Problem

FP8 KV caching on encoder-decoder models can overrun the cross-attention pool, causing CUDA errors or incorrect output. The earlier blanket rejection also disabled quantized decoder self-attention.

Root cause

Cross-attention writes unquantized K/V, but its pool inherited the model's self-attention KV quantization. Allocation and writes therefore disagreed on element size.

Fix

Reuse the external-drafter config-copy logic for cross-cache sizing and allocation, clearing both cached quantization flags on the copy. Cross-attention keeps the model dtype; decoder self-attention retains FP8/NVFP4 and existing hardware restrictions. The original model/per-layer configs are not mutated.

In response to the V1 capacity review, derive each V1 pool's token capacity from its own byte share and actual cache cost, while retaining any explicit user max_tokens cap. This prevents a quantized self pool from being capped by the larger model-dtype cross-cache cost. The resolved byte budgets already include the free-memory fraction, so V1 does not apply that fraction again after allocating the first pool. V2 continues to consume the split byte budgets directly.

A one-time startup message explains when the cross pool uses the model dtype while decoder self-attention retains its KV quantization, addressing the dtype notice review.

Remove the blanket rejection. Add a small T5 LLM API regression with KvCacheConfig(dtype="fp8"), checking FP8 self-cache, BF16 cross-cache, and three repeated generations; register it in L40S CI. No kernel or public API changes. The corrected cross pool requires more bytes than the incorrectly quantized allocation, so fixed-memory capacity can decrease.

Local testing

Latest review follow-up checks on Linux:

  • 76 source-isolated checks passed, executing the repository's capacity configuration, pool splitting, and V1 block-sizing code with native imports/config dependencies and CUDA memory reporting substituted. Coverage includes FP8/NVFP4/model-dtype costs, uneven byte shares, explicit token/byte caps, sequential pool construction, V2 cap preservation, config nonmutation, and the dtype notice.
  • The FP8 50/50 regression fails against the previous commit and passes with the fix. The committed CPU regression tests are included through the existing unittest/_torch/executor entry in l0_cpu.yml.
  • Python compilation, whitespace checks, and all pre-commit/commit-message hooks passed.
  • Native pytest collection remains blocked on this host by ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'torch'; no native or GPU execution is claimed.

Earlier contributor validation:
Windows source-isolated checks using the repository's actual config/allocator/estimator code, with native imports isolated and GPU-owning constructors mocked:

  • 86 CPU/component checks passed after merging upstream ea4d1d81, including V1/V2, FP16/BF16, explicit/checkpoint KV quantization, cached flags, and config nonmutation.
  • On the pre-merge revision, 768 old/new drafter comparisons passed with unchanged behavior; 48 allocation comparisons passed with only the intended cross dtype change and self-cache quantization preserved.
  • Python compilation, targeted Ruff/YAPF, legacy Ruff ratchet, spelling, whitespace, and CI-registration checks passed.

These are not native TensorRT-LLM or CUDA validation. Native test collection is blocked locally by missing TensorRT-LLM libraries. The new T5 GPU test, original GPU failure reproduction, and CI for this revision remain pending; no performance results are claimed. The existing FP32 byte-estimation mismatch remains outside this fix; sizing checks here cover FP16/BF16.

  • CPU regression tests included through the existing CI-listed test paths
  • T5 LLM API regression registered in L40S CI
  • Related documentation updated
  • Native/GPU validation of this revision

Dev Engineer Review

The cross-attention KV-cache pool now uses model-dtype sizing and allocation. A shallow ModelConfig copy disables KV-cache quantization for that pool without changing the original config or decoder self-attention settings. Decoder self-attention retains FP8/NVFP4 quantization and its existing hardware restrictions.

The change removes the encoder-decoder-wide rejection, preserving supported self-attention quantization while correcting the cross-cache allocation mismatch. The documentation describes this behavior for explicit quantization and checkpoint-inherited settings. Fixed-memory capacity may decrease because the correctly sized cross-cache pool uses more bytes. The supplied information reports no kernel or public API changes.

QA Engineer Review

Unit tests cover explicit and automatic KV-cache dtype selection, invalid dtype cases, SM107 NVFP4 downgrade behavior, and preservation of model and quantization settings. Cross-pool tests cover dtype, sizing, estimation mode, and config immutability. The T5 integration test checks FP8 self-cache, BF16 cross-cache, and repeated-generation consistency. It is listed in the L40S pre-merge test list.

The PR description reports successful CPU/component checks and source-isolated lint and validation checks. It also states that native TensorRT-LLM and CUDA validation was not completed, and that the new T5 GPU test and CI for this revision remain pending. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up until hardware-backed validation is available.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • docs/source/features/quantization.md — Documents that encoder-decoder cross-attention uses model-dtype KV while self-attention retains KV-cache quantization. Verify the documented explicit and checkpoint-inherited FP8/NVFP4 cases.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py — Applies an unquantized config copy to cross-cache estimation and manager construction. Verify sizing and allocation while confirming that self-cache settings and the original config remain unchanged.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/test_model_config.py — Covers explicit and automatic dtype choices, invalid inputs, SM107 downgrade behavior, and preservation of unrelated config settings. This unit-test file is not listed in integration test lists.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_dual_pool_kv_cache.py — Covers cross-pool dtype, sizing, estimation, and config immutability. This unit-test file is not listed in integration test lists.
  • tests/integration/defs/llmapi/test_llm_api_pytorch_t5.py — Adds a T5 API regression test for self- and cross-cache dtypes and repeated-generation consistency. The test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_l40s.yml.
  • tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_l40s.yml — Adds the T5 regression test to the L40S pre-merge CI list. This changes CI test selection; execution for this revision remains pending according to the supplied PR description.

Reject unsupported cross-attention cache formats in the existing configuration validator, including checkpoint-derived auto settings. Preserve decoder-only and unquantized configurations with focused regression coverage.

Fixes NVIDIA#19861.

Walkthrough

For PyTorch encoder-decoder models, cross-attention KV cost estimation and manager construction now use model-dtype storage, independently of self-attention KV quantization. Tests cover quantization selection and cache behavior. Documentation describes this distinction.

The rejection runs before the SM107 NVFP4→FP8 rewrite, and the tests confirm the config is left unchanged when it raises. Before approving, I'd like to see the following:

  • Linux test run: the "Local testing" section describes a mocked Windows harness, which doesn't show how these tests behave in our environment. Please post the pytest output for tests/unittest/_torch/test_model_config.py from a Linux machine with a TensorRT-LLM build comparable to CI (for example, the dev container from the build docs). We'll also run CI on our side, but a clean local Linux run should come first.
  • Evidence for the underlying bug: the new tests only check that a hand-built ModelConfig is rejected. Nothing in the PR shows that an FP8/NVFP4 KV cache on an encoder-decoder model actually overruns the cross-attention pool. Please:
    1. Add the failure from before this change to the PR description: the exact command, model, GPU, and error log.
    2. Ideally, add an integration test that loads a small encoder-decoder model through the LLM API with KvCacheConfig(dtype="fp8") and asserts the new error. That way CI checks the real load path instead of relying on a description of it.
  • Scope: this rejects every FP8/NVFP4 KV cache on encoder-decoder models, including decoder self-attention, but the bug as described only affects the cross-attention pool. If self-attention FP8 KV works on encoder-decoder models today, users lose that capability. Please show whether that combination works today (a run log or a test), or link a follow-up issue for keeping the cross pool in the model dtype so the restriction can be lifted later.

Report the resolved cache format and whether it came from checkpoint metadata or an explicit dtype override. Explain that auto preserves checkpoint quantization, and cover actionable guidance in existing regression tests.

@iamAbhi-916 thanks for the fix and for clarifying the error message. A reminder: @brnguyen2's review from 10-06 still needs replies on two points:

  1. Scope. The guard also turns off FP8/NVFP4 KV for decoder self-attention, which doesn't have this bug. The root cause is cross-attention only: CrossAttention creates its backend without quant_config (cross_attention.py:178), so it writes bf16 K/V into a cross pool that is sized and allocated as FP8. Could you keep only the cross pool in the model dtype? The external-drafter pool already does this (_get_draft_kv_model_config in _util.py). If you'd rather keep the guard as a stopgap, please say so and link a follow-up issue.
  2. Load-path test. A small T5 test through the LLM API with KvCacheConfig(dtype="fp8"). You don't have a GPU, so say so and we can help run it.

His Linux-run request is covered: the CPU stages in L0 #64204 pass on x86 and arm. The failures there are PrimTS attention tests and unrelated to this PR.

Thanks @karljang for confirming the Linux CPU coverage and offering GPU testing help.

I agree the current guard is broader than necessary. I’ll investigate following the external-drafter approach to keep the cross-attention pool in the model dtype while preserving FP8/NVFP4 for decoder self-attention and add a small T5 LLM API regression test with KvCacheConfig(dtype="fp8").

I don’t have a supported GPU locally, could you help run that test once the revision is ready?

Reuse the external-drafter config-copy logic for cross-cache sizing and allocation while preserving decoder self-attention quantization. Remove the broad encoder-decoder rejection and add CPU coverage plus a T5 LLM API regression in L40S CI.

py-filelock CVE-2026-112906 filelock is a platform-independent file lock for Python. From 4.1.0 until 4.2.1, SoftFileLock versions from 4.1.0 can reuse a stale observation when an attacker pre-dates and removes its own marker, at least two lock-user processes are waiting, coarse or matching modification times preserve the observation, and an honest contender creates a fresh marker on the reused inode, causing that live marker to be removed as stale. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.1. MEDIUM
py-filelock CVE-2026-112914 filelock is a platform-independent file lock for Python. From 4.1.0 until 4.2.1, SoftFileLock can restore a stale marker by name after moving it aside, allowing another local user with rename access in a non-sticky lock directory to swap in a symbolic link and, on a runtime that follows the link and a same-filesystem target, make the lock user hard-link one of its files into the lock directory. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.1. MEDIUM
py-filelock CVE-2026-112937 filelock is a platform-independent file lock for Python. From 4.1.0 until 4.2.1, ReadWriteLock can remove a randomized .filelock-* private-hard-link directory during cleanup, allowing another local user with rename access in a non-sticky parent to observe a live name or forge a dead-owner sweep name and rename a sibling directory onto it for deletion. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.1. MEDIUM
py-filelock CVE-2026-112940 filelock is a platform-independent file lock for Python. From 3.20.4 until 4.2.1, ReadWriteLock let SQLite reopen the database and side files by name; on POSIX systems an attacker with rename access in a non-sticky parent can swap those names to cause overwrite or unlink operations, while a writable adjacent hot journal is additionally required for attacker-chosen content overwrites. This issue is fixed in version 4.2.1. HIGH
