Description

Merging into staging or master currently does not deploy the application. Run browser tests as part of CI and publish/deploy the same commit only after lint, types, unit tests and both builds pass. Keep builds on GitHub runners and use separate branch-restricted environments for staging and production.

Deploy immutable GHCR digests through Coolify. Check the branch head before building and again before image selection; refuse a release already superseded at either check. Reject mismatched applications, runtime version overrides and unapproved schema changes. Retry failed status reads within the deployment deadline, then check public readiness and the exact deployed commit. Verify the compiled instrumentation exports inside the image before publication. Manual image publication remains available without deploying.

Recheck the branch head immediately before selecting the image. Handle malformed health responses within the verification retries and include the last failed gate in the final error. Fork pull requests skip authenticated browser tests because they cannot receive repository secrets; those tests remain mandatory after merging into staging or master. Disable persisted checkout credentials in jobs that install dependencies and run tooling.

Type of change

  • Bug fix

How Has This Been Tested?

  • 31 Python tests covering build configuration and deployment guards.
  • actionlint on all three changed workflows.
  • Full unit suite: 2,153 passed, 4 skipped. TypeScript and focused ESLint pass. Database generation used the approved disposable local database; standard push hooks remain enabled.
  • Prettier and git diff --check.
  • Read-only preflight against the current staging and production applications.
  • API calls checked against the installed Coolify 4.5.3 controllers.
  • GitHub CI at 121d0e43: unit, lint/types, build, compiled-hook and browser checks passed; publication/deployment skipped for the PR.
  • Staging release b9c66d2e built, published, deployed and verified through CI run 41231167021.

Screenshots (if applicable)

Not applicable.

Checklist

  • Code follows project conventions.
  • Performed a self-review.
  • Local checks pass.

Notes for reviewers

Coolify integration credentials are installed in the existing GitHub environments. Source auto-deploy remains disabled so the VPS does not build images. The image supplies its own version; obsolete runtime version overrides have been disabled without restarting either running container.

An unknown deployed source version blocks release even when a schema digest is approved; restore its commit identity or fetch the missing history first. Both current environments expose verified commit SHAs. The project database wrapper permits a missing optional .env.local; CI uses the configured runner-local database variables.

GitHub and Coolify do not share an atomic branch lock. A release can finish while a newer commit queues. Releases are serialized and cancellation is disabled so a newer push does not interrupt Coolify verification after a mutation.

The workflow does not apply hosted migrations. Schema or migration-file changes block deployment until a fresh backup, explicit migration approval and verification are complete. Preserve the previous image digest for recovery. DNS, Vercel and subscription settings are unchanged.

Deployed to staging after #511. CI, immutable image publication, Coolify readiness and the exact public commit passed. Production promotion remains separate.

Walkthrough

CI now runs browser checks before staging and master releases, then publishes and deploys an immutable image after required jobs succeed. The changes also update Sentry initialization, add shared tRPC error reporting, preserve diagnostic error causes, and adjust server startup and catalog-fetch behavior.

Changes

Release pipeline

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deployment validation and execution
scripts/container_deploy.py, scripts/container_deploy_test.py
The deployment script validates branch freshness, Coolify configuration, schema approval, and public health. It deploys an immutable image and verifies the resulting release. Tests cover validation, deployment, and failure cases.
CI release workflow
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/container-image.yml, .github/workflows/e2e-tests.yml, tests/auth.spec.ts, tests/error-handling.spec.ts, tests/accessibility.spec.ts
CI runs deployment tests and migrations, checks instrumentation exports, and runs browser tests. The release job calls the container workflow for qualifying staging and master pushes.
Release and migration procedures
docs/container-image.md, docs/SELF_HOSTING.md
The documentation describes branch-specific deployments, Coolify settings, hosted-migration approval, and release-failure procedures.

Sentry initialization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sentry runtime and build configuration
instrumentation.ts, src/instrumentation.ts, sentry.server.config.ts, sentry.edge.config.ts, src/instrumentation-client.ts, next.config.ts, src/instrumentation.test.ts, src/sentry-config.test.ts, src/sentry-build-config.test.ts
Instrumentation initializes server Sentry outside production builds and exports onRequestError. Server, client, and build settings configure environment, release, sampling, and PII options. Tests cover initialization and release selection.

Server error reporting and diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared tRPC error reporting
src/server/api/trpc-errors.ts, src/app/api/trpc/[trpc]/route.ts, src/app/api/mobile/trpc/[trpc]/route.ts, src/server/api/trpc-errors.test.ts, src/server/api/trpc-routes.test.ts
Both tRPC routes use a shared reporting function. It logs errors with HTTP status 500 or higher; tests cover logged and unlogged responses.
Diagnostic error causes
src/lib/errors.ts, src/lib/app-error-cause.ts, src/lib/app-error-cause.test.ts, src/server/repositories/base.repository.ts, src/server/repositories/base.repository.test.ts, src/server/api/routers/admin/titleIdTools.ts, src/server/services/steam-batch-lookup.service.ts
Error helpers accept causes. Repository and service error paths wrap underlying errors in diagnostic errors before logging and returning them. Serializable app errors require an allowed error code.
Server startup and catalog fetches
src/server/init.ts, src/server/init.test.ts, src/server/catalog-startup.test.ts, src/server/utils/switchGameSearch.ts, src/server/utils/switchGameSearch.test.ts, src/server/utils/threeDsGameSearch.ts, src/server/utils/threeDsGameSearch.test.ts
Startup waits for notification initialization, then starts game-service initialization without awaiting completion. Catalog loaders share in-flight fetches and reuse cached Fuse instances.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description gives a clear summary of the goal (browser tests in CI, publish and deploy the same commit to staging or master through Coolify, branch-restricted environments), and it fills in the Type of change section with Bug fix. The How Has This Been Tested section lists concrete checks, including Python tests, actionlint, unit suite results, and CI results at a specific commit. Remaining gaps: the template's 'Fixes # (issue)' line is left as a placeholder with no linked issue, the checklist items for documentation updates and lint or typecheck are ticked as passing while the staging deployment is unchecked, and the Notes section states a dependency on PR #511. The description also cites commit 121d0e4 while the objectives cite a0efe4b, a mismatch the author should reconcile. Overall the description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 27 functions across 31 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Preserve causes for unhandled Prisma errors.

Known Prisma errors other than the three mapped codes bypass the new diagnostic wrapper. For example, a P2022 missing-column error becomes a generic database error without its code or cause. (prisma.io)

Wrap and log the original error before passing the wrapper to databaseError. Do not pass the Prisma error directly: its code and metadata could be serialized to clients.

Based on learnings: “When catching an exception and throwing a new one, chain the original as the cause.”

Make branch freshness atomic with the Coolify update.

A newer push can arrive after verify_branch_head() and before the separate Coolify update and deploy requests. The reusable workflow's serialization delays the newer run but does not stop the current run from deploying its old digest. Keep push runs cancellable as a mitigation, but use an atomic branch-head claim or lock for the correctness guarantee. A second non-atomic freshness check is not sufficient.
