This adds integration with the ProxySQL enterprise plugin for AWS.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for configuring AWS RDS Proxy alongside native ProxySQL settings, including proxy authentication, targets, connection pools, and tags.
    • Added workload identity and bootstrap configuration options for AWS-enabled clusters, with TLS-secured web access enabled automatically when needed.
    • Added per-replica status showing observed configuration version, convergence, and drift.
    • Updated reference documentation with the new configuration options and reconciliation behavior.

Upgrade Go from 1.25.7 to 1.27.2 to remediate CVE-2026-78667, CVE-2026-78669, and CVE-2026-97031 in the standard library.

Upgrade golang.org/x/net from v0.56.0 to v0.60.0 for CVE-2026-78669 and google.golang.org/grpc from v1.83.1 to v1.83.2 for CVE-2026-84445. Refresh the required golang.org/x transitive dependencies.
Upgrade golangci-lint from v2.11.4 to v2.14.0 for Go 1.27 support while retaining the existing policy for optional struct-literal modernization.

Handle response-body closure, reduce reconciler and defaulting complexity, replace manual map copies, simplify the fixed admin TLS identity, and consolidate repeated domain constants. Apply Go 1.27 formatting and pointer-construction conventions.
Forward the customer external ID to the plugin bootstrap, normalize the default target group, document the required VPC, and make finalizer retries diagnosable without blocking on an absent credential Secret.
Use one package constant for the RDS default target group so the operator passes the configured goconst lint rule.
feat: Add RDS-compatible configuration delivery
Mount the SaaS-owned bootstrap ConfigMap unchanged, preserve internal SigV4 credentials, project typed RDS desired state through the plugin API, and exclude plugin-owned runtime tables from native reconciliation.
Move RDS desired-state translation and drift comparison under the AWS plugin package so the file layout reflects its ownership.
feat: Finalize RDS proxy configuration delivery contract

📝 Walkthrough

The operator adds AWS plugin configuration to existing ProxySQL resources. It provisions bootstrap and credential inputs, uses a signed RDS API client, and reconciles native and RDS state across ready replicas with combined per-replica and aggregate status.

Changes: AWS RDS Proxy support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resource contracts and workflow
operator/api/v1alpha1/proxysqlcluster_types.go, operator/api/v1alpha1/proxysqlconfig_types.go, docs/reference/*, docs/superpowers/*
The resource specs add ServiceAccount, AWS plugin, DB proxy, and version fields. Config status adds observed version and per-replica results. The references and design documents describe bootstrap and combined reconciliation.
AWS bootstrap and pod wiring
operator/internal/controller/rds_bootstrap.go, operator/internal/controller/proxysqlcluster_controller.go, operator/internal/controller/builders/*, operator/internal/controller/tls_*, operator/Dockerfile, operator/go.mod, operator/Makefile, operator/.custom-gcl.yml, operator/.golangci.yml
Cluster reconciliation resolves the bootstrap ConfigMap, ensures the credentials Secret, and watches bootstrap ConfigMap changes. Builders configure AWS plugin startup, web and TLS settings, and read-only bootstrap and credential mounts. Toolchain and supporting builder updates accompany the implementation.
RDS API client and desired-state conversion
operator/internal/plugin/aws/*, operator/internal/rdsclient/*
The AWS adapter validates and normalizes DB proxy configuration and detects drift. The RDS client signs AWS Query requests and supports state description, application, and clearing.
Combined replica reconciliation
operator/internal/controller/proxysqlconfig_controller.go, operator/internal/controller/rds_reconcile.go, operator/internal/controller/pod_discovery.go, operator/internal/proxysqlclient/*, operator/internal/controller/restart_checksum.go
The config reconciler observes native and RDS state, applies changes to drifted replicas, verifies both domains, and reports per-replica and aggregate convergence. Native runtime comparison and sync omit MySQL rows managed by the AWS plugin.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 4abea

With AWS plugin support enabled, a cluster with more than one ProxySQLConfig can repeatedly wipe the plugin's MySQL servers and users, and a DB proxy that omits idle client timeout is cleared and reapplied (dropping targets) every few seconds. These can disrupt database traffic and should be fixed before merge; smaller issues around connection reuse, custom web ports, TLS settings, and documentation also remain.

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 4abea

The new plugin lifecycle can overwrite authentication and backend state belonging to another configuration targeting the same cluster. Bootstrap also accepts pre-existing signing credentials without checking their ownership. HTTPS verification limits network impersonation, but does not address these ownership risks.

Retained concerns

  • High · reliability · observed: Plugin ownership is configuration-local although the affected runtime is cluster-wide. A native-only sibling configuration selects full native synchronization and can replace plugin-managed users and backends. Deletion also applies the remaining native union through full Sync; deleting a plugin configuration additionally clears shared RDS authentication and targets without restoring remaining plugin intent. The plugin-aware path protects these tables only when the current configuration declares plugin state. This breaks ownership and authentication-state preservation even under sequential reconciliation.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new signing authority accepts complete credentials from an existing predictable cluster credential Secret without verifying controller ownership. A principal able to create that Secret before AWS bootstrap can select credentials subsequently mounted into the plugin. If the principal can reach the listener and the plugin accepts those credentials as intended, this provides authenticated access to plugin configuration operations without reading an operator-generated Secret. Normal creation uses random, controller-owned credentials, but that protection does not cover the existing-Secret branch. Deployment admission restrictions and the plugin's effective authorization remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated state-ownership failure affects the selected cluster's ready replicas and their authentication and backend configuration. Configuration lookup is namespace-local. A Secret-precreation actor could repeat the conditional credential attack for multiple prospective clusters in that namespace. Wider AWS resource or cross-account exposure depends on workload IAM permissions and plugin authorization that are not established here.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A legitimate native-only sibling reconcile can choose non-plugin ownership mode and rewrite tables holding plugin-projected users and backends. This is a security-control state-preservation failure, not evidence that authentication becomes universally bypassable or that the configuration author gains previously unavailable administrative authority.
  • inferred — The conditional credential path is namespace Secret creation, followed by bootstrap adoption of attacker-selected keys, followed by signed requests to the reachable plugin listener. The API client demonstrates operations modifying proxy authentication and TLS requirements, targets, and tags. Actual plugin authorization and deployment restrictions bound whether this becomes an exploitable path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Normal bootstrap generates random local signing credentials and assigns cluster ownership to the newly created Secret. Those controls coexist with an existing-Secret branch that checks credential completeness but not provenance. Transport authentication protects the operator-to-pod boundary; it does not establish authorization of configuration authors or the selected workload identity.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Per-replica convergence is published only after native and plugin verification passes. Finalization retries plugin cleanup failures. These controls avoid claiming successful convergence after detected failure, but do not preserve sibling ownership or restore state already cleared before interruption.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define plugin ownership at cluster scope for both reconciliation and finalization, with deterministic composition or explicit conflict rejection. Require a deliberate provenance policy for existing signing Secrets. Establish an authenticated credential-rotation and recovery contract with the plugin, including interruption after mutable authentication state is cleared.

Review comments at @docs/reference/proxysqlcluster.md:
- Around line 76-92: Add a requirement beneath the
`plugin.aws.bootstrap.configMapRef` field descriptions stating that the
referenced ConfigMap must include the `proxysql.com/aws-region` annotation, and
give a concrete region example such as `us-east-1`. Note that the operator uses
this annotation for internal RDS API SigV4 signing.

Review comments at
@docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-12-rds-proxy-api-compat-s2-operator-design.md:
- Around line 22-91: Revise the approved design’s RDS configuration, bootstrap,
and ownership contracts to match the implemented API: use
`spec.plugin.aws.bootstrap.configMapRef` with the region from the ConfigMap
annotation, typed `spec.plugin.aws.dbProxy`, the agent’s mounted ConfigMap with
`command: proxysql` and no `--aws-managed-bootstrap` flag, and
`NativeRuntimeWithAWSDBProxy` ownership of the complete MySQL server and user
categories. Alternatively, mark the design superseded and link to the reference
docs.

Review comments at @operator/internal/controller/builders/builders.go:
- Around line 502-504: Update the TLS enforcement logic to preserve existing
settings: initialize spec.TLS only when nil, then set Enabled to true without
replacing a populated TLSSpec.

Review comments at @operator/internal/controller/proxysqlconfig_controller.go:
- Around line 202-211: Update the reconciliation ownership decision near
`buildRDSReconcileState` to derive AWS DB proxy mode from the cluster-wide
configuration union, not only the current `ProxySQLConfig`; ensure a config
without `dbProxy` cannot trigger a native full-table sync that overwrites
AWS-owned tables. Reject or degrade when multiple configs for the cluster
declare `dbProxy`, since they contend for the same proxy. Apply the same
cluster-wide ownership flag in `finalize`’s cleanup sync through
`applyToReplicas` and `Sync`.

Review comments at @operator/internal/controller/rds_bootstrap.go:
- Around line 105-112: Move the desired RDS credentials Secret construction from
ensureRDSCredentials into a pure builder method in builders, including its name,
labels, type, credential data keys, and credential-file encoding; have
ensureRDSCredentials call the builder while retaining random generation and
Get/Create/Update handling. Keep the generated credential-file key aligned with
AWSCredentialsFileName.

Review comments at @operator/internal/controller/rds_reconcile.go:
- Line 77: Update rdsReconcileState and buildRDSReconcileState to store the
cluster’s defaulted web port from
builders.DefaultedSpec(cluster).Protocols.Web.Port, then use that state.webPort
in the rdsclient.New URL instead of builders.DefaultWebPort.

Review comments at @operator/internal/controller/tls_dial.go:
- Around line 72-78: Update adminTLS.httpClient so its short-lived client does
not leave reusable idle connections behind: disable keep-alives on the
http.Transport it creates. Keep the existing TLS configuration and client
timeout unchanged.

Review comments at @operator/internal/plugin/aws/config.go:
- Around line 98-115: Update FromSpec so an omitted or zero IdleClientTimeout
uses AWS’s 1800-second default when constructing Desired.Proxy; preserve
explicitly configured timeout values so Drift does not report false proxy drift.
