You can now run TanStack AI harnesses inside Render sandboxes. Pass renderSandbox() to defineSandbox, and set RENDER_API_KEY and RENDER_WORKSPACE_ID.
🎯 Changes
Adds @tanstack/ai-sandbox-render, a SandboxProvider backed by @renderinc/sdk.
Files:read, readBytes and write use Render's native file transfer. The other fs calls run one shell command each.
Processes: Render's exec has no kill, cwd, env or stdin. A closed exec stream also leaves the process running (measured). So each command runs in its own process group under a supervising shell, which stops leftover children before it reports the exit. kill() sends TERM, then KILL, to that group from a second command. A kill that arrives before the command starts leaves a marker, and the command exits 143 without running.
Env: Render stores exec command text on the sandbox's exec timeline. So env values, including workspace secrets, never go into a command string. The handle uploads them as one root-only file per sandbox in /dev/tsai, shared by every handle for that sandbox, and each command loads it. /dev is the sandbox's only in-memory filesystem (measured), so secrets never reach the disk. Setting env again replaces the file and removes older ones. A per-call env file is deleted as soon as the command has loaded it.
Snapshots:filesystem by default, runtime with snapshotKind. Filesystem snapshots leave out /dev (measured), so they never contain the env file, even when another process writes it during the capture. A runtime snapshot also captures memory, so the env file is removed for that capture and commands wait until it is back. Runtime snapshots keep the env of processes that are already running. A restore applies env and the network policy again.
Config: pass token and ownerId, or a pre-built client. Passing token or ownerId with a client throws.
Network:policy.capabilities.network: 'deny' sends deny-all, and Render enforces it.
Capabilities:killableProcesses, snapshots, networkPolicy and durableFilesystem are true. ports, writableStdin and fork are false.
Docs: a Render row in the provider tables, a Render section in providers-advanced, and a package README. The changeset is a minor for the new package.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Testing
Commands run:
pnpm test:pr: passed for 114 projects, on the branch rebased onto current main.
pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-sandbox-render test:lib: 58 unit tests pass. They include checks that no env value reaches a command string, that runtime snapshots never see the env file, and that a kill before a slow start stops the command. The handle tests run commands in a local bash that leads its own process group, as Render's exec shell does. So the wrapper and the group kill run for real.
Live suite against real Render sandboxes: 10 tests pass, with no skips. This includes the shared journal conformance kill case behind killableProcesses: true.
Live checks against a real sandbox: /tmp and /dev survive an idle suspend, a filesystem snapshot leaves out /dev while a runtime snapshot keeps it, an upload or command wakes a suspended sandbox in under 1 s, and reading a real .tar file works (only directories download as application/x-tar).
pnpm test:e2e: not run locally. I ran the script body of the new sandbox-render-startup-cancellation.spec.ts against the built package, and it passed.
The live suite needs credentials, so CI shows it as a named skip.
Manual test:
Set RENDER_API_KEY and RENDER_WORKSPACE_ID.
Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-sandbox-render exec vitest run tests/render.test.ts tests/journal.conformance.test.ts.
Expect 10 passing tests. Each test terminates its sandboxes.
How this PR makes testing easy: unit tests with a local bash stand-in for Render's exec, a gated live suite, the shared journal conformance suite, and an E2E check that an aborted create terminates the sandbox.
Risk / rollback
Low. The PR adds a new package, plus doc rows and sections. No existing package changes. To undo, revert the PR.
@renderinc/sdk depends on redis, so the lockfile also moves a few unrelated peer resolutions.
Adds @tanstack/ai-sandbox-render, a SandboxProvider backed by Render
sandboxes through @renderinc/sdk. Every command runs under a wrapper that
records its process group, and kill signals that group from a second exec,
because dropping a Render exec stream leaves the process running.
The handle tests run commands in a local bash that leads its own process
group, as Render's exec shell does, so the wrapper and group kill run for
real. The provider tests cover create cleanup, resume status mapping and
network policy.
Adds Render to the providers table, the constructor list and the
killableProcesses table, a Render section in providers-advanced, and a row
in the ai-sandbox README.
Render stores the exec command text on the sandbox's exec timeline, so the
export prefixes put every workspace secret and per-call token (for example
GIT_ASKPASS_TOKEN) there in plaintext on every command and file call.
env.set now uploads the overlay as a root-only file, per-call env goes in its
own file, and the wrapper sources both. A unit test checks that no env value
reaches a command string.
…-wait
waitUntilRunning throws SandboxNotRunningError when a creating or resuming
sandbox becomes errored or terminated, so ensure() failed instead of
re-creating it.
…ter limit
A label over 59 characters plus the tsai- prefix was rejected by Render. The
name is now truncated; the full label stays in the SnapshotRef.
…pload
With per-call env, exec starts only after the env file uploads. A kill in that
window found no process group within its 2 s wait and returned, then the
command started anyway, orphaned. kill() now marks the command, and a marked
command is not started: it exits 143 and its env file is removed.
A filesystem snapshot captured the env overlay file under /tmp/tsai, so a
restored sandbox kept old secret values after rotation. snapshot() now removes
the file for the capture and writes it back after; a restore gets current
secrets through env.set.
An aborted exec resolves with the killed exit code, so exists() read a cancel
as a missing path. The fs helpers now throw the signal's reason after an
abort, as the sandbox contract requires.
…y, async spawn
- Exporting a bash read-only variable (UID, EUID, PPID, SHELLOPTS, BASHOPTS,
BASH_VERSINFO) fails while sourcing, so the command silently never ran.
Those names are now rejected.
- Once a stream passes the 8 MB exec cap, the rest of it is dropped. Before,
only the overflowing chunk was, leaving a gap mid-output.
- spawn() with an already-aborted signal rejects instead of throwing
synchronously.
…command starts
Fixes from a full review of the env overlay and kill paths:
- The overlay lives at one path per sandbox (/tmp/tsai/env), so a handle made
on resume overwrites the earlier handle's secrets instead of leaving them on
disk, where the next snapshot captured them.
- Overlay writes, snapshots and command starts go through one queue. A command
no longer starts while a snapshot has the overlay removed, and concurrent
env.set calls write one file with every var.
- A failed write-back after a snapshot no longer loses the snapshot ref; the
next command rewrites the overlay first.
- snapshot() always removes the overlay through an exec first, which also
wakes a suspended sandbox (Render only snapshots a running one).
- env.set checks names before merging, so a rejected call leaves the overlay
usable.
- kill() leaves a .killed marker before looking for the process group, and the
wrapper exits 143 without running if it finds one, so a kill that beats a
slow start still stops the command. The group id is written atomically.
- The wrapper deletes a command's per-call env file once sourced, so a
long-running process does not keep it on disk for snapshots.

The snapshot test now deletes the tsai-live-test snapshot it creates, and
destroys the restored sandbox even when the restore fails partway. The resume
test terminates its sandbox in a finally block, so a failed assertion no
longer leaves a billed sandbox running.
Delete the snapshot independently of restored sandbox cleanup.
When restored.destroy() rejects, control exits before sandboxes.snapshots.delete(...). The snapshot can remain after the credentialed test fails. Run snapshot deletion in a nested finally.

Snapshot capture can persist another process's workspace secrets.
snapshot() removes the shared env file, waits for snapshots.create, and restores the file in finally. The handle queue serializes these operations only within one process. A command started through another process's handle calls writeEnv(state) before exec, and that write recreates the shared env file. If the write lands after the rm -f and before Render captures the filesystem, the snapshot can contain that file and its secrets. The removal exists to keep these values out of the snapshot.
The withSandboxafter-run lifecycle calls handle.snapshot() from onFinish, outside the sandbox-key lock. That lock is released before the returned handle is used, and no inspected framework lock covers command starts in other processes. Unless the caller holds its own distributed lock across the run, nothing excludes this overlap.
Correct this with a single sandbox-level lock that covers the snapshot's remove-capture-restore sequence and the command startup write and exec. A lock around only the snapshot call is insufficient. The process-local queue in handle.ts cannot provide this exclusion across processes.

Add a shared sandbox-level lock that works across processes and covers the full

Render sandboxes mount /dev as devtmpfs, their only in-memory filesystem.
Measured live: filesystem snapshots leave it out, files there survive an
idle suspend, and uploads land 0600 root.
The env overlay and per-call env files now live in /dev/tsai, so secrets
never reach the disk and a filesystem snapshot cannot capture them, even
when another orchestrator process writes the overlay during capture. A
filesystem snapshot no longer removes and restores the overlay; it keeps
one command before capture to wake a suspended sandbox and remove on-disk
overlays from earlier versions. Runtime snapshots capture memory, so they
keep the remove-capture-restore step.
Unit tests point the env dir at a temp directory, since /dev is not
writable locally. The remove-capture-restore cases now run against
runtime snapshots; new cases check that a filesystem capture leaves the
overlay in place, wakes the sandbox first, and still removes on-disk
overlays.
On the two outside-diff findings from the last CodeRabbit review:
Snapshot capture can persist another process's secrets (handle.ts): fixed in 421c380 by moving the env files rather than adding a lock. Render sandboxes mount /dev as devtmpfs, their only in-memory filesystem. Measured live: filesystem snapshots leave it out, files there survive an idle suspend, and uploads land 0600 root. The env overlay and per-call env files now live in /dev/tsai, so a filesystem snapshot (the default) cannot contain them, whichever process writes them, and there is no remove-capture-restore step left to race. A runtime snapshot captures memory, so it keeps that step, and the docs now say to serialize runtime snapshots and secret updates with your lifecycle lock when several processes share a sandbox. 6d946ad checks live that a sandbox restored from a filesystem snapshot has no trace of the overlay.
Build the sandbox dependency for test:lib (package.json): left as is to match the other ai-sandbox-* packages, which all run plain vitest. pnpm test:pr builds dependencies first through Nx.
The live test built the provider and an SDK client at module scope, and
the Render SDK throws without RENDER_API_KEY, so the file failed to load
in CI's coverage run instead of skipping. Both are now created in
beforeAll inside the gated describe.
The public contract accepts NodeJS.Signals | number, and comparable providers preserve that signal. Render discards it and always sends TERM, followed by KILL.
A caller that requests SIGINT can therefore skip a process's SIGINT handler and receive a different exit status. A caller that requests SIGKILL can receive a two-second TERM grace period instead of immediate termination.
killableProcesses: true does not exempt this behavior. Render advertises process termination as supported.

SpawnHandle.kill(signal) ignored its signal and always sent TERM, then
KILL after 2 s. It now sends the requested signal, falling back to KILL
after 2 s if the group survives, and SIGKILL goes out at once. As in the
Railway provider, signals other than TERM, INT, HUP, QUIT and KILL map to
KILL. An aborted exec or spawn still sends TERM.
The 8 MiB exec cap counted JavaScript string units, so multi-byte output
could exceed it. Each stream now keeps a byte count, as the spawn queue
already did.
A failed lookup after the capture skipped the cleanup that deletes the
snapshot. Reading sandboxGroupId first means a snapshot only exists
once cleanup is guaranteed.

Testing
Commands run:
pnpm test:pr: passed for 114 projects, on the branch rebased onto currentmain.pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-sandbox-render test:lib: 58 unit tests pass. They include checks that no env value reaches a command string, that runtime snapshots never see the env file, and that a kill before a slow start stops the command. The handle tests run commands in a localbashthat leads its own process group, as Render's exec shell does. So the wrapper and the group kill run for real.killableProcesses: true./tmpand/devsurvive an idle suspend, a filesystem snapshot leaves out/devwhile a runtime snapshot keeps it, an upload or command wakes a suspended sandbox in under 1 s, and reading a real.tarfile works (only directories download asapplication/x-tar).pnpm test:e2e: not run locally. I ran the script body of the newsandbox-render-startup-cancellation.spec.tsagainst the built package, and it passed. The live suite needs credentials, so CI shows it as a named skip.
Manual test:

bashstand-in for Render's exec, a gated live suite, the shared journal conformance suite, and an E2E check that an aborted create terminates the sandbox.Risk / rollback
Low. The PR adds a new package, plus doc rows and sections. No existing package changes. To undo, revert the PR.
