Before:

  • A depot manifest could chain symlinks (a -> ., then a/l -> ..) so that later file writes landed outside the install root.
  • Decompression and several network reads were bounded only by format ceilings, or not at all. A zip entry was inflated whole into memory, up to the 4 GiB it could claim.
  • A claimed chunk size could make resume allocate up to 4 GiB.
  • GMA extraction failed for addons whose content ends past 64 MiB.
  • A CM request Steam never answered hung the install forever.
  • Legacy Workshop items with an http:// link could not be downloaded at all.

After:

  • No write follows a symlink below the install root, and symlink targets are collapsed lexically.
  • Chunk, manifest and zip decoding are bounded by the declared size. Zip entries go to the sink in 64 KiB pieces.
  • CM directory, WebSocket upgrade and chunked HTTP reads are capped.
  • One TLS config is shared, so CDN reconnects can resume TLS sessions.
  • Chunk hashing and writes no longer run on tokio worker threads.
  • Every CM request fails after 60 seconds without an answer.
  • Legacy Workshop links are fetched over https and must match the item's declared size.
  • A manifest must name the depot that was asked for.

How: one commit per concern.

  • New: SafePath::resolve_without_links, tapline_fs::remove_symlink and tapline_zip::decode_into.
  • PathError::ThroughSymlink is a new variant.

Behaviour changes:

  • An update whose manifest lists files under a symlinked directory now fails instead of writing through the link.
  • http:// URLs are refused; previously they dialled TLS on port 80.

SECURITY.md is corrected. It no longer claims plain-HTTP lancache support, and it states that manifest signatures are not verified. Verifying them needs Valve's signing key, which isn't public. Manifests are only fetched over TLS.

Verified locally:

  • cargo fmt --all --check
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean.
  • cargo test --workspace: 600 passed, 0 failed.

Not verified: live Steam/CDN, and a real legacy Workshop download.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved protection against unsafe paths, malformed token-store entries, oversized downloads, and invalid archive data.
    • Added limits for oversized server responses and WebSocket headers, and rejected URLs containing whitespace or control characters. Selected session operations now time out after 60 seconds.
    • File installation and chunk processing are more resilient to symlinks and I/O errors. Legacy Workshop HTTP links are now upgraded to HTTPS.
  • New Features
    • Added an option to remove a path only when it is a symlink, leaving regular files untouched.
    • Archive entries can now be extracted incrementally, reducing the need to hold entire entries in memory.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified download security checks and TLS requirements.

The manifest controls symlinks, so a chain like `a -> .` then `a/l -> ..`
could send later writes outside the install root. Symlink targets are now
collapsed lexically and no write follows a link below the root. Resume and
validate no longer allocate whatever chunk size the manifest claims, and the
resume hash and chunk write moved onto the blocking pool.

SECURITY.md asks for this; decode was only bounded by the format ceilings

Several network reads had no size limit, a URL with whitespace could inject

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request adds symlink-aware installation paths, size limits for archive and network processing, and streaming ZIP extraction. It also updates session request handling, TLS and WebSocket transport, token-store validation, and Workshop URL handling.

Changes

Symlink-safe installation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Symlink-aware path operations
crates/tapline-fs/src/file.rs, crates/tapline-fs/src/lib.rs, crates/tapline-fs/src/path.rs
The filesystem crate adds symlink removal and path resolution that rejects intermediate symlinks. Symlink targets are collapsed, with tests covering these behaviors.
Installation path integration
crates/tapline/src/session.rs
Workshop and depot paths use no-follow resolution. Installation removes destination symlinks before creating files or directories.

Bounded archive and streamed data processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Archive and chunk validation
crates/tapline-cdn/src/lib.rs, crates/tapline-chunk/src/lib.rs, crates/tapline-gmad/src/lib.rs, crates/tapline-manifest/src/container.rs, crates/tapline/src/validate.rs
Chunk and archive processing adds size and file-length checks. Manifest-container deflate output uses the entry’s declared uncompressed size.
Streaming ZIP extraction
crates/tapline-zip/src/lib.rs, crates/tapline-pipe/src/lib.rs
ZIP decoding emits data through a callback in bounded pieces. Selective extraction writes nonempty decoded pieces to the sink. Tests cover chunked output, oversized output, and truncated streams.
Network response bounds
crates/tapline-rt-tokio/src/directory.rs, crates/tapline-rt-tokio/src/http.rs, crates/tapline-rt-tokio/src/tls.rs, SECURITY.md
Directory, HTTP chunked, and WebSocket upgrade response reads have limits. URL parsing rejects HTTP, whitespace, and control characters. Security reporting guidance describes the documented transport and verification checks.

Session and transport behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session frame waits
crates/tapline-net/src/session.rs
Job and logon waits retain at most 256 unrelated frames and restore retained frames when a matching response arrives.
Timed requests and chunk work
crates/tapline/src/session.rs, crates/tapline-rt-tokio/src/sink.rs
Selected requests use a 60-second timeout. Chunk resume checks, decoding, and writes run on the blocking pool. FileSink adds a blocking write method.
TLS and WebSocket transport
crates/tapline-rt-tokio/src/tls.rs, crates/tapline-rt-tokio/src/ws.rs
TLS configuration is cached and shared. WebSocket frame headers and masked payloads are combined into one buffer and written together.
Workshop URL handling
crates/tapline/src/workshop.rs
Workshop classification converts legacy HTTP URLs to HTTPS and leaves other URL forms unchanged.

Authentication storage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Token-store input and file contents
crates/tapline-auth/src/store.rs
Token-store reads zeroize file contents after parsing or permission-check failure. Writes reject tab, newline, or carriage-return characters in either field.
Authentication discovery and comparison notes
crates/tapline-auth/src/local.rs, crates/tapline-auth/src/sddl.rs
Comments describe Windows home-directory lookup and distinguish plain SID comparison from alias-aware comparison.

Supporting code updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Comment and unused-code cleanup
crates/tapline-ffi/src/lib.rs, crates/tapline-pics/src/app.rs, crates/tapline/tests/streamed.rs
FFI comments were reworded. The PICS app and streaming test remove unused code and imports.

Extracting a malformed or truncated archive can leave partially written files in the output directory. Stored entries may also write more bytes than the archive declares. Both issues should be fixed before merging.

wait_for_job waits forever, so a server that drops one request while
keeping the connection open hung the whole install. Every request the

read_chunked kept filling its buffer while looking for the end of a
chunk-size line, so a server that never sent one grew it without limit,
and every chunk stayed in the buffer after being copied out. A size line
over 4 KiB is now refused and copied chunks are drained.

An entry was inflated whole into memory, up to the size it claimed, so a
few kilobytes of deflate could make tapline allocate gigabytes. Entries
now go to the sink in 64 KiB pieces and fail as soon as they run past
their declared size.

split_url accepted http:// and then dialled TLS on port 80, so a legacy
Workshop item, whose download link is often http://, could never be
fetched. Those links are now upgraded to https (Steam's UGC hosts serve
both) and any other http:// URL is refused up front.

A legacy Workshop file has no hash, so its length must now equal the
item's declared size. A manifest must name the depot that was asked
for, as it already had to name the manifest id. SECURITY.md now says
what is and isn't verified: no manifest signatures, no plain HTTP.

A stored entry larger than its index claims is now refused for gma as it
already was for zip. When an entry fails to decode, the sink is told to
abort it, and the directory sink removes the file it had started instead
of leaving a truncated one behind. The zip sink no longer reserves an
entry's claimed size up front beyond one batch.
