Gaussian fits launch separate operations for model evaluation, analytic derivatives and weighting. This adds opt-in public cuTile kernels for the residual and weighted Jacobian, reducing evaluation launches while retaining CuPy width powers, normal-equation contractions and the existing LM solver.

Use fit_dipoles(..., backend="cutile", fusion=True) or cuphoton xfit fit-dipoles --backend cutile --fusion. Fusion defaults to False. Device results and pipeline configuration support the same selection and record the chosen backend. Each fit owns its workspace and uses the caller's CuPy stream. Gaussian difference and split fits support fusion; sampled-stamp and finite-difference fits reject it. This PR builds on #82.

Tests cover weighted and compacted inputs, extreme widths, rank and covariance diagnostics, evaluation budgets, concurrent streams, retained results, and CLI artifacts. Local validation passed all 48 selected cuTile GPU cases without skips or teardown errors, plus 563 CPU tests (110 expected GPU/optional skips).

Historical measurements of the public Gaussian fixture on an NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition gave these warmed end-to-end fit times:

Batch CuPy median Fused cuTile median Speedup
16 32.84 ms 22.18 ms 1.48×
256 53.80 ms 41.31 ms 1.30×

These are FP64 difference-mode fits at 17×21 with unchanged solver defaults, including host result materialization. Six balanced rounds used a fresh process, two warmups and one timed fit per sample. These synthetic results do not establish full-pipeline or multi-GPU speedups. Complete process time, including imports and warmups, was higher for cuTile.

Historical benchmark runtime and reproduction

The baseline was public commit 38d8451; the candidate used the fusion implementation retained in this PR. The runtime used CPython 3.14.6 free-threaded with the GIL naturally disabled, NumPy 2.4.6, CuPy 14.1.1, cuTile 1.6.0, driver 610.57.04 and the CUDA 13.3 compiler. Both arms used the same 32-logical-CPU affinity, BLAS/OpenMP thread limits of two, a 1 GiB CuPy pool limit, one idle GPU without MPS, and process-local transparent huge pages disabled. Complete process time was higher for cuTile; that measurement includes imports and both warmups and does not isolate compilation cost.

To run the same fixture, set BASELINE and CANDIDATE to those source checkouts, PYTHON to the shared runtime, GPU to one idle GPU and CPUSET to the same assigned CPUs for both arms. The measured processes also inherited the Linux huge-page setting described above:

export OMP_NUM_THREADS=2 OPENBLAS_NUM_THREADS=2 MKL_NUM_THREADS=2
export NUMEXPR_NUM_THREADS=2 CUPY_GPU_MEMORY_LIMIT=1073741824
export CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES="$GPU"
export CUDA_MPS_PIPE_DIRECTORY="$(mktemp -d)"
unset CUDA_MPS_LOG_DIRECTORY CUDA_DEVICE_MAX_CONNECTIONS
batch=16  # Repeat with 256.
taskset -c "$CPUSET" env -u PYTHON_GIL -u PYTHONOPTIMIZE PYTHONPATH="$BASELINE/src" "$PYTHON" -B \
  "$CANDIDATE/examples/xfit/benchmark_gaussian.py" \
--backend cupy --batch "$batch" --dtype float64 --mode difference \
  --height 17 --width 21 --warmup 2 --repeat 1
taskset -c "$CPUSET" env -u PYTHON_GIL -u PYTHONOPTIMIZE PYTHONPATH="$CANDIDATE/src" "$PYTHON" -B \
  "$CANDIDATE/examples/xfit/benchmark_gaussian.py" \
--backend cutile --fusion --batch "$batch" --dtype float64 --mode difference \
  --height 17 --width 21 --warmup 2 --repeat 1

Run six rounds, alternating both batch order and backend order: rounds 0/2/4 use batches 16,256 and CuPy,cuTile; rounds 1/3/5 reverse both. Independent runs of the exact fixture passed all-field comparison at rtol=atol=5e-12, with exact discrete values and NaN masks. Timed calls additionally checked the example's status and evaluation summaries.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds opt-in fused Gaussian residual and analytic-Jacobian evaluation with CuTile. It propagates the backend and fusion options through xFit and xScan APIs, commands, execution, and benchmarks. Tests, documentation, and GPU CI coverage are also updated.

Changes: CuTile fused Gaussian fitting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fused Gaussian evaluation and API
src/cuphoton/xfit/api.py, src/cuphoton/xfit/_cutile_fused.py, tests/xfit/test_cutile_fused.py, tests/xfit/test_models.py, tests/test_public_api.py
The xFit API accepts CuTile device results and an optional fusion setting. GaussianWorkspace evaluates weighted residuals and analytic Jacobians with a cached cuda.tile kernel. Tests compare fused and unfused results and cover validation, numerical edge cases, and concurrent execution.
xFit command and executor options
src/cuphoton/xfit/commands.py, src/cuphoton/xfit/executor.py, examples/xfit/benchmark_gaussian.py, docs/components/xfit.md, tests/xfit/test_commands.py, tests/xfit/test_executor.py, tests/core/test_cli_contract.py, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The command, executor, and benchmark pass through and record the fusion setting. Fusion is limited to CuTile Gaussian analytic fitting. Documentation describes the option, and GPU CI runs selected CuTile tests and uploads their reports and logs.
xScan backend configuration and evidence
src/cuphoton/xscan/device_pipeline.py, src/cuphoton/xscan/xfit_features.py, src/cuphoton/xscan/pipeline_benchmark/runner.py, tests/xscan/test_device_pipeline.py, tests/xscan/test_pipeline_benchmark*.py, tests/xscan/test_native_pipeline_config.py
xScan configuration and execution support CuTile and optional fusion. Evidence validation checks that the reported backend matches the configured backend. Benchmark metadata and provenance include the backend and CuTile implementation details.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b8c17

The fused cuTile fitting feature is opt-in and defaults are preserved. One GPU pipeline test expects arguments that are no longer passed, so it will fail in GPU CI until the expectation is corrected.

452-472: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Wrap fused-kernel compile and launch failures the same way as the unfused cuTile path.

gaussian_normal_equations in src/cuphoton/xfit/_cutile.py catches compile and launch failures. It re-raises them as RuntimeError with a message about the cuda-tile and CUDA runtime versions. The fused _evaluate passes raw ct.launch exceptions through without that wrapping.

FitDipolesCommand._call converts only the exception types in _KNOWN_COMMAND_EXCEPTIONS into a CommandError. A cuda.tile compiler error of another type therefore reaches --fusion users as a traceback, not as the usual short diagnostic. Use the same wrapping so both cuTile paths fail the same way.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Remove default keywords from the mocked fit expectation.

When backend="cupy" and fusion=False, DeviceXFitPipelineConfig.execution_payload() returns {}. The pipeline therefore passes neither keyword to fit. On a usable GPU, this assertion fails during the pipeline test. Remove both keys from the expected dictionary.
