Description

Stress coverage for Muse Spark Open, from feat/musespark-open, where @brnguyen2 wrote it.

Stress test. stress_test.py gets a Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4 case at TP4, for one GB300 node. Its server runs the model's serving recipe:

  • TP4/EP4, max_batch_size 256, max_num_tokens 8192, max_seq_len 49152;
  • FP8 KV cache with block reuse, chunked prefill;
  • TRTLLM attention and MoE backends, NCCL all-reduce, CUDA graph padding.

The case shares the large-MoE timeouts with DeepSeek, uses a 0.4 KV cache fraction, allows two hours for the server to load the checkpoint, and caps the stress stage at 30 requests per second.

Attach mode for the disaggregated cancellation marathon. The marathon harness launches its disaggregated cluster on one node. A Muse Spark Open 1P1D cluster needs two TP4 instances, and they don't fit on one 4-GPU node. With stress_config.external_cluster, the harness attaches to a cluster launched elsewhere instead:

  • At setup() it checks that the orchestrator, and any worker health URLs given, answer HTTP 200.
  • Its probes go to the orchestrator, and its log scanner tails the worker and server logs the block names.
  • ${VAR} references in the block resolve at setup(). A checked-in YAML therefore parses and validates with nothing exported, and the marathon skips while the variables are unset.
  • Attach mode supports log_only only: fault injection signals and respawns worker processes the harness launched itself.

marathon_python_v2_musespark_open_attach.yaml runs Muse Spark Open 1P1D this way, and configs/README.md documents the mode. Adding the Muse cases to QA's test lists is left to QA.

Test Coverage

  • New CPU tests in test_disagg_cancel_stress.py:
    • an attach YAML parses and validates with its variables unset;
    • full_cancel_poison and unknown worker roles are rejected;
    • setup() resolves the variables, binds the endpoint and registers the logs without launching anything, and fails on an unset variable;
    • the log scanner fails fast on a pattern in an attached worker's log.
  • On GB300, with a CI-built main wheel and this branch's Python:
    • stress_test/disagg_cancel: 103 passed with the marathons deselected, including the check that every marathon YAML, the new one too, parses and validates. The Muse attach marathon skips without its variables.
    • test_run_stress_test[Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4_tp4-stress_time_180s_timeout_300s-GUARANTEED_NO_EVICT-stress-stage-alone] passes on the llm-models checkpoint. The server starts with the recipe above (TP4/EP4, FP8 KV cache, TRTLLM attention, a 0.4 KV cache fraction), and 1,200 requests at concurrency 128 complete with no errors.

Dev Engineer Review

  • The change adds Muse Spark Open TP4 stress settings and an external-cluster attach path for the disaggregated cancellation marathon.
  • Attach mode adds environment-variable expansion, health checks, log registration, and endpoint binding. It supports log_only; it rejects full_cancel_poison and does not tear down the external cluster.
  • The supplied summary reports unset-variable handling at setup, while YAML parsing and validation work without environment values. Verify that configuration errors remain clear and that external-cluster resources are not modified during teardown.
  • No test execution results or current review findings were supplied. Test status and review severity counts are unavailable.
  • QA’s manual list includes the existing DeepSeek marathon entry, but not the new Muse attach configuration. The CI/manual-QA lists contain no matching attach-mode test entry. QA should confirm whether the new case belongs in either list.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified test code: tests/integration/defs/stress_test/disagg_cancel/test_disagg_cancel_stress.py adds coverage for attach-config parsing, validation, setup, environment-variable resolution, and log scanning. The reported cases cover unsupported worker roles and full_cancel_poison; the integration test is not listed in the CI or manual-QA lists.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The supplied summary reports CPU tests and a GB300 stress run, but does not provide execution records. QA should decide whether to add the Muse attach test to the manual-QA list.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tests/integration/defs/stress_test/disagg_cancel/configs/README.md — Documents attach-mode requirements and limitations. Check that the documented environment-variable and cleanup behavior matches the harness.
  • tests/integration/defs/stress_test/disagg_cancel/configs/marathon_python_v2_musespark_open_attach.yaml — Adds the Muse Spark Open 1P1D attach configuration. Verify its environment settings, health endpoints, log paths, and log_only mode on the target cluster; it is not listed in the CI or manual-QA lists.
  • tests/integration/defs/stress_test/disagg_cancel/harness.py — Adds external-cluster configuration and setup behavior. Verify variable resolution, health-check failures, endpoint binding, log scanning, and the restriction against fault injection.
  • tests/integration/defs/stress_test/disagg_cancel/test_disagg_cancel_stress.py — Adds attach-mode parsing, validation, setup, and log-scanning tests. The changed integration test is absent from the CI and manual-QA lists.
  • tests/integration/defs/stress_test/stress_test.py — Adds Muse Spark Open TP4 model and server settings, including timeout, KV-cache fraction, startup wait, and stress request-rate settings. Verify these values against the intended GB300 serving recipe.

…llation marathon attach mode

- stress_test.py: a Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4 TP4 case with the
  model's single-node GB300 recipe (TP4/EP4, FP8 KV cache with block reuse,
  chunked prefill, TRTLLM attention and MoE, NCCL all-reduce, CUDA graph
  padding), the large-MoE timeouts, a 0.4 KV cache fraction and a 30 req/s
  cap on the stress stage's request count.
- The disaggregated-cancellation marathon can attach to an externally
  launched cluster (stress_config.external_cluster): the harness probes the
  given orchestrator and tails the given worker logs instead of launching
  workers. Attach mode supports log_only only.
- marathon_python_v2_musespark_open_attach.yaml: Muse Spark Open 1P1D in
  attach mode, skipped unless the cluster's environment variables are set.
- Tests for the attach mode's parsing, validation, setup and log scanning.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds external-cluster attach mode to disaggregated cancellation stress tests. It also adds Muse Spark Open configurations and request limits to the stress-test matrix.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 2198a

The new attach-mode marathon can pass without scanning a worker's log if its path is wrong or its mount is missing. This affects only a test harness, but the failure goes unnoticed. Add a setup-time check that configured log files exist before relying on attach-mode results.

Test the external health-check result, not only its URL.

This mock records the URL but bypasses _check_external_endpoint. A regression that accepts HTTP 500 or a connection failure would leave this setup test green. Add a focused test with a controlled urlopen response and error. Assert that setup rejects an unhealthy endpoint. As per path instructions, “Flag mocks, stubs, or fake objects ... only when they bypass that behavior.”

Require external worker logs to be readable before the marathon starts.

If an expanded worker log path is wrong or its filesystem is not mounted, _LogSource.poll silently waits for the file on every scan. Successful probes can then pass the marathon without checking that worker for hard-zero patterns. Validate each required external log path during attach setup, and fail setup if the file cannot be read. Apply the same check to a configured server log.
