fix(ai-react): replace the client a hidden <Activity> disposed when it shows again - #1899
A useChat view that React's <Activity> hides for more than a tick came back with a disposed client. A reply in progress stopped on screen, and the thread did not load again. Now useChat replaces the client at the moment the deferred teardown disposes it, so the view never renders a disposed client. The new client starts from the messages on screen, loads the thread, and joins the run.
🎯 Changes
useChat (packages/ai-react/src/use-chat.ts): when the deferred teardown disposes the client while the hook stays mounted and holds no newer client, it bumps a client revision. On a new threadId the new client is already active, and the teardown leaves it. useMemo then makes a new ChatClient, which the view renders when it shows again. The effects that run on show read the new client: isHydrating is true and the state is live, never that of the disposed client.
The new client starts from the messages of the disposed client, but only for the same threadId. A view that shows on another thread starts from initialMessages.
Strict Mode and a normal unmount do not change. The setup cancels the teardown within the tick, so the revision does not change. After a real unmount, the state update is dropped.
Docs: a "Hidden views" section in docs/api/ai-react.md.
E2E: tests/use-chat-hidden-view.spec.ts, with the provider-free harness /use-chat-hidden-view and /api/use-chat-hidden-view.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. A React app keeps a useChat view mounted but hidden, for example in <Activity mode="hidden">. If the view is hidden for more than a tick, it comes back with a dead client. A reply in progress stops on screen. The thread does not load again.
Cause. A hidden <Activity> runs the effect cleanups and keeps the state and the memos of the hook. The cleanup in useChat schedules stop() and dispose() one tick later. The setup cancels that timer only when it runs within the tick, as in Strict Mode. A hidden view runs the setup later, so the client is disposed. When the view shows, attach() on the disposed client returns early.
Fix. When the teardown disposes the client, useChat bumps the client revision, so the next render makes a new client. The new client attaches, loads the thread, and joins the run, as on a mount.
Possible alternatives
Do not dispose in the effect cleanup. A hidden view would keep its client. A real unmount would then keep the live subscription and the devtools bridge of every chat.
Make dispose() reversible in ChatClient. This changes ai-client and the contract of dispose() for every framework. React is the only binding with <Activity>.
Start the new client without the old messages. The view shows nothing until the thread loads. A client without server persistence loses its transcript.
pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e: 693 passed, 4 skipped, 2 failed. The new spec passed. The two failures do not touch useChat, and each one passed on a rerun:
harness-protocol-inputs (elicitation) also fails from time to time on clean main.
openrouter-web-tools-wire failed once in 3 runs.
The new spec with --repeat-each=20 --workers=4: 20 passed.
Repro on clean main and on this branch

Run curl -X POST 'http://localhost:3010/api/use-chat-hidden-view?action=finish&threadId=use-chat-hidden-view'. The reply stays at its first half.

How this PR makes testing easy
packages/ai-react/tests/use-chat.test.ts, inside a hidden <Activity>:
the run rejoins;
after an idle hide, the new client loads the thread again and the transcript stays;
another thread starts empty;
the view shows again with the new client, never the disposed one: an effect that runs on show reads isHydrating: true. This test fails if the revision is bumped in the setup instead of in the teardown.
a new thread keeps its client: the old thread's teardown disposes only the old client, and the new thread loads once.
On main, the first two fail. Without the revision, the carried messages, or the threadId check, one of these tests fails.
testing/e2e/tests/use-chat-hidden-view.spec.ts: the same story in a browser, on a provider-free route.
Risk / rollback
Low. The new path runs only when a hook instance survives its own deferred teardown, which today leaves a dead view. To undo, revert this PR.
Fixed chat state restoration when a hidden view becomes visible again. While hidden, the chat has no server connection; when shown, messages already displayed are preserved, and chats using persistence can reload their thread and resume an active run. Switching to a different thread shows that thread’s message history instead.
Documentation
Added guidance and an example for hidden chat views, covering message restoration, persistence, and the server support needed to rejoin an active run.

Walkthrough
useChat now recreates a client disposed while its React <Activity> view is hidden. If the thread ID matches, the replacement client uses the disposed client’s messages. Unit and end-to-end tests cover transcript retention, hydration, and active-run resumption.

Summary
Track and recreate disposed clients packages/ai-react/src/use-chat.ts, .changeset/use-chat-hidden-activity.md, docs/api/ai-react.md, docs/config.json
useChat records a disposed client and its thread ID. Client recreation uses the saved messages when the thread ID matches; otherwise it uses initialMessages or an empty list. The changeset declares a patch release. The API documentation describes hidden-view behavior and resumable run requirements, and the documentation entry’s updatedAt changes to 2026-10-24.
Tests cover rejoining an unfinished run, hydrating a new client after disposal, retaining a completed transcript, and changing the thread ID while hidden.

Assert the second run's reply, not only the user message count.
After server.finish(), the mock keeps the first run's log, and tail reads that log from index 0. The second connect appends its own RUN_STARTED and TEXT_MESSAGE_START events to the same array, so the second run replays the first run's events. The final assertion counts only user messages. It passes once the second send adds its user message, whether or not a new assistant reply arrives.
Give the second run its own events. Reset the log in connect so the second run does not replay the first, then assert the assistant text produced by the second send. Do not reuse assistantText, because it returns the first assistant message, which is still 'Hello'.

`useChat` keeps working in a view hidden by React's `<Activity>`. Hiding runs the hook's effect cleanups, and the deferred teardown disposed the client while React kept the hook, so the view came back with a dead client: a reply in flight never resumed and the thread did not load again. When the view shows again, `useChat` now replaces the disposed client with a new one that starts from the messages on screen, loads the thread and rejoins its run.

The hook replaced the client in the effect setup that runs when a hidden
view shows. The effects of that commit still read the snapshot of the
disposed client, so a send from one of them went nowhere. The teardown
now replaces the client, and the hidden view renders the new one before
it shows.

Cancel obsolete disposal timers when a new client is committed.
When threadId changes, the old cleanup schedules a disposal timer. The new client's setup does not cancel it because the stored client differs. The timer then increments clientRevision, replaces the new client, and schedules another disposal. This can continue indefinitely and interrupt the active thread.
Cancel any pending disposal when a new client is committed:
A direct activeClientRef.current === client guard is not sufficient. Hidden <Activity> teardown can clear activeClientRef before the intentional replacement occurs. Add a regression test that changes threadId while visible and waits past deferred disposal.

The teardown replaced the client after disposing it, even on a new threadId,
where the hook already holds the new thread's client. That made the new client
again, whose own teardown made another: the new thread loaded in a loop. The
teardown now replaces the client only when the hook has no newer one.

packages/ai-react/tests/use-chat.test.ts,inside a hidden <Activity>:isHydrating: true. This test fails if the revision is bumped in the setup instead of in the teardown. On
main, the first two fail. Without the revision, the carried messages, or thethreadIdcheck, one of these tests fails.testing/e2e/tests/use-chat-hidden-view.spec.ts: the same story in a browser, on a provider-free route.Risk / rollback
Low. The new path runs only when a hook instance survives its own deferred teardown, which today leaves a dead view. To undo, revert this PR.
