# BLOCKERS.md -- 10-Day Challenge

Discrepancies between the handoff document and current platform state.
Mars sign-off required on each item before the affected day proceeds.

---

## B-1: Module Path Convention (affects every day)

**Handoff says:** `oraculus/api/`, `oraculus/retrieval/`, `oraculus/agents/`, etc.

**Actual structure:** `src/oraculus_di_auditor/` is the single source package.
New challenge modules are placed there with equivalent subdirectories:

| Handoff path | Actual path |
|---|---|
| `oraculus/api/reasoning_mode.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/interface/reasoning_mode.py` |
| `oraculus/retrieval/hybrid.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/retrieval/hybrid.py` |
| `oraculus/retrieval/colbert_index.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/retrieval/colbert_index.py` |
| `oraculus/agents/raia_v0.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/agents/raia_v0.py` |
| `oraculus/tools/detector_tools.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/tools/detector_tools.py` |
| `oraculus/memory/three_tier.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/memory/three_tier.py` |
| `oraculus/eval/harness.py` | `src/oraculus_di_auditor/eval/harness.py` |

All other paths in the handoff that reference `oraculus/` follow the same mapping.
This convention is already applied to Day 1. **No Mars sign-off needed -- convention is resolved.**

---

## B-2: Platform Corpus Stats (informational)

**Handoff says:** 212,838 findings / 65,108 documents / 17 jurisdictions

**Actual (CLAUDE.md, 2026-10-22):** 271,245 findings / 81,309 documents / 16 jurisdictions

The handoff was written before the City of Fresno NSU ingest (14,409 docs / 64,489 findings)
and TCPD harvest (1,262 docs) completed. The eval harness in Day 10 will use the current figures.
Day 1 query generation should reflect current corpus scale.

**No Mars sign-off needed -- informational update only.**

---

## B-3: odia-v2 Training State (affects Day 1 and Day 10)

**Handoff says:** "odia-v2 QLoRA fine-tune (6,672 examples across Types 1 through 6) now
trained and in validation."

**Actual:** odia-v2 training completed 2026-10-22. 327,717 examples
(56,282 reports + 271,221 finding explanations + 214 adversarial DAN Type 8).
Q4_K_M GGUF deployed in Ollama. Validation conducted via RAG pipeline testing
2026-10-22. Known gap: synthesis QA pairs absent from training data (odia-v3 target).

**Impact:** Day 1 "reasoning mode on vs. off" comparison runs against deployed odia-v2,
not a model in validation. Day 10 evaluation baseline reflects actual deployed model.

**No Mars sign-off needed -- informational update only.**

---

## B-4: Day 1 Gold Reference Answers (blocks Day 1 evaluation)

**Handoff requires:** `data/eval/reasoning_mode_queries.jsonl` -- 20 queries with
Mars-authored gold reference answers covering CPRA, signature patterns, JAG, Carpenter,
cross-jurisdictional, and open analytical questions.

**Current state:** File infrastructure created. Query slots defined. Reference answers
are blank. Day 1 build (reasoning_mode.py scaffold) is complete. Evaluation run against
20 queries is blocked until Mars populates reference answers.

**Mars action required:** Fill in `reference_answer` fields in
`data/eval/reasoning_mode_queries.jsonl` before running
`scripts/eval_reasoning_mode_day01.py`.

---

## B-5: Day 3 Retrieval Decision Checkpoint (blocks Day 4)

**Handoff requires:** Mars sign-off on production retriever selection after Day 3
three-way benchmark before Day 4 wires it into the R.A.I.A. agent.

**Current state (2026-10-23):** Day 3 complete. Three-way benchmark ran:
TF-IDF/BM25 vs Hybrid (BGE-M3+BM25+reranker) vs ColBERTv2 (direct MaxSim).

Watch 1 confirmed: ragatouille 0.0.9 fails Python 3.14 (voyager.voyager_ext C-ext missing).
Replaced with direct ColBERT MaxSim via transformers. 24/24 tests pass including 6 integration
tests using the actual colbertv2.0 weights.

Decision document: `learning_log/day03_retrieval_decision.md`.
Benchmark results: `data/eval/retrieval_benchmark_day03.json`.
Visualization: `data/eval/retrieval_benchmark_day03.png`.

**Mars action required:** Review decision document and sign off before Day 4 starts.
Options: Case A (ColBERT as production), Case B (Ensemble), Case C (Hybrid as production).

---

## B-6: Day 5 Document AI Decision Checkpoint (blocks downstream pipeline change)

**RESOLVED 2026-10-31 -- Session A + Session B both complete.**

Session A (end of Day 5):
- CP1: pymupdf exclusively for all corpus extraction. SIGNED OFF.
- CP2: Day 11 Vast.ai plan (ColPali + Nougat, RTX 4090, ~2h). SIGNED OFF.
- CP3: marker-pdf gap accepted for TCPD corpus; ColPali supersedes at Day 11. SIGNED OFF.
- CP4: TCPD PrimeGov substitution accepted; 1,080 docs in DB. SIGNED OFF.

Session B (start of Day 6):
- CP5: L-11 Healthcare District -- deferred Phase 6, stub only. SIGNED OFF.
- CP6: L-12 Civic Ritual -- deferred indefinitely, patterns absorb into L-2. SIGNED OFF.
- CP7: L-13 Scenographic Compilation -- absorb into L-10 as compilation_mode. SIGNED OFF.

**No further Mars action required on B-6.**

---

## B-7: Day 7 Detector Tool-Calling Pattern Checkpoint (blocks Day 9)

**Handoff requires:** Mars sign-off on detector selection pattern after Day 7 before
Day 9 memory wiring.

**Current state (2026-10-31):** Day 7 COMPLETE. `src/oraculus_di_auditor/tools/detector_tools.py` built.

Pattern implemented:
- 10 `@tool(description=...)`-decorated wrapper functions (L-1 through L-10), each accepting
`doc_context_json: str` (JSON-encoded DocContext fields) and returning `findings_json: str`
(JSON array of anomaly dicts via `LegalFinding.to_anomaly_dict()`).
- `DETECTOR_TOOLS` list for LangGraph ToolNode registration.
- `DetectorRegistry` class for batch runs (holds singleton instances of all 10 detectors).
- `legal_scan_node(state: dict, resolver=None) -> dict` -- LangGraph node that reads
`state["retrieved_passages"]`, runs all 10 detectors per passage, and writes
`state["legal_findings"]` (list of anomaly dicts). Graph wiring deferred to Day 9.
- `_NullResolver` sentinel: detectors receive this when no LegalResolver is initialized at
tool-call time and fall back to static analysis.
- `build_doc_context_from_passage(passage: dict) -> DocContext` utility for RAIA passage dicts.

Smoke test results (2026-10-31):
- Import: PASS (10 tools registered, correct names)
- DetectorRegistry.run_all on ALPR/surveillance agenda doc: 3 findings (L-1, L-8, L-10 -- correct triggers)
- legal_scan_node: PASS (3 findings, trace entry correct)
- @tool.invoke JSON path: PASS (L-1 result count 1)

**SIGNED OFF 2026-10-31 (Mars / SynTechRev).**

Architectural decisions accepted:
1. _NullResolver pattern: accepted for Day 9 and production; detectors run static-analysis mode
without resolver at tool-call time.
2. Graph wiring between cross_reference and deepen: accepted as the default position. Day 9
will evaluate alternatives (post-deepen verify, conditional per-cycle) before hard-wiring.
3. RAIAState TypedDict: legal_findings added dynamically is acceptable for LangGraph
(StateGraph tolerates extra keys). Day 9 may extend TypedDict if type safety becomes
a friction point.

Day 9 architectural items to resolve (surfaced from B-7 review):
- Detector invocation strategy: all-ten-per-passage vs. selective based on passage characteristics
- Finding reconciliation when detector verdict and agent reasoning diverge -- does verify node
consume legal_findings automatically, flag for operator, or require agent reflection?

**No further Mars action required on B-7. Day 9 proceeds after Day 8 completes.**

---

## B-8: WSL2 Assumption (affects scripts)

**Handoff assumes:** WSL2 Ubuntu 22.04 for bash scripts and model downloads.

**Actual:** Primary dev environment is Windows 11, PowerShell primary, Git Bash available.
The `scripts/verify_no_dashes.sh` script runs via Git Bash (bash scripts/verify_no_dashes.sh).
Python environment uses `.venv\Scripts\` not `.venv/bin/`.
All scripts will be written with Windows compatibility unless explicitly a Vast.ai task.

**No Mars sign-off needed -- convention resolved.**

---

## B-9: `data/eval/` 100-Query Eval Set (affects Day 2 benchmark and Day 10 harness)

**Handoff requires:** 100-query held-out eval set with known-relevant document IDs
for retrieval benchmark (Days 2, 3) and evaluation harness (Day 10).

**RESOLVED (2026-10-23):** `data/eval/retrieval_queries_v1.jsonl` written with 100 queries
across 5 categories (instrument_type, dollar_range, severity_critical, gap_pattern, combined).
Known-relevant doc IDs derived from detector output in `data/eval/fresno_signature_1k.jsonl`
(1000 docs from layer_signature.json, sorted by document_id ascending).

Note for Day 10: the eval set is lexically biased (derived from detector patterns).
Day 10 harness will need semantic/adversarial queries added for a complete evaluation.

---

## B-10: `data/contra_training_v1.jsonl` Reference

**RESOLVED 2026-10-31 -- Option B selected.**

Operator confirmed: use Day 4 RAIA traces to generate DPO preference pairs.
- chosen: run 3 responses (data/eval/raia_day04_traces.jsonl, verify_passed queries)
- rejected: synthetic vacuous baselines reproduced from pre-7e5b840 prompt behavior
- Target: 50-200 pairs for smoke test

data/contra_training_v1.jsonl is not needed. Actual SFT corpus
(data/training/odia_v2_combined_327717.jsonl) is not used as DPO baseline.

**No further Mars action required on B-10.**

---

## B-11: Python 3.14 Incompatibility Pattern (4 packages)

Documented across Days 2 and 3. Four packages fail on Python 3.14 C-extensions:

| Package | Blocker | Day | Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| FlagEmbedding | pandas/datasets C-ext | 2 | sentence_transformers |
| nano-graphrag | gensim __NUMPY_SETUP__ | 8 | networkx + pyvis |
| Letta / MemGPT | C-ext incompatibility | 9 | native SQLite three-tier |
| marker-pdf | pillow<11 no 3.14 wheel | 5 | pymupdf + pdfplumber |
| ragatouille | voyager.voyager_ext | 3 | direct transformers MaxSim |

No Mars sign-off needed -- pattern is documented and handled per day.

---

## B-12: Day 10 Evaluation Baseline -- Mars Review Checkpoint

**Status (2026-10-31):** Day 10 COMPLETE. Baseline scorecard generated.

**Scorecard summary (Day 4 traces, 5 queries, HeuristicJudge):**

| Metric | Value | Threshold | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| verify_pass_rate | 0.8000 | 0.7500 | OK |
| citation_density_mean | 0.8000 | 0.7500 | OK |
| citation_precision_mean | 0.8000 | 0.8000 | OK |
| iteration_efficiency | **0.3333** | 0.4000 | **FAIL** |
| answer_adequacy | 0.6800 | 0.5000 | OK |
| category_balance | 0.8000 | 0.6000 | OK |
| latency_p50_ok | 1.0000 | 0.0000 | info |

**Overall verdict: FAIL (iteration_efficiency)**

**Why expected:** Day 4 traces used odia-v2 (base QLoRA, no DPO). Mean 2.0 iterations
per query on a 3-iteration cap. DPO training (Day 6) targets exactly this gap: preference
pairs penalize traces that arrive at verify with unfilled citations. After odia-v3 training
at Day 11, iteration_efficiency is expected to meet the 0.40 gate.

**SIGNED OFF 2026-10-31 -- M. Sanchez (SynTechRev)**

1. Day 10 result accepted as pre-DPO development baseline. CONFIRMED.
2. Threshold 0.40 stands; post-DPO 100-query eval set determines production fitness. CONFIRMED.
3. Day 11 consolidation PR authorized contingent on post-DPO harness PASS. CONFIRMED.

Operator note: iteration_efficiency FAIL is the honest architectural signal that the
severity_critical gap predicted. The agent is doing architecturally correct work (iterating
on bad output) but convergence requires model-level capability the base model lacks. DPO
is the correct fix; the Day 10 scorecard is the pre-DPO reference point.

**No further Mars action required on B-12. Day 11 proceeds.**

---

---

## B-13: HybridRetriever Index Not Built

**Status (2026-11-01):** Open -- deferred.

**Issue:** The HybridRetriever (BGE-M3 dense + BM25 sparse) was built on Day 2 but its
index was never populated from the full 81,309-document corpus. The severity_critical gate
(Day 11) ran via a `_TFIDFRetrieverShim` wrapping the production TF-IDF index instead.

**Impact:** RAIA runs against TF-IDF retrieval quality, not BGE-M3 semantic retrieval.
TF-IDF is sufficient for citation gate purposes but misses semantic neighborhood matches
that BGE-M3 would surface.

**Path to resolution:** Run `scripts/build_hybrid_index.py` (to be written) on the
local machine with BGE-M3 loaded. 81K docs at ~5 ms/doc CPU = ~7 hours. One-time job.
Output: `data/vectors/hybrid/dense_matrix.npy` + `bm25.pkl` + `doc_ids.json`.

**No Mars sign-off required. Consolidation PR proceeds without hybrid index.**

---

## B-14: Post-DPO iteration_efficiency Not Yet Measured

**Status (2026-11-01):** Open -- deferred.

**Issue:** The Day 11 eval harness re-run used Day 4 pre-DPO traces. iteration_efficiency
remained 0.333 because traces are static. DPO improvement can only be measured against
traces generated by odia-v3 on the same query set.

**Path to resolution:** Run RAIA with odia-v3 on the 5 Day 4 queries + 3 gate queries.
Save to `data/eval/raia_day11_traces.jsonl`. Re-run harness:
`python -I scripts/run_eval_harness.py --traces data/eval/raia_day11_traces.jsonl`
Expected: iteration_efficiency >= 0.40 (sc-01 reached verify_passed in < 3 iterations).

**No Mars sign-off required. Consolidation PR proceeds with harness FAIL documented.**
