phishing_detection: web_traffic feature from the NetAPI Top 1M instead of the dead Alexa endpoint - #1823
Requesting to submit a pull request to the PyVerse repository.
Issue Title
phishing_detection: the web_traffic feature calls the retired data.alexa.com and marks every site as -1
I have provided the issue title.
Info about the Related Issue
check_web_traffic() in Cybersecurity_Tools/phishing_detection/features_extraction.py requests data.alexa.com, which was retired in 2022 and no longer answers, so every URL gets web_traffic = -1 ("no traffic") and the model leans towards the phishing class for legitimate sites. The goal is a working traffic feature on the scale the model was trained with.
check_web_traffic() now asks the free NetAPI Top 1M for the rank of the registered domain (https://netapi.com/api-json/?method=domain-rank&domain=..., no API key, 30 requests a minute per IP) and maps it onto the three values of the training data: 1 = rank up to 100,000, 0 = ranked lower in the Top 1M, -1 = not ranked or no answer. The registered domain comes from tldextract, which the file already imports, so www.example.com and example.com get the same rank. A 10-second timeout and the existing except keep the old failure behaviour (-1). Nothing else in the file changes; the feature order and the model input stay the same.
Disclosure: I run NetAPI.
I have described my changes.
Type of Change
Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
Code style update (formatting, local variables)
Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
This change requires a documentation update
How Has This Been Tested?
Ran the function on https://www.google.com/ (rank 1 -> 1), https://data-flair.training/blogs/python-mini-project-speech-emotion-recognition/ (the example URL of the file, rank 92,324 -> 1), https://www.askpython.com/ (rank 355,268 -> 0), an unranked domain and a bare IP address (-> -1); a request failure still gives -1.
I have described my testing process.

Improvements
Website traffic assessments now use domain rankings: domains ranked 100,000 or better receive a positive assessment, while lower-ranked domains in the Top 1M receive a neutral assessment.
Domains without an available ranking receive an unknown assessment.
Rankings are cached for up to six hours, and eligible temporary rate limits are retried once.
Tenant domains are assessed separately, providing more specific results for sites hosted on shared domains.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 2 included reviews per hour; 1 remain after this review.
Walkthrough
The web traffic feature replaces its Alexa lookup with a NetAPI domain-rank lookup. It caches successful responses, retries an initial HTTP 429 under the specified Retry-After condition, and maps ranks to the existing feature values.
netapi_domain_rank caches successful rank responses and retries an initial HTTP 429 when Retry-After is at most 60 seconds. check_web_traffic queries the registered domain, including private suffixes, and maps missing ranks to -1, ranks up to 100,000 to 1, and other returned ranks to 0.
The reviewed lookup has no established issue that needs to be fixed before merging.

Explanation
Issue #1822 requires replacing the retired Alexa lookup and preserving the training scale. The diff replaces that request with the NetAPI domain-rank lookup, uses the registered domain, applies a 10-second timeout, maps ranks up to 100,000 to 1, lower Top 1M ranks to 0, and maps missing, failed, or non-success responses to -1. The diff keeps the feature name and feature order unchanged. Issue #1822 does not specify an automated test requirement; the reported manual cases cover the stated mappings.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff changes only Cybersecurity_Tools/phishing_detection/features_extraction.py. The cache and bounded 429 retry support reliable use of the replacement NetAPI lookup. Private-suffix domain extraction supports correct registered-domain lookup. No unrelated change is shown.

- Line 264: Update the registered-domain handling around `registered_domain` to
detect private suffixes and avoid using the platform’s domain rank for tenant
hostnames such as `phish.github.io`; preserve the existing ranking behavior for
ordinary public domains.
- Around line 265-269: Update the NetAPI domain-rank lookup around the
requests.get call to cache results by registered_domain and reuse cached ranks
across extractions. Add quota-aware request pacing or lookup behavior so batch
processing respects NetAPI’s per-minute and daily limits instead of turning
rate-limited responses into web_traffic values of -1.

- Line 38: Add time-based expiry to successful entries in _RANK_CACHE so cached
ranks older than the daily ranking-update interval are refreshed during later
extractions. Update both the cache lookup and the assignment for
registered_domain to track and enforce expiration, preserving reuse of unexpired
ranks.
