[TRTLLM-16806][feat] Enable TRTLLM Ulysses attention for MiniMax-H3 - #21222
MiniMax-H3 Ulysses now accepts TRTLLM and FLASHINFER alongside VANILLA and FA4. Restrictions on CFG, ring, and Attention2D parallelism remain.
TRTLLM adds opt-in padded dense self-attention. Callers must provide both key_padding_mask and discard_padded_queries. The path attends to valid token prefixes and restores the padded sequence shape. Unsupported masks and attention configurations are rejected. Without both arguments, the legacy path remains.
H3 attention enables padded-query discard. Packed rows using FA4 or TRTLLM must use trailing padding. Verify shared-mask reuse and collective compatibility in end-to-end execution.
Review findings and severity counts are unavailable. Reported validation includes 261 passing regression tests and 12 passing, 9 skipped distributed tests. New GPU tests were not run locally; runtime validation was pending retriggered CI.
QA Engineer Review
Modified tests cover backend acceptance, padding-mask support, trailing-padding validation, padded attention with unequal and zero valid lengths, unsupported configurations, and multi-GPU H3 runs. The B200 test database adds H3 cases for TRTLLM and FLASHINFER.
The changed integration test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_dgx_b200.yml. No manual-QA list changes are reported.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Confirm retriggered CI results and end-to-end execution, including shared-mask reuse and collective compatibility.

Description
MiniMax-H3 pads packed media tokens and text-refiner sequences for Ulysses. TRTLLM attention previously could not honor those padding masks, so H3 rejected this backend with Ulysses. Enable dense BF16 TRTLLM Ulysses by attending to each valid token prefix and restoring the padded output shape before the return collective. H3 explicitly marks padded query outputs as unused; unsupported mask layouts and attention combinations are rejected.
Also enable the existing FlashInfer padding-capable backend for H3 Ulysses and token refinement. Keep shared padding masks versioned so backend caches can reuse validated mask information across layers. Update the model documentation and add padding, pipeline-acceptance, distributed, and integration coverage.
Performance and Accuracy
Reran all three backends on 2× NVIDIA B200 using ulysses_size: 2, parallel_vae_size: 2 (width split), TP=1, BF16. The standard H3 two-GPU YAML was used with only the attention backend changed.
Same prompt, seed 42, 544×960, 124 frames at 24 fps, and 28 scheduler points / 27 executed denoising steps. Each backend performs the standard initialization warmup, one full generation warmup, then three measured generations. Generation timings exclude initialization, compilation warmup, and saving/encoding. Mean time per denoising step is mean denoising time divided by 27; individual logged step times are also saved.

Review follow-up: padding scope and compatibility
Rebased onto current main and retained its block-causal KV-cache path. Opted-in valid-prefix padding explicitly rejects a non-null KV plan, quantized attention, and sparse attention. Equal prefix lengths are executed as a batch; all-valid inputs use the original batched dense path without padding or concatenation copies.
The new prefix-mask behavior is opt-in through the internal discard_padded_queries=True contract already supplied by MiniMax-H3. Other TRTLLM callers retain upstream behavior, including its existing lack of general key-padding-mask support. The prior Hunyuan changes are removed: its model and transformer-test files match upstream, with no refiner fallback or new per-block mask processing. This preserves Hunyuan's existing quantized/sparse attention behavior rather than claiming new Hunyuan mask support or performance/quality results.
Added the six missing TRTLLM/FLASHINFER tensor-parallel selectors for TP2, TP4, and TP2+U2 in B200 CI, plus CUDNN rejection coverage. Regression tests cover prefix grouping, all-valid and empty inputs, KV-plan rejection, and unchanged legacy dense/quantized/sparse dispatch.
Validation on the review-fix commit: staged pre-commit checks passed, including AST validation of CI selectors. New GPU tests have not been run locally because no B200 allocation was available; runtime validation is pending the retriggered CI run. Earlier benchmark and test results below refer to their original commits.
Test Coverage
Required pre-commit checks passed: SKIP=type-check,clang-format,ruff-legacy pre-commit run -a.
Pipeline, transformer, and TRTLLM attention regression tests: 261 passed.
Real two-B200 distributed tests: 12 passed, 9 skipped, including TRTLLM synchronous and asynchronous Ulysses.
Full H3 generations completed with Vanilla, FlashInfer FA2, and TRTLLM, each with Ulysses=2.
Integration test cases and B200 CI entries added; full integration CI has not been run locally.

Walkthrough
MiniMax-H3 now accepts TRTLLM and FLASHINFER for Ulysses attention and key-padding masks. TRTLLM adds opt-in dense self-attention for trailing padding. Tests cover backend support and padded-attention behavior.
TrtllmAttention.forward accepts a padding mask and discard flag. When both are provided, it validates supported dense self-attention inputs, attends to valid prefixes, and pads outputs to the original sequence length. Tests cover varied prefix lengths, zero-length rows, rejected inputs, and legacy behavior without opt-in.
The pipeline and transformer accept TRTLLM and FLASHINFER for Ulysses and key-padding masks. Attention calls request padded-query discarding. FA4 and TRTLLM reject interior padding. Unit tests and the model documentation cover the updated backend support.
The supported B200 integration lane is safe, but direct runs on other two-GPU architectures fail instead of skipping.

The added test does not cover attention_mask=PredefinedAttentionMask.CAUSAL with a valid-prefix key_padding_mask. The existing causal-plus-padding test targets FlashInfer, not TrtllmAttention. Add a TRTLLM case that expects ValueError.
If this guard regresses, the call can reach _forward_padded_self_attention instead of rejecting the unsupported combination.

8 points — Enables padding support for an existing architecture. Review requires tracing caller guarantees, fused/separate-QKV slicing, recursive dispatch, mask-cache invalidation and distributed shape preservation. These interacting contracts justify deep review despite the compact backend patch.
Importance
Important — The new key_padding_mask/discard_padded_queries contract changes which tokens participate in attention and restores padded output shapes for Ulysses collectives. Cached prefix lengths introduce sensitive correctness and synchronization behavior.

HunyuanVideo15Attention.forward now enables TRTLLM's padded-prefix path, but no current Hunyuan test verifies that padded context is excluded from valid video outputs. The FP8 TRTLLM pipeline test uses the TRTLLM backend and checks only the output shape, so a regression in masked attention can pass.
Add an SM100/SM103-gated test in tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/test_hunyuan_video1_5_transformer.py. Use video tokens with valid and padded context tokens. Compare valid video outputs with a masked PyTorch reference, then perturb the padded context and assert that valid video outputs do not change.

Also enable the existing FlashInfer padding-capable backend for H3 Ulysses and token refinement. Keep shared padding masks versioned so backend caches can reuse validated mask information across layers. Update the model documentation and add padding, pipeline-acceptance, distributed, and integration coverage.

TRTLLM is 1.39× faster than Vanilla (28.0% lower generation latency) and 3.11× faster than FA2 (67.8% lower generation latency).
TRTLLM differs more from the other backends than Vanilla and FA2 differ from each other. These one-prompt, one-seed measurements do not establish a general perceptual-equivalence threshold.
The new prefix-mask behavior is opt-in through the internal
discard_padded_queries=Truecontract already supplied by MiniMax-H3. Other TRTLLM callers retain upstream behavior, including its existing lack of general key-padding-mask support. The prior Hunyuan changes are removed: its model and transformer-test files match upstream, with no refiner fallback or new per-block mask processing. This preserves Hunyuan's existing quantized/sparse attention behavior rather than claiming new Hunyuan mask support or performance/quality results.Added the six missing TRTLLM/FLASHINFER tensor-parallel selectors for TP2, TP4, and TP2+U2 in B200 CI, plus CUDNN rejection coverage.
