
the engine drops the first call when a correction
follows and the hook is idempotent, and the correction block uses the same
has_kv_lens_correction predicate.
Effect, structurally: 5-12 launches per skipped call; two skipped calls per
decode step at MTP-1, six at MTP-5.
Tests:
- sparse/dsa/test_dsa_indexer.py::test_indexer_decode_mtp_topk_reuse: the
reuse steps always run with the schedule marked stale and poisoned; reuse
must copy the stash 1:1 and a TopK pass on it must raise.
- sparse/dsa/test_mtp_schedule_skip.py (new, GPU): a real
DSAtrtllmAttentionMetadata over a real DSACacheManager. update_for_spec_dec()
inside an index-sharing draft loop leaves the poisoned schedule buffers
untouched and sets the marker, on_update_kv_lens() rebuilds and clears it,
and outside the draft loop or without index share
update_for_spec_dec() rebuilds.
- executor/test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py (new, CPU):
DecoderRunner._preprocess_inputs on a bare runner calls a decorated hook once
and an undecorated or subclass-overridden hook twice when a correction
applies, and once when spec decode or the overlap scheduler is off.

…ns correction unconditionally
Replace the idempotent_kv_lens_hook marker and kv_lens_hook_is_idempotent()
with a plain rule: when DecoderRunner._preprocess_inputs is about to correct
kv_lens_cuda and call on_update_kv_lens() again, it skips the call before the
correction for every backend.
Every implementation on main overwrites its outputs from the current
lengths and nothing reads them between the two calls: AttentionMetadata
(no-op), TrtllmAttentionMetadata (flag invalidation + Fp4MlaState),
DSA, DeepSeek-V4 (compressed-KV metadata and indices), QSA (token mapping),
and both MiniMax-M3 metadata classes.
The CPU test now checks one call after the correction, and the original
single call when no correction applies.
Signed-off-by: Iman Tabrizian <10105175+tabrizian@users.noreply.github.com>
…ential checks
test_mtp_schedule_skip.py: one test on one index-sharing metadata. Outside
the draft loop update_for_spec_dec() rebuilds the schedule; inside it the
schedule is left as is and marked stale; on_update_kv_lens() rebuilds it and
clears the marker.
test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py: one parametrized test. The hook runs
exactly once per step, after the correction when one applies.

The changes let DSA metadata skip indexer schedule rebuilding during MTP index-sharing draft steps and mark the schedule stale. The indexer rejects Top-K computation while stale. Decoder preprocessing updates KV-length metadata after speculative overlap correction.

Summary
Track and rebuild DSA schedules tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/dsa/metadata.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/deepseek_v4/metadata.py, tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_mtp_schedule_skip.py
DSA metadata records when schedule rebuilding is skipped, conditionally rebuilds schedules and KV-length row ordering, and clears the stale marker after rebuilding. DeepSeek V4 forwards the optional skip argument. The test checks schedule and KV-dependent buffers during and after an index-sharing draft step.
Guard Top-K against stale schedules tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/dsa/indexer.py, tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_dsa_indexer.py
The indexer clears the stale marker when rebuilding scheduler metadata and raises RuntimeError if generation Top-K runs while the marker is set. The test poisons schedule buffers during reuse and checks the stale-schedule error.
Apply KV-length correction before metadata refresh tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/decoder/inputs.py, tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py
Decoder preprocessing skips its initial metadata update when speculative overlap correction applies. The test checks which KV lengths the metadata hook receives across speculative-decoding and overlap conditions.

The title names the two elisions in the PR: skipping the DSA indexer schedule rebuild for index-sharing draft steps, and the duplicated kv-lens hook. The raw summary confirms both changes are present in the changeset (DSA metadata/indexer, and the decoder input preparer). The title follows the repository's [None][perf] format and is specific, though it is long at 113 characters.

Explanation
The description follows the repository's structure: it has a Description section explaining the issue and fix, a Test Coverage section listing specific test files and cases, and a completed PR Checklist. It goes beyond the template with invariants, a measured performance result, and follow-up notes. The template's 'Description' section is detailed and the description is mostly complete. The title is also repeated at the top of the body, which is harmless. The description does not state a linked ticket or NVBugs ID, but the title's [None] tag covers that. Per the template, a ticket reference is optional for [None].

Shut down the DSACacheManager at test teardown.
_make_decode_metadata() creates a DSACacheManager and never calls shutdown(). The manager owns C++ KV-cache and CUDA buffers. If the garbage collector frees it later, the free can run on a thread with no CUDA context. It can also leak memory into later tests in the same process. test_dsa_indexer.py uses the dsa_cache_manager fixture for this reason.
Use a fixture that yields the metadata and calls kv_cache_manager.shutdown() after the test.
As per path instructions, flag "Faulty setup/teardown, resource leaks, fixture contamination".

8 points — Performance refactor requiring deep reasoning about schedule lifetimes across speculative draft reuse and subsequent rebuilds. Most schedule code is extracted rather than newly implemented; effort comes from validating freshness and hook-order contracts, including the reported executor-wide elision.
Importance
Important — Skipping schedule and row-order refreshes changes a correctness-sensitive metadata freshness contract. The new guard before decode TopK and the DeepSeek-V4 hook forwarding show that safety depends on consumption order and inherited behavior.

Please advance the KV lengths and assert that slot mappings and generation indptrs are still refreshed while the schedule remains untouched. Returning immediately after setting indexer_schedule_stale would currently pass this test but leave draft KV writes using stale offsets.

Runtime part LGTM: the skipped on_update_kv_lens() is exactly the one the overlap kv_lens correction re-runs afterwards, and every backend's hook is an idempotent rebuild, so behavior is unchanged and each spec+overlap step saves one rebuild. For the rebase: keep main's decode_prologue early return (#20797) above the new block, and move the new test to tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/ (main renamed tests/unittest/_torch/executor).
…t down the cache manager
- test_mtp_schedule_skip: advance the KV lengths inside the draft loop and
check that slot mappings and gen indptrs are still rewritten (equal to a
full rebuild, different from the pre-advance values) while the schedule
buffers stay untouched. Build the metadata in a fixture that shuts the
DSACacheManager down on teardown.
- test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook: mark cpu_only so the CPU stage runs it.

The fixture enables mtp_index_share, so the test does not detect removal of the mtp_index_share gate in update_for_spec_dec(). Add a case that replaces this parameter with False, enters the draft loop, poisons the schedule buffers, and calls update_for_spec_dec(). Assert that indexer_schedule_stale is False and the schedule buffers are no longer poisoned.
Coverage summary: test_schedule_is_skipped_only_inside_the_draft_loop covers the full rebuild path, the sharing-enabled skipped path, KV-length buffer updates, and stale-marker clearing. The non-sharing draft-loop branch remains uncovered. The test is gated on CUDA, DeepGEMM, and the GPU architecture. Coverage needs follow-up.

Cover the expanded MTP schedule buffers.
_schedule_buffers() checks only scheduler_metadata_buffer, scheduler_metadata_buffer_full_next_n, and kv_lens_cuda_2d. _rebuild_indexer_schedule() also rebuilds kv_lens_expanded_cuda and scheduler_metadata_buffer_expanded when use_expanded_buffers_for_mtp is set. With MAX_DRAFT_TOKENS = 1, this fixture does not select that layout. A skip-gate regression that affects only the expanded buffers would pass this test.
Add a parameterized case that selects the expanded layout, for example SM90 with a draft depth above 1. In that case, poison and compare the active expanded buffers in the skip and rebuild checks. Do not poison or compare scheduler_metadata_buffer_full_next_n there, because the expanded layout does not rebuild it. Apply the same approach to the DSL layout when the test environment selects it.

[None][perf] DSA: skip the indexer schedule rebuild for index-sharing draft steps and the duplicated kv-lens hook
Description
Two dead-work elisions on the DSA decode path. Neither changes a device result: both remove work whose output is never read before it is rebuilt.
1. Indexer schedule rebuilds inside an index-sharing draft loop (
sparse/dsa/metadata.py,sparse/dsa/indexer.py).update_for_spec_dec() -> on_update_kv_lens()rebuilt the DeepGEMM MQA-logits schedule (the schedule launches, the 2D/expanded indexer KV-length copies and the GVR row order) before every draft step and once more after the last one. Withmtp_index_shareeveryupdate_for_spec_dec()made inside the draft loop prepares either a TopK-reuse draft step, which never reads the schedule, or the post-loop target forward, which rebuilds it in_preprocess_inputs.sparse_attn_indexer). Slot mappings and the gen indptrs are still refreshed on every call.DSAtrtllmAttentionMetadata.update_for_spec_dec()decides the skip itself (in_mtp_draft_loop and sparse_metadata_params.mtp_index_share) and callson_update_kv_lens(skip_indexer_schedule=True); the public parameterless call stays the full rebuild (the pre-draft refresh and the target forward use it). The schedule block is extracted into_rebuild_indexer_schedule().eagle3.pyis untouched.on_update_kv_lens()records the skip inindexer_schedule_staleuntil the next full rebuild (on_update_kv_lens()orIndexer.prepare_scheduler_metadata), and the TopK pass raises if it ever finds the marker set, so a misplaced skip fails loudly instead of running a stale schedule.DeepseekV4TrtllmAttentionMetadataoverrides the hook and forwards the argument, so its own rebuild still runs on every call.2. Duplicated
on_update_kv_lens()at the step boundary (pyexecutor/engine/runners/decoder/runner.py). Under the overlap scheduler with speculative decoding,_preprocess_inputscalled the hook before and again after the kv-length correction with nothing reading its results in between.DecoderRunner._preprocess_inputsnow skips the first call whenever the correction follows (has_kv_lens_correction, the same predicate the correction block uses). This is safe for every backend: eachon_update_kv_lenson main overwrites its outputs from the current lengths (AttentionMetadata no-op; TrtllmAttentionMetadata flag invalidation + Fp4MlaState; DSA; DeepSeek-V4 compressed-KV metadata and indices; QSA token mapping; both MiniMax-M3 classes).Effect, structurally: 5-12 launches per skipped call; two skipped calls per decode step at MTP-1, six at MTP-5.
Measured: standalone pair on upstream main (
ae4aa5d6c9+ this change, same image, with vs without the change via a temporary env switch since removed, GLM-5.2 NVFP4 TP8 batch-1 MTP-5 decode on GB300, 300 s each): device step p50 9.86 vs 9.96 ms (-0.10 ms, about 1 %), output tokens/s/user p50 +0.7 %, identical request counts and no errors.Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_dsa_indexer.py::test_indexer_decode_mtp_topk_reuse: the index-shared reuse steps always run with the MQA-logits schedule marked stale and poisoned (-1fill of the schedule buffers and the 2D KV lengths); the reuse must still copy the stash 1:1, and a step that computes TopK on the stale schedule must raise.tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_mtp_schedule_skip.py(new, GPU): on a realDSAtrtllmAttentionMetadatawith index share on,update_for_spec_dec()rebuilds the (poisoned) schedule outside the draft loop, leaves it untouched and setsindexer_schedule_staleinside it, andon_update_kv_lens()rebuilds it and clears the marker.tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py(new, CPU):DecoderRunner._preprocess_inputscalls the hook exactly once per step, seeing the corrected lengths when the correction applies and the original ones otherwise.Follow-ups (not in this PR)
_preprocess_inputs. It could be skipped after an audit of every reader between the last draft forward and that rebuild.PR Checklist
Dev Engineer Review
sparse_attn_indexerraisesRuntimeErrorif TopK uses a stale schedule. Metadata without the stale-state field is treated as not stale.skip_indexer_scheduleargument to the superclass. Calls that omit it retain the default behavior.QA Engineer Review
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/deepseek_v4/metadata.py—on_update_kv_lensaccepts and forwardsskip_indexer_schedule. Verify compatibility with superclass callers and the default path.tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/dsa/indexer.py— A scheduler rebuild clears the stale marker; TopK raisesRuntimeErrorif the schedule is stale. Verify both paths, including metadata without the marker.tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/dsa/metadata.py— KV-length updates can skip schedule and row-reorder rebuilding while updating other metadata. Verify draft-step conditions and recovery through a full rebuild.tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/decoder/inputs.py— Preprocessing skips the initial KV-length hook when a later speculative-overlap correction will run. Verify that the later hook receives corrected lengths and that other paths retain expected behavior.tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_dsa_indexer.py—test_indexer_decode_mtp_topk_reusecovers poisoned schedule reuse and stale-schedule rejection. This unit test does not require integration-list membership.tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/dsa/test_mtp_schedule_skip.py— Adds coverage for skipped schedule rebuilding, KV-length buffer updates, and full-rebuild recovery. This unit test does not require integration-list membership.tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_preprocess_inputs_kv_lens_hook.py— Adds CPU coverage for hook count and observed KV lengths under speculative-decoding and overlap conditions. This unit test does not require integration-list membership.
