feat(ai-ui-message-stream): bridge TanStack AI and the AI SDK UI message stream - #1893
Port an app from the Vercel AI SDK to TanStack AI one side at a time. This is a stop gap while porting, not a long-term integration. The new @tanstack/ai-ui-message-stream package serves AI SDK useChat (and AI Elements) from chat(), either on the route or in the browser, and lets TanStack useChat call an AI SDK streamText route. Text, reasoning, tools, tool approvals, activity, subagents and stream resume cross in both directions.
🎯 Changes
New package @tanstack/ai-ui-message-stream. It converts between AG-UI events and the AI SDK v7 UI message stream, and between the two message history shapes.
Client: fromChatTransport(transport, { threadId, tools }) wraps any AI SDK ChatTransport, so fetch, SSE and request options stay in AI SDK code.
Browser bridge: toChatTransport(fetchServerSentEvents(url)) is an AI SDK ChatTransport for a plain TanStack chat() route. The route has no AI SDK code. Approval answers resume the paused run through the same code as chatParamsFromAISDKRequest.
Mappings:
A tool approval becomes tool-approval-request on one side and a bound tool-approval interrupt on the other.
Activity and subagents become AI SDK data parts that update in place by id.
Shared state goes from a TanStack server to an AI SDK client only, because the AI SDK client does not send state.
The reasoning signature round-trips.
Provider data round-trips: Gemini thoughtSignature and OpenAI item ids on tool calls, provider-executed tools (web search) and their sources, step boundaries, and model, response ids and usage in message metadata.
AG-UI event order is kept: TOOL_CALL_END waits for an approval or output of the same call, so no metadata event follows it.
Client tools go to the route in the request body. clientToolsFromAISDKBody(body, serverTools) reads them there, so the route needs no copy. WebMCP page tools work too.
With outputSchema, an Output.object answer is a typed structured-output part with partial objects.
A dropped stream reconnects with TanStack's backoff, set with the reconnect option. @tanstack/ai-client exports createReconnectTracker for this and is now a required peer.
Tests show that client persistence, the message queue, devtools and loading saved AI SDK chats work over the bridge.
Docs: two new migration guides (ai-sdk-client-tanstack-server, tanstack-client-ai-sdk-server) and a compatibility reference (ai-sdk-compatibility) that lists, per feature, event and message part, what crosses as is, what is mapped or grouped, and what is dropped. Each page says the bridge is a stop gap. All are linked from "From Vercel AI SDK". The tanstack-ai-migration skill is updated.
Error handling (from the review of this stack):
An error that chat() throws now reaches AI SDK useChat as an error chunk. Before, the response broke and the client saw a network error.
If a stream ends before finish, error or abort, the client reconnects. If the route cannot resume (4xx or 204), the stream closes with what it has.
If a reconnect gets a 4xx, the drop fails at once with the original error. Before, it retried up to the limit and hid both errors.
The start chunk has no message id. Before, a client-tool continuation made AI SDK useChat add a second assistant message.
Tool arguments that are not valid JSON send tool-input-error. An approval answer with no run id is a 400. Data part activity ids are data-<name>:<id>, so two data types with the same id do not collide.
Docs fixes: the approval sample declares bookFlight on the route. Both guides install @tanstack/ai-client. The resume, subagent and stop() claims match the code.
Changeset:minor for the new package.
The converters started from the Cloudflare Agents fork (tombeckenham/agents-tom, branch ag-ui-canonical) and were rewritten on @ag-ui/core 1.0 and ai 7 types.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Testing
Commands run
In packages/ai-ui-message-stream: vitest run (67 passed, 7 of them for toChatTransport), test:types, test:oxlint, test:build (publint).
In packages/ai-client: test:types, test:oxlint.
knip on the package, pnpm test:sherif, pnpm test:docs, and kiira check on the new and changed docs (all snippets pass).
pnpm nx run @tanstack/ai-e2e:test:types.
E2E: the 5 new /ai-sdk-client-bridge specs pass locally.
Not run locally: pnpm test:pr and the full E2E suite. CI runs them.
Manual test
Run pnpm build:all, then pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e dev. The app is on port 3010. No API keys are necessary.
Open /ai-sdk-client (AI SDK useChat on a chat() route). Click each scenario link. The page shows the expected result next to each link. For example:
[error] and [crash] show the server error.
[bad-args] shows tool-input-error.
[client-tool] shows one assistant message.
Delete a.txt, then Approve or Deny, shows the approval round trip.
Open /ai-sdk-server (TanStack useChat on an AI SDK streamText route). Click each scenario link. For example:
[ai-sdk-error] and [ai-sdk-drop] show the error fast, with no reconnect limit.
[ai-sdk-early-end] shows one reconnect.
[ai-sdk-data-two] shows two activities.
Open /ai-sdk-client-bridge (AI SDK useChat with toChatTransport on a plain chat() route). Click each scenario link: server tool, approve or deny, client tool, and error.
Open /ai-sdk-resume and reload while the reply streams. The full text shows, with one assistant message.
How this PR makes testing easy
Unit tests in packages/ai-ui-message-stream/tests/ run each direction through the real ai reader, real chat() with fakeText, and a real ChatClient.
E2E: testing/e2e/tests/ui-message-stream.spec.ts has 31 tests, one for each scenario link on the pages. They use fakes only, and they pass with --repeat-each=2.
Risk / rollback
The package is new, and no existing package imports it. Revert the PR to remove it. The resume-after-reload E2E test depends on timing and is the most likely to be flaky.
Public API change
Before: AI SDK useChat cannot read a chat() route.
After
// Server: AI SDK useChat, TanStack chat()constparams=awaitchatParamsFromAISDKRequest(request)conststream=chat({adapter: openaiText('gpt-6.1-sol'), ...params})returncreateUIMessageStreamResponse({stream: toUIMessageStream(stream)})// Browser bridge: AI SDK useChat, plain TanStack chat() routeuseChat({transport: toChatTransport(fetchServerSentEvents('/api/chat'))})// Client: TanStack useChat, AI SDK routeuseChat({
threadId,
tools,
outputSchema,connection: fromChatTransport(newDefaultChatTransport({api: '/api/chat'}),{
threadId,
tools,
outputSchema,}),})// AI SDK route: read the client's toolsstreamText({ model, messages,tools: clientToolsFromAISDKBody(body,{ getWeather })})
@tanstack/ai-client also exports createReconnectTracker. This package also exports the types FromChatTransportOptions, AISDKToolCallMetadata and AISDKApprovalFields.

No coverage on the base commit, so nothing to compare against: ai-ui-message-stream.
…age stream
Add @tanstack/ai-ui-message-stream. Serve AI SDK useChat from chat() with
chatParamsFromAISDKRequest and toUIMessageStream, or point TanStack useChat
at an AI SDK route with fromChatTransport. Text, reasoning, tools, client
tools, tool approvals, activity, subagents and stream resume cross the
bridge. Shared state goes from a TanStack server to an AI SDK client.
Adds unit tests against the real ai and @tanstack/ai-client code, E2E
scenarios, two migration docs pages, and the migration skill update.
…idge as a stop gap
Add a reference page that lists, per feature, event and message part, what
crosses the bridge as is, what is mapped or grouped, and what is dropped.
Say on every page that the bridge is a stop gap while porting.
…r-executed tools
An audit of both wires found data the bridge dropped that providers need:
- Tool-call provider metadata (Gemini thoughtSignature, OpenAI item ids)
now round-trips through callProviderMetadata in both directions.
- Provider-executed tools (web search) keep their flag, so neither client
runs them, and their sources become source-url chunks.
- Steps map to start-step / STEP_* events, and the history sent to an AI
SDK route gets step-start parts, so a tool loop keeps its order.
- Model, response ids and usage go into message metadata, and come back
for OpenAI Responses replay.
- The approval signature, descriptor and automatic approvals are kept.
- System messages are no longer sent to an AI SDK route, and a finished
structured output goes back as text.
TOOL_CALL_END now waits for an approval or output of the same call, so
late metadata never follows TOOL_CALL_END. The compatibility table is
rewritten from the new mappings and aligned.
…nect for AI SDK routes
TanStack useChat gets more from an AI SDK route:
- fromChatTransport sends the client's tool declarations in the request
body. clientToolsFromAISDKBody(body, serverTools) turns them into AI SDK
tools without execute on the route, so client and WebMCP tools need no
copy there. Server tools win a name clash.
- With outputSchema, an Output.object answer becomes a typed
structured-output part with partial objects and a checked final value.
- A dropped stream reconnects with createReconnectTracker, the backoff of
the TanStack HTTP connections, set with the reconnect option.
@tanstack/ai-client now exports createReconnectTracker.
Tests prove client persistence, the message queue, devtools and loading
saved AI SDK chats over the bridge.
… the AI SDK message id
TanStack server, AI SDK client:
- A thrown chat() error becomes an `error` chunk, so `useChat` shows the
real message, not a network error.
- `start` has no message id. The AI SDK client keeps its own, so a
continuation after a client tool no longer adds a second assistant
message.
- Tool arguments that are not JSON become `tool-input-error`, so the
client does not run the call with no input.
- `toResumableUIMessageStreamResponse` logs a failed run.
AI SDK server, TanStack client:
- A stream that ends before its terminal chunk reconnects. When the route
cannot resume (204 or a 4xx), a clean end closes and a drop fails with
its own error, not the reconnect limit.
- A data part's activity id is `data-<name>:<id>`, so two data types with
the same id no longer replace each other.
- An approval answer with no `metadata.tanstack.runId` is a 400, not a
resume of the chat id.
Types: finish-reason maps typed from TanStackRunMetadata, AISDKChatParams
picks from TextOptions, FromChatTransportOptions, AISDKToolCallMetadata
and AISDKApprovalFields are exported, and isRecord/parseJson have one copy.
Tests cover RUN_ERROR both ways, thrown server tools, cancel, abort, AI SDK
tool errors, early ends, the continuation message id and the 400.
…d stale claims
- The TanStack client guide declares `bookFlight` on the route with
`needsApproval`, so the approval sample works. Resume after a reload
needs the AI SDK resume GET. `SavedChat` is now the `useSavedChat` hook.
- Both guides install `@tanstack/ai-client`, a peer that the package
loads at runtime.
- The server guide says a `chat()` error reaches `useChat`, a disconnect
stops a plain run, and an approval answer needs the paused run id.
- The compatibility table covers the dropped `RUN_STARTED`, a thrown
`chat()` error, broken tool arguments, base64 data URLs, the run id on
approval answers, early stream ends and the `data-<name>:<id>` activity id.
- The changeset, README and migration skill say subagents go one way.
- The README API table lists `chatParamsFromAISDKRequestBody` and the
`fromUIMessageStream` options. The `toAISDKMessages` JSDoc matches the code.
…ts and reconnects
Each AI SDK bridge page lists clickable scenarios, picked by ?prompt=, with
fakes only: fakeText and hand-written AG-UI events on the chat() route, the
AI SDK mock model and hand-written UI message chunks on the streamText route.
The spec has one test per scenario (26).
Document the production authorization requirement.
This is a minimal example, so the missing checks do not warrant a major issue. Add a note that production POST and GET routes must authenticate the request and authorize chatId before creating, selecting, or replaying a run.

## Route Handlers
Route Handlers allow you to create custom request handlers for a given route using the Web Request and Response APIs.
Image: Route.js Special File
> Good to know: Route Handlers are only available inside the `app` directory. They are the equivalent of API Routes inside the `pages` directory meaning you do not need to use API Routes and Route Handlers together.
### Convention
Route Handlers are defined in a `route.js|ts` file inside the `app` directory:
app/api/route.ts
TypeScript
[Select]
`export async function GET(request: Request) {}`
Route Handlers can be nested anywhere inside the `app` directory, similar to `page.js` and `layout.js`. But there cannot be a `route.js` file at the same route segment level as `page.js`.
### Supported HTTP Methods
The following HTTP methods are supported: `GET`, `POST`, `PUT`, `PATCH`, `DELETE`, `HEAD`, and `OPTIONS`. If an unsupported method is called, Next.js will return a `405 Method Not Allowed` response.
### Extended `NextRequest` and `NextResponse` APIs
In addition to supporting the native Request and Response APIs, Next.js extends them with `NextRequest` and `NextResponse` to provide convenient helpers for advanced use cases.
### Caching
Route Handlers are not cached by default. You can, however, opt into caching for `GET` methods. Other supported HTTP methods are not cached. To cache a `GET` method, use a route config option such as `export const dynamic = 'force-static'` in your Route Handler file.
app/items/route.ts
TypeScript
[Select]
`export const dynamic = 'force-static'
export async function GET() {
const res = await fetch('https://data.mongodb-api.com/...', {
headers: {
'Content-Type': 'application/json',
'API-Key': process.env.DATA_API_KEY,
},
})
const data = await res.json()
return Response.json({ data })
}`
> Good to know: Other supported HTTP methods are not cached, even if they are placed alongside a `GET` method that is cached, in the same file.
#### With Cache Components
When Cache Components is enabled, `GET` Route Handlers follow the same model as normal UI routes in your application. They run at request time by default, can be prerendered when they don't access dynamic or runtime data, and you can use `use cache` to include dynamic data in the static response.
Static example - doesn't access dynamic or runtime data, so it will be prerendered at build time:
app/api/project-info/route.ts
`export async function GET() {
return Response.json({
projectName: 'Next.js',
})
}`
Dynamic example - accesses non-deterministic operations. During the build, prerendering stops when `Math.random()` is called, deferring to request-time rendering:
app/api/random-number/route.ts

# Error Handling
Last updated March 25, 2026
Errors can be divided into two categories: expected errors and uncaught exceptions. This page will walk you through how you can handle these errors in your Next.js application.
## Handling expected errors
Expected errors are those that can occur during the normal operation of the application, such as those from server-side form validation or failed requests. These errors should be handled explicitly and returned to the client.
### Server Functions
You can use the `useActionState` hook to handle expected errors in Server Functions.
## Handling uncaught exceptions
Uncaught exceptions are unexpected errors that indicate bugs or issues that should not occur during the normal flow of your application. These should be handled by throwing errors, which will then be caught by error boundaries.
### Nested error boundaries
Next.js uses error boundaries to handle uncaught exceptions. Error boundaries catch errors in their child components and display a fallback UI instead of the component tree that crashed.
Create an error boundary by adding an `error.js` file inside a route segment and exporting a React component:
app/dashboard/error.tsx
TypeScript
[Select]
`'use client' // Error boundaries must be Client Components
import { useEffect } from 'react'
export default function ErrorPage({
error,
unstable_retry,
}: {
error: Error & { digest?: string }
unstable_retry: () => void
}) {
useEffect(() => {
// Log the error to an error reporting service
console.error(error)
return (
<div>
<h2>{props.title}</h2>
<p>{error.message}</p>
<button onClick={() => unstable_retry()}>Try again</button>
</div>
)
}
export default catchError(ErrorFallback)`
Then use the returned component as a wrapper in any layout or page:
app/some-component.tsx
TypeScript
[Select]
`import ErrorBoundary from './custom-error-boundary'
export default function Component({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
return <ErrorBoundary title="Dashboard Error">{children}</ErrorBoundary>
}`
Error boundaries don't catch errors inside event handlers. They're designed to catch errors during rendering to show a fallback UI instead of crashing the whole app.
In general, errors in event handlers or async code aren’t handled by error boundaries because they run after rendering.
To handle these cases, catch the error manually and store it using `useState` or `useReducer`, then update the UI to inform the user.

Return the parser’s 400 Response from each Next.js Route Handler.
These examples use the Next.js Route Handler form. chatParamsFromAISDKRequest(request) can throw a status-400 Response, but Next.js does not convert a thrown Response into the HTTP response. Catch and return it, while rethrowing other errors.

After a fresh install with this command, the server example cannot resolve @tanstack/ai-openai, and the client example cannot resolve @tanstack/ai-react. Add both packages to the command, or give separate install commands for the two examples. The server migration guide also lists the provider package as an installation requirement. Match approval answers to their paused run.
If an earlier assistant message contains an answered approval and a later assistant message has a different tanstack.runId, this scan sends the earlier answer with the later run as parentRunId. The resume request then targets the wrong paused run. Select answers from the assistant message being resumed, and derive parentRunId from that same message. The current conversion leaves answered calls pending in the message history. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

packages/ai-ui-message-stream/tests/run each direction through the realaireader, realchat()withfakeText, and a realChatClient.testing/e2e/tests/ui-message-stream.spec.tshas 31 tests, one for each scenario link on the pages. They use fakes only, and they pass with--repeat-each=2.Risk / rollback
The package is new, and no existing package imports it. Revert the PR to remove it. The resume-after-reload E2E test depends on timing and is the most likely to be flaky.
