└── test_kv_cache_estimation.py # Update one existing mock expectation
Description
Initial context-worker startup retained its temporary profiling KV cache, causing the final cache allocation to fail even though cleanup had run. This change releases the temporary resource managers before NIXL shutdown only during unpublished initial sizing, so the final cache can reuse that memory.
The fix changes two runtime files (+15/−7) and one existing test assertion: three files total, +16/−8, with no new test cases. It is split from #21374 as one independent commit directly on main base 66190c8fd547a1d9c4fa93e3619a1ad56d8cb128.
Failure and investigation
The reproduced context configuration retained 49.78125 GiB per rank from its temporary profiling pool. Its final cache needed about 93.6 GiB while only about 78 GiB was free.
The executor-reuse change in #20359 changed profiling teardown from releasing the cache managers before NIXL to shutting down NIXL first. Both shutdown calls ran; cleanup was not skipped. Matched old-runtime controls and an isolated native registration/free-order probe reproduced the retention with NIXL-first cleanup and reclamation with pool-first cleanup. No peer transfer was needed.
These controls establish the cleanup-order problem. The precise internal UCX/CUDA owner retaining the allocation has not been identified. This issue is separate from the UCX timer-wheel timeout fixed in the UCX PR.
Fix and safety boundary
KvCacheCreator passes startup_profiling=True when releasing the initial profiling resources. That opt-in releases temporary resource managers while NIXL is still alive, then shuts down the transceiver.
This phase runs during executor construction, before the executor publishes its serving endpoints. Its local dummy requests do not transfer KV. Existing producer-thread joins, graph cleanup and CUDA synchronization remain in place. Default resource release and terminal serving shutdown retain the existing transceiver-before-manager order.
Validation
The following results were obtained before this PR split, on combined commit 2a8b1662501f57713de3771d25d7457517e121de, which included the Rubin staircase changes and this exact fix. Runs used immutable image19760 plus the validated UCX #12163 overlay. They are evidence from that combined version, not fresh tests of this standalone branch; no jobs were launched for the split.
114 existing tests passed across executor rebind, graph lifecycle and KV-cache estimation. Repository pre-commit checks passed.
Real context-startup probe 921050 reclaimed exactly 49.78125 GiB on every rank, allocated the original final KV-cache quota and reached health 200.
All four full 1,319-question GSM8K runs passed the existing accuracy and real MTP acceptance-length criteria, with forced acceptance disabled for these accuracy runs.
All four original disaggregated performance configurations started successfully and completed their full 3,600-second measurement phase, totaling 23,585 measured requests with zero errors or cancellations.
The complete configuration, accuracy/AL and performance comparison tables are in the staircase PR. These whole-workload results do not isolate the performance effect of this startup cleanup change.

Dev Engineer Review
PyExecutor.release_resources adds a keyword-only startup_profiling flag that defaults to False. During startup profiling, resource managers shut down before the KV transceiver. Default cleanup retains the existing transceiver-first order. KvCacheCreator enables the new order only while cleaning up the unpublished sizing executor.
This limits the ordering change to startup profiling and preserves the default API behavior. The source summary reports no changes to producer-thread joins, graph cleanup, or CUDA synchronization. The precise owner of the retained profiling memory remains unidentified.
QA Engineer Review
The existing KV-cache estimation test changes its expectation to require release_resources(startup_profiling=True) on the profiling-failure path. No test-list changes are reported. This unit test does not verify the shutdown order or the default cleanup order, so coverage of the new behavior needs follow-up. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py: Startup profiling cleanup now passes startup_profiling=True. Verify the flag is used only for unpublished initial sizing.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py: release_resources adds a keyword-only flag. Verify startup profiling shuts down resource managers before the KV transceiver, while the default path retains transceiver-first cleanup.
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_estimation.py: The profiling-failure test now expects the explicit flag. It covers the call argument but does not assert cleanup order. It is a unit test, not an integration test-list entry.
Keep NIXL alive while initial profiling KV pools are released so their
VMM allocations are reclaimed before the final cache is built. Opt in only
at unpublished startup profiling; retain default and terminal cleanup
ordering. Update the existing mock expectation for the explicit argument.

The executor now accepts a startup-profiling flag when releasing resources. During startup profiling, it shuts down resource managers before the KV transceiver. Other cleanup keeps the prior transceiver-first order. Profiling teardown and its test pass the flag.

Flagged cleanup and profiling teardown tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py, tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_estimation.py
release_resources accepts a keyword-only startup_profiling flag and forwards it to execution-resource cleanup. When the flag is true, resource managers shut down before the KV transceiver; otherwise, the prior transceiver-first order remains. Profiling teardown passes the flag, and the test expects it.
Startup profiling uses the intended cleanup order. No merge-blocking defect was established; an automated regression test is recommended.

Explanation
The title states the primary change: startup profiling KV cache is released before NIXL shutdown. The raw summary and objectives confirm that release_resources gains a startup_profiling flag that orders pool release ahead of transceiver shutdown during initial sizing. The title follows the repository template with [None][fix]. It is specific and matches the changeset.

Explanation
The description covers the problem, root cause investigation, the fix and its safety boundary, validation, and related PRs. It follows the repository template sections: Description, Test Coverage (noted as no new tests, with an existing mock updated), and the PR checklist. The Test Coverage section does not list specific tests that safeguard the change. The description also cites validation from a combined commit rather than this standalone branch, which the author states openly. The description is thorough and mostly complete, so it passes.

Add a startup-profiling cleanup-order regression test.
The estimation test verifies only that startup_profiling=True is forwarded. The executor test covers only the default order. A regression to transceiver-first startup cleanup could pass both tests and restore the cache allocation failure.
Extend tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_executor_resource_rebind.py to call release_resources(startup_profiling=True) and assert that graph cleanup and synchronization occur before resource-manager shutdown, and that resource-manager shutdown occurs before transceiver shutdown.

Extend the executor resource-rebind test for release_resources to call it with
startup_profiling=True and assert that graph cleanup and synchronization happen
before resource-manager shutdown, which happens before kv-cache transceiver
shutdown. Keep the test focused on verifying this cleanup order.
