[TRTLLM-17272][feat] Add public LLM health queries and a private-access lint for the serving frontends - #21393
BaseLLM now exposes check_health(), fatal_error, shutdown_started, and engine_dead. _check_health remains as a compatibility alias for one release. GenerationExecutor and GenerationExecutorProxy also expose public health state.
HTTP, SMG gRPC, and OpenEngine gRPC health paths now use the public LLM health interface instead of private executor members. The changes retain separate handling for encode-only mode, missing executors, shutdown, fatal errors, and VisualGen.
The private-access lint checks serving and gRPC frontend code against a shrinking baseline. The baseline contains 43 entries totaling 50 occurrences. New accesses and unresolved ownership fail the lint.
Verify the public API and health behavior across supported serving modes. Reported GPU and real-engine checks remain outstanding.
QA Engineer Review
Test changes add public runtime API, HTTP health, SMG health, and private-access lint tests for serving, VisualGen, and OpenEngine. OpenEngine tests and fixtures now use public health attributes. test_fatal_error_health_check.py removes frontend health tests that moved to dedicated files.
l0_cpu.yml registers the public runtime API, SMG health, HTTP health, and private-access lint tests. No corresponding qa/ entries were reported.
Reported results include 10 lint tests, 28 runtime API and HTTP health tests, 7 SMG health tests, 76 affected OpenEngine tests after a metrics-fake fix, 64 fatal-error health tests, and 64 API-stability tests. An earlier OpenEngine run had a reported non-reproducible teardown race. GPU end-to-end health, SMG tests on A10, real-engine OpenEngine conformance, and encode-only health on A100 remain for CI.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. CPU coverage is broad and registered in CI. The GPU and real-engine checks are not reported as complete.

Description
The HTTP server, the SMG gRPC frontend and the OpenEngine gRPC frontend learned whether the engine
is healthy by reading private members of LLM and its executor (_check_health, _executor, _fatal_error, _engine_dead). This PR adds the public health API on the classes that own those
members, switches all three frontends to it with no behavior change, and lands a private-access
lint with a checked-in baseline that only shrinks, so new cross-package private reads cannot creep
back into the frontends.
Part of the trtllm-serve refactor (epic TRTLLM-17056, task TRTLLM-17272: public runtime API for
the frontends). Builds on "Expose standard gRPC health in OpenEngine" (#20437, merged), whose
health predicate this PR re-expresses through the new public members.
New public members
LLM.check_health() (status prototype): public rename of _check_health, body unchanged —
healthy while the encoder executor exists for encode_only=True, else delegates to the
generation executor's check_health() (drains queued background errors; the proxy also polls
worker liveness), unhealthy without a generation executor.
LLM.fatal_error (property): the unrecoverable engine error the executor recorded, or None.
LLM.shutdown_started (property): whether generation-executor shutdown has begun.
GenerationExecutor.fatal_error and engine_dead; GenerationExecutorProxy.engine_dead also
reads the sticky worker-death flag, which can be set before the error is recorded.
All four LLM members live on the base class, so the multimodal encoder and the async LLM inherit
them. _check_health stays for one release as an alias of check_health because ai-dynamo's
TRT-LLM backend (components/src/dynamo/trtllm/engine.py) looks the private name up; the three
frontends and the in-repo tests use only the public names, and the lint rejects in-repo use of the
alias. The members are recorded in the non-committed api-stability reference only
(tests/unittest/api_stability/references/llm.yaml; references_committed/ is unchanged).
Behavior
No behavior change. Per path:
Case
Before
After
LLM / MM encoder / async LLM on HTTP /health
hasattr(generator, '_check_health') true → call it
VisualGen branch → 200 (never asked for health members)
HTTP fatal error, shutdown not started
one SIGINT, 503
fatal_error set, shutdown_started false → one SIGINT, 503
HTTP fatal error, shutdown already started
no SIGINT
shutdown_started true → no SIGINT
SMG encode-only engine
"Executor is not available"
same, via the public args.encode_only
SMG fatal error
"<Type>: <first line, max 200 chars>"
byte-identical (wire-visible strings kept)
OpenEngine readiness
engine predicate AND coordinator group readiness
same; the AND stays in the OpenEngine adapter
OpenEngine liveness
fails only on fatal error / worker death
same, via engine_dead
Two differences no production path reaches: a fake VisualGen generator that defines _check_health
is no longer consulted by HTTP /health (no test requests it), and SMG after llm.shutdown()
would answer "Executor is unhealthy" instead of "Executor is not available" (the SMG server stops
gRPC before llm.shutdown()).
The private-access lint
tests/unittest/serve/test_private_access_lint.py counts, per AST node, every access to a private
member that belongs to another TensorRT-LLM package, in tensorrt_llm/serve/ (without serve/scripts/), tensorrt_llm/commands/ and tensorrt_llm/grpc/ (without generated protobuf
modules). An access is <receiver>._name or a getattr/hasattr/setattr/delattr call with the
literal name, receiver not self/cls/super(); a._b._c is two accesses. Ownership comes from
a pinned OVERRIDES table, then a definition index over tensorrt_llm/**/*.py(i).
The baseline (tests/unittest/serve/private_access_baseline.yaml, keyed by path, enclosing scope
and member) lists the accesses that remain after this PR: 43 entries, 50 accesses, MAX_TOTAL=50.
It only shrinks — removals lower count and MAX_TOTAL in the same PR; a pure code move re-keys
the entry's path/scope (and any OVERRIDES key on the moved path) without changing the total.
Every failure message says what to change and who reviews.
Counts on the merge base: 71 cross-package private accesses before, 50 after; the 21 removed are
the health reads (HTTP 5, SMG 7, OpenEngine 9 — the nine include the six #20437 added, replaced by engine_dead). Six accesses landed upstream between this PR's first baseline and the current merge
base and are recorded in the initial baseline rather than converted (their public accessors belong
to the follow-up work of this task):
two in the new _bind_launcher_uds in commands/serve.py (_executor, _multi_frontend_ipc_dir);
two in the new OpenAIServer._on_launcher_lost (_executor, _set_fatal_error — a private
write; a public fatal-error recording API needs its own API review).
Two generic names OpenEngine reads on its own media-budget class (_condition, _cancelled in grpc/openengine/request_mapping.py) are pinned same-package in OVERRIDES.
Because CI's change-based test selection runs only visual_gen/ test entries on VisualGen-only
pull requests and only unittest/grpc/openengine/ entries on OpenEngine-only pull requests, the
lint has three registrations: the main file under tests/unittest/serve/, a VisualGen part under tests/unittest/serve/api/visual_gen/ (scans the existing frontend scopes, including the VisualGen
handlers in serve/openai_server.py, and checks that each scope exists),
and an OpenEngine part under tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/ (scans tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/
and fails if that directory disappears without re-pointing the lint).
Tests
The three frontend health tests that re-implemented production logic
(TestGrpcHealthCheck, TestOpenAIHealthEndpoint, TestBaseLLMCheckHealth in tests/unittest/executor/test_fatal_error_health_check.py) are replaced by tests of the production
code: tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_public_runtime_api.py (the new members on real LLM / GenerationExecutor objects), tests/unittest/serve/test_serve_health.py (the production OpenAIServer._check_health / health handlers), and tests/unittest/grpc/smg/test_smg_health.py
(the production GrpcRequestManager.health_check, wire strings pinned byte for byte). The HTTP
tests call the production methods on a stand-in object carrying exactly the attributes they read,
because the planned shared serve fixture factory is not on main yet; they can move onto it later. _check_health test doubles across the OpenEngine tests are renamed to the public name, and every
LLM double that starts an OpenEngine server gains engine_dead (the production code now reads it
where it used a tolerant getattr). tensorrt_llm/serve/AGENTS.md does not exist yet; the pull
request that introduces it adds the "only public runtime APIs in the frontends" guidance there.
Reviewer follow-up in ef64f31e12: fixed encoder/proxy test cleanup, rejected duplicate baseline
keys, enforced an exact baseline total, and added focused scanner/companion regression coverage.
All 42 focused CPU health/lint tests pass with unraisable cleanup warnings treated as errors;
formatting and commit hooks pass. API and multi-GPU approval requirements remain outstanding.
CI bookkeeping
Multi-GPU table: no changes (serve/openai_server.py and tensorrt_llm/executor/ are already
listed, so the multi-GPU stages run on this PR and need the approval label).
CODEOWNERS: none.
legacy-files.txt: none (all new files are ruff-formatted test files).
Test lists: six new file entries in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml
(the lint, its VisualGen and OpenEngine parts, and the three production health test files); all
six files carry pytest.mark.cpu_only and map to the CPU stages via scripts/test_to_stage_mapping.py.
pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/grpc/smg/test_smg_health.py (with requirements-grpc-smg.txt
installed, as the CI stage does) → 7 passed
pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/grpc/openengine → 395 passed before the metrics-fake fix,
then the affected files re-run green (76 passed); one earlier run saw a non-reproducible
"Event loop is closed" teardown race in test_metrics.py::test_prometheus_contract (from the
merged OpenEngine Prometheus metrics PR), noted here for CI babysitting context
Lint self-checks: 50 cross-package accesses found, 0 unclassifiable, baseline total 50 equals MAX_TOTAL; negative checks (a planted new access in the HTTP server and in an OpenEngine
servicer, a lowered baseline count) each fail with the intended message and were reverted. The
compare engine's failure branches (new access, stale entry, stale override, unclassifiable,
prefix scoping) are additionally exercised by a local property-based harness with a mutation
gate (11 planted bugs, all detected); per repository test policy the committed tests pin the
counting rule with small inline inputs instead of replaying that harness.
git grep confirms no _check_health / _fatal_error / _engine_dead reads of another
package's members remain in serve/, commands/, grpc/ outside the recorded baseline.
Left to CI (GPU): the end-to-end /health test, the SMG gRPC tests on A10, the OpenEngine
capability conformance test against a real engine, and the encode-only check_health test on
A100.
Requesting the api-compatible label (new non-committed LLM members: method check_health,
properties fatal_error, shutdown_started, engine_dead).

…ss lint for the serving frontends
The HTTP server, the SMG gRPC frontend and the OpenEngine gRPC frontend
learned engine health by reading private members (_check_health, _executor,
_fatal_error, _engine_dead). Add the public health API on the classes that
own those members and switch all three frontends to it, with no behavior
change:
- BaseLLM.check_health() (public rename of _check_health; the private name
stays for one release as an alias for out-of-tree callers that look it
up), BaseLLM.fatal_error, BaseLLM.shutdown_started, BaseLLM.engine_dead.
- GenerationExecutor.fatal_error and engine_dead;
GenerationExecutorProxy.engine_dead also reads the sticky worker-death
flag set before the fatal error is recorded.
Add a private-access lint (tests/unittest/serve/test_private_access_lint.py)
that counts cross-package private accesses in tensorrt_llm/serve,
tensorrt_llm/commands and tensorrt_llm/grpc against a checked-in baseline
(tests/unittest/serve/private_access_baseline.yaml) that only shrinks, with
companion test files under tests/unittest/serve/api/visual_gen/ and
tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/ so VisualGen-only and OpenEngine-only pull
requests keep running the check.
Replace the three frontend health mirror tests with tests of the production
code, rename the _check_health test doubles to the public name, and register
the new CPU test files in l0_cpu.yml.

Add focused synthetic coverage for scanner ownership and comparison failures.
The live-tree assertion can remain green if scan() stops returning cross or unresolved, or if _compare() stops reporting those cases while the current baseline still matches. Add a tmp_path test that calls scan(root, prefixes) and _compare() directly.
Cover one representative case for each distinct branch: cross-package ownership with a new-access error, unresolved ownership, third-party ownership, an OVERRIDES verdict, stale baseline and override errors, and a prefix-limited stale check. Assert the returned verdicts and error messages. Do not add duplicate cases for classifications that share the same branch.

_executor._fatal_error/_engine_dead.GenerationExecutor.fatal_errorandengine_dead;GenerationExecutorProxy.engine_deadalsoreads the sticky worker-death flag, which can be set before the error is recorded.
All four LLM members live on the base class, so the multimodal encoder and the async LLM inherit
them.
_check_healthstays for one release as an alias ofcheck_healthbecause ai-dynamo'sTRT-LLM backend (
components/src/dynamo/trtllm/engine.py) looks the private name up; the threefrontends and the in-repo tests use only the public names, and the lint rejects in-repo use of the
alias. The members are recorded in the non-committed api-stability reference only
(
tests/unittest/api_stability/references/llm.yaml;references_committed/is unchanged).Behavior
No behavior change. Per path:
/healthhasattr(generator, '_check_health')true → call itgenerator.check_health()(same function)/healthhasattrfalse → 200fatal_errorset,shutdown_startedfalse → one SIGINT, 503shutdown_startedtrue → no SIGINTargs.encode_only"<Type>: <first line, max 200 chars>"engine_deadTwo differences no production path reaches: a fake VisualGen generator that defines
_check_healthis no longer consulted by HTTP
/health(no test requests it), and SMG afterllm.shutdown()would answer "Executor is unhealthy" instead of "Executor is not available" (the SMG server stops
gRPC before
llm.shutdown()).The private-access lint
tests/unittest/serve/test_private_access_lint.pycounts, per AST node, every access to a privatemember that belongs to another TensorRT-LLM package, in
tensorrt_llm/serve/(withoutserve/scripts/),tensorrt_llm/commands/andtensorrt_llm/grpc/(without generated protobufmodules). An access is
<receiver>._nameor a getattr/hasattr/setattr/delattr call with theliteral name, receiver not
self/cls/super();a._b._cis two accesses. Ownership comes froma pinned
OVERRIDEStable, then a definition index overtensorrt_llm/**/*.py(i).The baseline (
tests/unittest/serve/private_access_baseline.yaml, keyed by path, enclosing scopeand member) lists the accesses that remain after this PR: 43 entries, 50 accesses,
MAX_TOTAL=50.It only shrinks — removals lower
countandMAX_TOTALin the same PR; a pure code move re-keysthe entry's
path/scope(and anyOVERRIDESkey on the moved path) without changing the total.Every failure message says what to change and who reviews.
Counts on the merge base: 71 cross-package private accesses before, 50 after; the 21 removed are
the health reads (HTTP 5, SMG 7, OpenEngine 9 — the nine include the six #20437 added, replaced by
engine_dead). Six accesses landed upstream between this PR's first baseline and the current mergebase and are recorded in the initial baseline rather than converted (their public accessors belong
to the follow-up work of this task):
grpc/openengine/capabilities.py(_hf_model_config,_registered_model_type)from "Support audio inputs in OpenEngine gRPC" ([None][feat] Support audio inputs in OpenEngine gRPC #20655);
_bind_launcher_udsincommands/serve.py(_executor,_multi_frontend_ipc_dir);OpenAIServer._on_launcher_lost(_executor,_set_fatal_error— a privatewrite; a public fatal-error recording API needs its own API review).
Two generic names OpenEngine reads on its own media-budget class (
_condition,_cancelledingrpc/openengine/request_mapping.py) are pinned same-package inOVERRIDES.Because CI's change-based test selection runs only
visual_gen/test entries on VisualGen-onlypull requests and only
unittest/grpc/openengine/entries on OpenEngine-only pull requests, thelint has three registrations: the main file under
tests/unittest/serve/, a VisualGen part undertests/unittest/serve/api/visual_gen/(scans the existing frontend scopes, including the VisualGenhandlers in
serve/openai_server.py, and checks that each scope exists),and an OpenEngine part under
tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/(scanstensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/and fails if that directory disappears without re-pointing the lint).
Tests
The three frontend health tests that re-implemented production logic
(
TestGrpcHealthCheck,TestOpenAIHealthEndpoint,TestBaseLLMCheckHealthintests/unittest/executor/test_fatal_error_health_check.py) are replaced by tests of the productioncode:
tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_public_runtime_api.py(the new members on realLLM/GenerationExecutorobjects),tests/unittest/serve/test_serve_health.py(the productionOpenAIServer._check_health/healthhandlers), andtests/unittest/grpc/smg/test_smg_health.py(the production
GrpcRequestManager.health_check, wire strings pinned byte for byte). The HTTPtests call the production methods on a stand-in object carrying exactly the attributes they read,
because the planned shared serve fixture factory is not on main yet; they can move onto it later.
_check_healthtest doubles across the OpenEngine tests are renamed to the public name, and everyLLM double that starts an OpenEngine server gains
engine_dead(the production code now reads itwhere it used a tolerant
getattr).tensorrt_llm/serve/AGENTS.mddoes not exist yet; the pullrequest that introduces it adds the "only public runtime APIs in the frontends" guidance there.
Reviewer follow-up in

All 42 focused CPU health/lint tests pass with unraisable cleanup warnings treated as errors;
formatting and commit hooks pass. API and multi-GPU approval requirements remain outstanding.

All CPU checks ran on this branch rebased onto the current main, with the compiled extensions of
the same main commit (serial pytest):
pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/serve/test_private_access_lint.py tests/unittest/serve/api/visual_gen/test_private_access_lint_visual_gen.py tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_private_access_lint_openengine.py→ 10 passedpytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_public_runtime_api.py tests/unittest/serve/test_serve_health.py→ 28 passedpytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/grpc/smg/test_smg_health.py(withrequirements-grpc-smg.txtinstalled, as the CI stage does) → 7 passed
pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/grpc/openengine→ 395 passed before the metrics-fake fix,then the affected files re-run green (76 passed); one earlier run saw a non-reproducible
"Event loop is closed" teardown race in
test_metrics.py::test_prometheus_contract(from themerged OpenEngine Prometheus metrics PR), noted here for CI babysitting context
pytest -m cpu_only tests/unittest/executor/test_fatal_error_health_check.py→ 64 passedpytest tests/unittest/api_stability→ 64 passed (references_committed/unchanged)MAX_TOTAL; negative checks (a planted new access in the HTTP server and in an OpenEngineservicer, a lowered baseline count) each fail with the intended message and were reverted. The
compare engine's failure branches (new access, stale entry, stale override, unclassifiable,
prefix scoping) are additionally exercised by a local property-based harness with a mutation
gate (11 planted bugs, all detected); per repository test policy the committed tests pin the
counting rule with small inline inputs instead of replaying that harness.
