[Deep Agent 16/16] location-analyst subagent: Hebrew extraction → conditional geometry → spatial usage plan (#65) - #66
Conversation
…itional geometry, spatial usage plan (#65) Three separately testable stages behind a new `location-analyst` subagent: 1. extract_locations: deterministic Hebrew extraction/normalisation over a seed gazetteer (prefix chains, acronyms, variants, aliases, directional/operational modifiers, team/venue/ person-name exclusions) plus validated model hints for unknown places. 2. resolve_location: gateway get_geocode_address when registered (args from its live schema), else in-repo Nominatim; polygon_geojson="1" only when an area/line is needed; type filtering, ambiguity reporting, real geometry types, validation/repair, bounded simplification, no bbox fallback; per-thread geo_registry + process cache. 3. LocationPlan structured output finalised by LocationPlanMiddleware: evidence checks against tool results, metre-accurate buffers, deterministic predicate_sql with '@..._wkt@' geometry placeholders that execute_trino_query / validate_sql_syntax / answer verification substitute. Places are routed to location-analyst (system prompt, value-resolver, spatial-analyst skill); resolve_location_to_wkt is no longer offered to the agents. …zetteer (#65) Stage 1 is now an LLM judgement, not a rule-based procedure: extract_locations calls a dedicated extractor model with the `location-extractor` prompt (the extraction guidelines and the spec examples, Langfuse-managed as deep-agent/location-extractor). The model lists every candidate span with its decision, then the normalised entities. Code no longer decides what is a place. It only validates the model's output: mentions must occur in the query (hallucinations are dropped with a reason), english_name is snake_case, entity_type is known, duplicates are merged, and malformed output gets one corrective retry. - remove the seed gazetteer and deterministic matcher - extract_locations is built per agent build, bound to the subagent model; optional `note` lets the analyst ask for a second pass - unit tests cover the pipeline with scripted model output; the nine spec examples plus generalisation cases run against a real LLM with GEO_LIVE_LLM=1 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…parate extractor LLM call (#65) The location-analyst subagent is already a reasoning LLM call the main agent delegates to, so a second model call inside a tool only added latency and duplicated reasoning. Extraction is now the subagent's own stage 1: - the extraction guidelines and the nine spec examples live in the location-analyst prompt - LocationPlan carries `locations` and `excluded` (stage 1) before `usages` (stage 3) - LocationPlanMiddleware validates stage 1 against the delegated question (mentions must occur in it, snake_case names, known types, no duplicates) and marks usages that don't refer to a surviving location as unresolved - removed the extract_locations tool and the location-extractor prompt - the live eval runs the real location-analyst subagent (GEO_LIVE_LLM=1) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Add the feature identity to the center-buffer placeholder.
The token for the center buffer is built only from english_name (or "loc"), _center and the distance. Example: kafr_kanna_center_buf2000m_wkt. The token does not include feature_ref. Two different features with the same English name produce the same token. Features with no English name also share a token. This applies to features in one plan and to features across plans in the same thread. Line 217 avoids this because geom["token"] already contains the provider id.
Failure path:
- A usage asks for a center distance against a
wktorgeometrytarget. - A second feature with the same English name and the same distance is buffered. Kafr Kanna in the Galilee and Kafr Kanna in Lebanon are a real example from the regression set.
self.new_geometries[token]is overwritten.merge_geo_registryalso replaces existing keys.- The predicate that the parent already holds now resolves to the other feature's buffer. The query returns wrong rows and reports no error.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not cache transient geocoder failures for the life of the thread.
Every error result is stored in geo_registry["lookups"], including GEOCODER_UNAVAILABLE, which comes from a timeout or a 503. The registry is graph state. With DEEP_AGENT_CHECKPOINT_DB_URL set, the registry is stored durably per thread. After one short Nominatim or gateway outage, every later identical resolve_location call in that conversation returns the cached failure, and the provider is not called again. This also applies to later turns, after the provider has recovered. The user cannot get that place resolved in the thread.
Cache stable outcomes such as LOCATION_NOT_FOUND, LOCATION_AMBIGUOUS and MALFORMED_GEOMETRY. For GEOCODER_UNAVAILABLE, skip the cache or limit it to the current turn. test_tool_caches_failures_instead_of_retrying uses a timeout, so update it to use a stable error category.

| Finish with `LocationPlan`, filled in order: `locations` and `excluded` (stage 1), then `usages`. Give one usage per place and operation, with `canonical_hebrew` exactly as in `locations`. Give `table` and column names exactly as the tools returned them, and stored `category_values` verbatim. Spatial usages also need `feature_ref` and `distance_m` with `distance_source: user`. Add short `evidence` and `assumptions`. Do not write geometry, WKT or SQL yourself: the plan is checked against the question and your tool results, and `predicate_sql` is rendered for the analyst. Usages combine with AND. Use OR only when `combination_note` explains why the data needs it (e.g. some rows have only coordinates, others only a city). |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not require distance_m on every spatial usage.
Line 70 says that spatial usages need feature_ref and distance_m with distance_source: user. This conflicts with the prompt's own rules:
within_areaandintersects_areado not use a distance.- Line 61 says that proximity words without a number must leave
distance_mempty. In that case the plan reports the usage as ambiguous or applies a configured default.
A model that follows line 70 can invent a radius to fill the field. _Finalizer._distance then accepts that radius as user-given and returns a ready predicate with a distance the user never gave. Limit the requirement to within_distance, and only when the user stated a distance.
Proposed wording

Adds a
location-analystsubagent that owns every place in a question. It works in three stages that are tested separately:location-analystprompt,LocationPlan.locations/.excluded,geo/extract.pylocationsand the rejected look-alikes, with reasons, inexcluded. Code only validates this output: eachoriginal_mentionmust occur in the delegated question (a hallucinated one is dropped, with the reason recorded),english_namemust be snake_case,entity_typemust be a known type, and duplicates are merged. Every usage must refer to a surviving location. Questions with no places finish immediately, with no tool calls.geo/resolve.py,geo/geometry.py, toolresolve_locationget_geocode_addresswhen the gateway lists it, building arguments from its live schema; otherwise the in-repo Nominatim client. Sendspolygon_geojson="1"only for area or line needs. Filters candidates by entity type and reports distant, similarly ranked candidates asLOCATION_AMBIGUOUS; the caller picks one byprovider_id. Keeps the real geometry type (a point is never reported as an area) and the provider's center and bbox separately. Repairs invalid geometry with a note, and simplifies only as much as needed with the tolerance recorded (≤100 m), never falling back to a bbox. Results are deduplicated per thread (geo_registryin graph state, which also caches failures) and per process (LRU).geo/models.py,geo/plan.py,LocationPlanMiddlewareLocationPlan:category_match,within_area,intersects_area,within_distance(reference:center,area,boundary_line,lineorpoint) ordirectional. The middleware then checks it against evidence: columns and stored values must appear in tool results,feature_refmust exist, and the geometry type must fit the operation. It setsstatusandissuesand renderspredicate_sqlitself.
