Review: #6665 (head 9da64ceaf, merge base 8f00c0563)
Issue fit: #6626 and #6627 are Full Suite fingerprint issues. By b9abd4983 the only failures left in this PR's area are show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test and transmit_seam_drop_notice_test. hl2_tci_signaling_test was fixed separately by #6642. The PR does turn both tests green (I reproduced that locally). It does so by changing production code to match test expectations that #6619 (68ccf459f) made stale on purpose. The txwaterfall half of the change makes the bridge report success for a write that was refused and never sent. The right fix is mostly in the tests, and I've included a drop-in version below that passes.
Scope
| File | Change | Claimed? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
src/core/AutomationServer.cpp:3648-3651 |
txwaterfall treats Unsupported as success when hasCommandPlane() |
Yes | Blocker 1: the receipt is false |
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:59-80, :116 |
setupOperationLabel(): the refusal's drop notice names the operation, not just "radio setup" |
Yes | OK. Keep it |
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:141-145 |
lineoutControl alone now admits lineout gain/mute |
Yes | Non-blocking, but it departs from the documented admission contract (item 2) |
Everything in the diff is explained by the stated goal. No CI, build or CHANGELOG files are touched.
Blockers
1. txwaterfall now answers ok for a write that was refused and never sent (src/core/AutomationServer.cpp:3648).
RadioModel::hasCommandPlane() is m_wanConn != nullptr || m_connection != nullptr (src/models/RadioModel.h:635). It says a connection object exists, not that the radio is connected, and not that this request was dispatched. On every Flex or Sim model, Unsupported && hasCommandPlane() is therefore always false. A refused request falls through to {"ok":true,"note":"radio echoes status; ..."}. Meanwhile requestRadioSetup has already refused, emitted commandDropped, and logged Backend refused operation. The bridge and the app now contradict each other.
This also contradicts the contract #6619 documented in docs/architecture/radio-capabilities-map.md:328: "Icom, ANAN, RTL and Sim: absent, no owner declared; setup and bridge requests refuse without sending or storing the value." Agents drive the bridge and treat ok:true as delivery, so a false receipt here is a Principle II problem (the client reporting radio state it does not have).
Evidence:
- Test probe (local, not committed): I added a
commandDroppedcapture to section 4 of the PR's own test at head:PROBE flex: direct dispatch=2 dropped=[transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=1 | ...] bridge={"note":"radio echoes status; re-read with get transmit showTxInWaterfall","ok":true,"txwaterfall":true} PROBE sim: direct dispatch=2 dropped=[transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=1 | ...] bridge={"note":"radio echoes status; re-read with get transmit showTxInWaterfall","ok":true,"txwaterfall":true}2isReceiveDispatch::Unsupported. - Bridge, PR head, connected to the demo (
DEMO-0001,AetherSDR Demo, isolated settings, TX disabled):> txwaterfall on {"note": "radio echoes status; re-read with get transmit showTxInWaterfall", "ok": true, "txwaterfall": true} > get transmit -> "showTxInWaterfall": false log: WRN aether.protocol: Backend refused operation transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=1 (announced) - Same steps on the merge base:
{"error": "TX waterfall setting not dispatched", "ok": false}. Same log line, same model state. Base gives the truthful answer.
The test expectation is what went stale. Before #6619, the verb sent the text fire-and-forget via sendCommand. That is why section 4 of show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test expected "accepted" from a never-connected Flex and from the demo. #6619 moved the verb to typed dispatch with truthful receipts and updated the caps map, but not this test, which isn't in the PR CI subset. The fix is to update the test and drop the AutomationServer.cpp hunk. This replacement for section 4 passes on the merge base with only your setupOperationLabel hunk applied:
// Flex with no live session, and the demo simulator, which declares no
// setup control: nothing is dispatched, so the verb refuses and the model
// carries the drop notice.
for (const QString& family : {QStringLiteral("flex"), QStringLiteral("sim")}) {
const QByteArray tag = family.toLatin1();
const auto named = [&tag](const char* what) -> QByteArray {
return tag + " txwaterfall on: " + what;
};
RadioModel radio;
check(radio.rebuildBackendForTest(family), named("fixture: backend built").constData());
QStringList dropped;
QObject::connect(&radio, &RadioModel::commandDropped, &radio,
[&dropped](const QString& operation) { dropped << operation; });
AutomationServer bridge;
bridge.setRadioModel(&radio);
const QJsonObject on = AutomationServerTestAccess::request(bridge, "txwaterfall on");
check(!on.value(QStringLiteral("ok")).toBool(), named("refused").constData());
check(on.value(QStringLiteral("error")).toString()
== QStringLiteral("TX waterfall setting not dispatched"),
named("the error says nothing was dispatched").constData());
check(dropped == QStringList{QStringLiteral("transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=1")},
named("the model announces the drop").constData());
check(!radio.transmitModel().showTxInWaterfall(),
named("the model is unchanged").constData());
}The dropped assertion depends on your setupOperationLabel hunk, which is a good reason to keep that hunk. The positive Flex dispatch path (transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=) is already covered by radio_setup_control_routing_test.
Non-blocking
- The lineout admission change contradicts the documented contract (
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:141-145). #6619 maderadioSetupControlthe admission record for lineout. ANAN declares both records for this reason (AnanBackend.cpp:438-439), and the caps map says so (radio-capabilities-map.md:74and:327: "ANAN declares gain/mute setup fields"). The PR adds a second admission path throughlineoutControlalone. Today that's harmless: Flex and ANAN, the only families withlineoutControl, also declare the setup fields.IRadioBackend::requestRadioSetup's default (IRadioBackend.h:170) already keys onlineoutControltoo, so this isn't unreasonable. But the stale thing is the test fixture, not production. A two-line fixture change brings the test in line with ANAN's declaration and the map:(f.backend->caps.lineoutControl = RadioCapabilities::LineoutControl{}; f.backend->caps.radioSetupControl = RadioSetupControl{ {RadioSetupField::LineoutGain, RadioSetupField::LineoutMute}};tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp:81). With that change and the label hunk,transmit_seam_drop_notice_testpasses on the merge base without lines 141-145. If you would rather keep the model change, thenradio-capabilities-map.md:74/:327need updating in the same PR to saylineoutControlalone admits. - The PR body's root-cause section misdescribes the behavior. It says
requestRadioSetup"can reportUnsupportedwhen not connected to a live radio command stream" and treats that as the defect. That is the intended answer (#6619, caps map row above). Please reword the body when you rework it. - The title ends in
(#6665). The squash merge appends the PR number again. The commit message's(#6626, #6627)is fine.
What I verified, and what I tried to break
- Reproduced on the merge base
8f00c0563: both tests fail with exactly the CI assertions (declared line output…,absent line output…,flex/sim txwaterfall on: accepted,…radio-echo one). - PR head: both tests pass. So do the neighbors that exercise the touched code:
radio_setup_control_routing_test,desktop_utility_routing_test,anan_backend_test,radiomodel_audio_mute_test,radio_model_client_state_test(5/5). The lineout and label hunks break nothing I could find. - The alternative (your label hunk plus the two test changes above, with no
AutomationServer.cppchange and no lineout bypass) passes 2/2 on the merge base. - Label spam: I checked whether the value-bearing label (
mixer lineout gain 30) could flood the status bar during a slider drag. It can't:MainWindow_Session.cpp:1084shows one notice per session whatever the text, so the label only reaches the log. std::getinsetupOperationLabel: I tried to make it throw on a mismatched variant. It can't:refuse(false)handles invalid requests without computing the label, andvalid()type-checks every field it covers.- Static gates: command-plane ratchet flat at 125/16 files on base and head. EB2 for
AutomationServer.cppunchanged. - Bridge: I drove the PR head and the merge base against the built-in demo (offscreen, isolated
AETHER_SETTINGS_DIR, explicit sockets,AETHER_AUTOMATION_NO_TX=1). Both were confirmed asAetherSDR Demo/DEMO-0001before use and stopped afterwards. No live radio was touched. Lean RelWithDebInfo build with the shared core. Nothing above depends on link mode. - CI: Static checks are green. The build matrix was still running at review time. Runs were created 14:22Z on base
8f00c0563; main has since moved only by a docs commit (69a500779).

Thanks for picking up the last two full-suite failures from #6626/#6627 — the diagnosis in the body is right, and so is the fix it describes. The problem is that the code on the branch is not that fix; it is an earlier, opposite one.
1. Issue fit
Partially — and the body and the diff disagree about how.
The two named failures are correctly identified, and the root-cause analysis is accurate: #6619 (68ccf459f) replaced the fire-and-forget sendCommand in the txwaterfall verb with a typed requestRadioSetup + truthful receipt, and made radioSetupControl the admission record — and both tests still carry pre-#6619 expectations. (The other six failures in those trackers appear to be covered by #6637, #6642 and #6643, already on main; I matched commit subjects to test names but could not run the suite to confirm.)
But the body describes a test-only change ("Updated the test fixture in lineoutRouting()…", "Updated the test expectations to assert truthful refusal (ok: false…)", "without modifying production admission logic"), and the diff contains no test files at all — only two production files, both changed in the direction the body disclaims. Details in Blocker 1 and 2. The approach the body describes is the one I'd recommend; it just isn't what's pushed.
2. Scope
| File | What it changes | Claimed? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp (label) |
New setupOperationLabel(); refuse() announces it instead of "radio setup" |
Yes, body §1 | In scope — but see Blocker 4 (wire text above the seam) |
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp (gate) |
Second admission path: lineoutControl alone admits LineoutGain/LineoutMute |
No — body §2 explicitly says production admission logic is not modified | Blocker 3 |
src/core/AutomationServer.cpp |
txwaterfall reports ok:true on an Unsupported dispatch when hasCommandPlane() |
No — body §3 says the test was changed to expect ok:false |
Blocker 1 |
| (no test files) | — | Body §2 and §3 both claim test edits | Blocker 2 |
No CHANGELOG entry (correct), no new settings keys, no new public/protocol surface, no new or removed socket tests — no socket-test entry to record for this PR.
3. Blockers
1. src/core/AutomationServer.cpp:3648-3649 — the verb now reports success for a request that was never dispatched.
if (dispatch == ReceiveDispatch::Unsupported
&& !s.m_radioModel->hasCommandPlane()) {
return err(QStringLiteral("TX waterfall setting not dispatched"));
}hasCommandPlane() is object existence, not liveness: RadioModel.h:635 is return m_wanConn != nullptr || m_connection != nullptr, and m_connection is harvested at construction for Flex (RadioModel.cpp:932) and for the sim (RadioModel.cpp:961). So the new conjunct is true for any Flex-family or sim backend object, dialled or not, and the guard collapses to "is this a Flex or the demo".
Concrete reachable failure, no test harness involved — connected demo radio: SimBackend declares no radioSetupControl at all (src/core/backends/sim/SimBackend.cpp sets only lineoutControl = std::nullopt), so requestRadioSetup fails the capability gate at RadioModel_Setup.cpp:141-150 and returns refuse() → Unsupported. With this hunk the bridge answers:
{"ok": true, "txwaterfall": true, "note": "radio echoes status; re-read with get transmit showTxInWaterfall"}Nothing was sent, no echo is coming, showTxInWaterfall() stays false — and refuse() has simultaneously fired reportReceiveDispatch(Unsupported, …), so the operator gets a dropped-command notice while the automation client is told it succeeded. The same contradiction is reachable on a real Flex through the liveness paths controlSessionCurrent() guards (m_txSessionClosing, m_expiringPendingCallbacks, a session-generation change, the post-dispatch if (result == Unsupported) return refuse() at RadioModel_Setup.cpp:173).
This also contradicts the capability contract as documented. docs/architecture/radio-capabilities-map.md, the txWaterfallClientFlag row, states for the exact families the test exercises:
Icom, ANAN, RTL and Sim: absent, no owner declared; setup and bridge requests refuse without sending or storing the value
And your own body cites that file for "truthful receipts". The test is the stale artifact here: its flex/sim loop (tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp:338-352) builds a backend with rebuildBackendForTest() and never connects it, then expects ok — which only held because the pre-#6619 verb returned ok:true unconditionally and ignored sendCommand's outcome.
Fix: revert this hunk and change the test loop to the expectation your body already describes — !ok, the "TX waterfall setting not dispatched" error, !showTxInWaterfall(), and a commandDropped("transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=1") notice.
2. The PR body does not describe this diff.
list_pr_files returns exactly two entries, both under src/. Body §2 claims an edit to tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp and asserts the change is made "without modifying production admission logic"; body §3 claims an edit to tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp changing expectations to ok: false. Neither file is in the diff, and the production changes that are in it move in the opposite direction on both counts. Not treating this as deception — most likely a body written from a later plan that wasn't pushed, or a stale push — but it has to be reconciled before a maintainer can act: either push the branch the body describes, or rewrite the body to describe this one.
While you're there: Fixes #6626 / Fixes #6627 will close two trackers whose fingerprints cover 7 and 8 failing tests. If the other six are genuinely fixed on main, that's fine; if any still fail, the tracker re-fires under a new fingerprint and the closed issue reads as fixed-but-not. Refs is the safer verb on a multi-cause full-suite tracker.
3. src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:141-142 — the lineout admission bypass is dead in production and duplicates the authority #6619 established.
const bool isLineout = (request.field == Field::LineoutGain || request.field == Field::LineoutMute);
const bool lineoutSupported = isLineout && caps.lineoutControl.has_value();ANAN is the only shipping backend that declares lineoutControl, and it already declares the setup fields alongside it — src/core/backends/anan/AnanBackend.cpp:438-439:
c.lineoutControl = RadioCapabilities::LineoutControl{};
c.radioSetupControl = RadioSetupControl{{RadioSetupField::LineoutGain, RadioSetupField::LineoutMute}};radio-capabilities-map.md documents exactly that ("ANAN declares gain/mute setup fields and applies its native setLineoutGain / setLineoutMute verbs"). So no real radio reaches the new branch. The only thing that does is the fixture at tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp:79, which declares lineoutControl alone — and tests/desktop_utility_routing_test.cpp:338-339, a #6619-era fixture, already shows the post-#6619 shape with both records set. Widening production admission so a stale fixture passes leaves two authorities for one decision.
Fix: revert this hunk and do body §2 as written — add caps.radioSetupControl = RadioSetupControl{{RadioSetupField::LineoutGain, RadioSetupField::LineoutMute}}; to the lineoutRouting() fixture.
4. src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:59-78 — setupOperationLabel() puts raw Flex wire text above the seam.
All six literals are verbatim copies of src/core/backends/flex/FlexSetupControls.cpp:109-113 and :89. AGENTS.md:50-52 is explicit for a PR touching RadioModel:
your change must not add to any item that review lists (family-string branches, raw Flex wire text above the seam,
dynamic_castto a concrete backend, a capability without a verb, …)
Two consequences beyond the rule. It is a second copy of the Flex spelling that will drift from the encoder, and it is applied to every family: on a connected Icom or HL2, moving the master volume now raises an operator notice reading mixer lineout gain 30 — a Flex command that radio never speaks. Before this PR it read radio setup, which was unhelpful but not wrong about the hardware.
The label change itself is needed (transmit_seam_drop_notice_test:88-93 asserts these exact strings, and they do match the Flex encoder — I checked all six). The cleaner shape is a backend-supplied label, or a family-neutral one ("line out mute", "line out gain") with the test updated to match. That's a judgment call about which the maintainer and #5554 should settle, so I'm not proposing a patch.
4. Nits
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:75— thedefault:arm silently labels ~25 other fields"radio setup". An explicitcaselist (or// every other field keeps the generic labelplus-Wswitchcoverage) would make the next added field fail loudly rather than quietly inherit the generic text. Non-blocking.- The PR title on GitHub ("align waterfall and drop-notice test expectations") describes the body's plan, not the diff. It'll need to match whichever branch lands.
5. What I tried to break, and could not
std::getinsetupOperationLabel()throwing.refuse(false)— the only call reached with!request.valid()(RadioModel_Setup.cpp:119) — does not announce, so the label only runs on validated requests, andRadioSetupRequest::valid()(src/core/backends/RadioSetupRequest.h:67-90) pins the variant alternative for each of the six labelled fields. Nobad_variant_accesspath; safe in a no-exceptions codebase.- The HL2 / client-owner path regressing.
lineoutSupportedis false there (HL2 declares nolineoutControl), so the gate is byte-equivalent; andclientPersistsShowTxInWaterfall()still short-circuitstxwaterfalltoLocalOnlyatRadioModel_Setup.cpp:126-131before the relaxed bridge guard, so section 4's HL2 case is untouched by either hunk. - Label/wire drift. All six labels match
FlexSetupControls.cpp:89,109-113exactly, including theint(bool)→0/1rendering the test expects. - CodeGuard's 106 findings. security-audit (CodeGuard) confirmed every family as a pre-existing lexical false positive; the only one touching a changed line is CS-VLN-CMDI-AMP at
AutomationServer.cpp:3649, which is the C++&&in the newifcondition. The file contains no command-execution sink (QProcess/system/exec*/popen), so nothing from this verb can reach a shell. The SSRF/PII hits are loopback TCI-simulator addresses, comments, and synthetic GPS fixture coordinates in untouched code. Nothing security-relevant attributable to this PR. - Green CI as evidence. It isn't, here: all 5 checks pass, but neither
show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_testnortransmit_seam_drop_notice_testis on the frozen per-PR gate (#5405) — both run infull-suiteonly. The checks that would exercise this change did not run.
I am headless: no build, no test run, no GUI. Everything above is reasoned from the code in the PR head checkout, not reproduced at runtime.
6. Recommendation
Request changes. Blocker 2 has to be resolved first — the body and the diff describe mutually exclusive changes, and the body's version is the correct one. The AutomationServer.cpp hunk reverses a truthfulness guard #6619 added deliberately and makes the bridge report success for a request a connected demo radio never dispatched, which is worse than the failing test it silences; the lineout bypass widens production admission for a fixture that should be updated instead. Concretely: drop both production hunks, keep the label change (subject to the seam question in Blocker 4), and land the two test-side updates your body already spells out — that fixes both failures without a production behaviour change at all.

1. Issue fit
Yes. Both #6626 and #6627 are full-suite fingerprints listing 7–8 failures, and the PR body's claim that these are "the two remaining" holds up — I mapped every other named failure to a commit already on main in 68ccf459f..a88540e9b: hl2_tci_signaling_test → 74a3c0f33 (#6642), auto_agc_threshold_gui_test → b9abd4983 (the 251-vs-248 rx.width() compare), and control_receive_test / rtl_capture_worker_test / rtl_capture_worker_slow_device_test / radio_setup_operations_test → 10c1e3bc5 (#6637, RTL native receive + the TX band RCA column, which is the bandDialogUsesTypedRequestsAndNormalizesNumbers compare at line 265). So Fixes #6626 / Fixes #6627 is a fair claim rather than an auto-close on a still-red issue. That mapping is by commit message and subject, not by a suite run — I cannot execute ctest.
The root-cause story in the body also checks out. 3c81b3d81 ("migrate Radio Setup, TX Band and USB controls to typed requests") is the breaking commit: it replaced sendCmd("mixer lineout gain %1") (RadioModel.cpp:11971/11989 at 3c81b3d81^) with the typed route and a single generic QStringLiteral("radio setup") notice label. The assertions in transmit_seam_drop_notice_test that expect "mixer lineout mute 1" / "mixer lineout gain 30" predate that commit, so setupOperationLabel restores notice text that previously existed — it is not a label invented to satisfy a test.
2. Scope
| File | What it changes | Claimed in body? | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp |
Adds setupOperationLabel(); refuse() passes it instead of "radio setup" |
Yes (§1) | In scope |
tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp |
Declares radioSetupControl on the lineoutRouting() fixture |
Yes (§2) | In scope |
tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp |
Flips the flex/sim arm from accepted to refused; adds a commandDropped observer |
Yes (§3) | In scope |
Everything in the diff is explained by the issues. No build/CI/vendored churn, no new public surface (setupOperationLabel is in an anonymous namespace), no CHANGELOG.md entry, no removed guard or early return. The one deleted comment that named a behavior ("the verb sends the wire text and answers as it does on a Flex") is discussed under Nits — the behavior it described was legitimately retired by #6619, not regressed by this PR.
3. Blockers
None.
The change I expected to be a blocker is not one, and I want to record the check because it is the one that matters. The fixture change at tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp:82-83 puts two capability records in front of one operation: RadioModel::requestRadioSetup admits on caps.radioSetupControl->supports(field) (src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:141-143), and only then does IRadioBackend::requestRadioSetup's default route lineout to the seam on capabilities().lineoutControl (src/core/backends/IRadioBackend.h:170). A production backend declaring lineoutControl but not radioSetupControl would therefore have every lineout edit refused at the model — and would also burn the once-per-connect-session unsupported-control notice latched by m_commandDroppedNoticeShown. The old single-record fixture was the only thing that would have caught that mismatch. It does not exist:
lineoutControlengaged:flex/FlexBackend.cpp:731,anan/AnanBackend.cpp:438. Both also declare the setup record — ANAN explicitly covering{LineoutGain, LineoutMute}atAnanBackend.cpp:439, Flex inserting every field atFlexBackend.cpp:694-697.lineoutControl = std::nullopt: HL2, Icom, RTL, Sim.
So no backend is in the gap, and the body's "without modifying production admission logic" is accurate.
4. Nits (all non-blocking)
-
tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp:334-336— the new comment names a cause that is not the operative one.// Flex with no live session, and the demo simulator, which declares no // setup control: nothing is dispatched, so the verb refuses and the model // carries the drop notice.
Both arms actually stop at the session gate (
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:134-141,!m_backend || !controlSessionCurrent(session)), before capabilities are consulted at all.rebuildBackendForTest()never opens a link, andisConnected()(RadioModel.cpp:2813-2826) falls through tom_backend->isConnected()— false forFlexBackend(FlexBackend.cpp:846-849, needsm_connection) and false forSimBackend(m_connected{false}atSimBackend.h:156, set true only fromRadioConnection::connected). Two consequences: Flex is not refused for want of a setup control (it declares all 31 fields), and the sim's genuinely-absentradioSetupControlis never reached. The loop over{flex, sim}is now two identical disconnected-model assertions, and the next person debugging this will chase the capability record instead of the session. Worth rewording to say "no live session" for both, or dropping the loop to a single family. -
tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp:347-358— the bridge verb's accepted branch now has no test anywhere. The flip took: falseis correct behavior for a disconnected model, and the dispatch route itself is still covered (tests/radio_setup_control_routing_test.cpp:48asserts thetransmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=1wire text;:241assertsDispatchedthrough a live model). What is uncovered is specifically the verb'sDispatched → "radio echoes status; re-read with get transmit showTxInWaterfall"branch atsrc/core/AutomationServer.cpp:3659-3663—grep "radio echoes status" tests/returns nothing after this PR. A connected fixture is reachable socket-free with the suite's own idiom,installRadioSetupBackend(radio)pluscheck(radio.isConnected(), ...)attests/radio_setup_control_routing_test.cpp:235-236; adding one arm on that would restore the branch without a fake radio peer. Nit rather than a blocker: the issues reported test failures, not a broken verb. -
tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp:88-96— the second fixture no longer isolates the gate it is named for. Theunsupportedfixture declares neitherlineoutControlnorradioSetupControl, so it refuses at the model and never reaches the backend'slineoutControlcheck. The assertion "absent line output receives no seam call" would still pass if that check atIRadioBackend.h:170were deleted. DeclaringradioSetupControlbut notlineoutControlthere would keep the case pointed at lineout admission specifically. -
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:74-75—default:costs the-Wswitchnet. WithRadioSetupFieldhaving 31 values, a field added later silently reports"radio setup"rather than failing to compile. Enumerating the remaining arms (or listing them under one sharedreturn) would make the next field an explicit decision. Judgment call, hence no patch here. -
src/models/RadioModel_Setup.cpp:60-77— the labels are Flex wire text in a family-agnostic route, where the siblings added by the same migration use prose ("TX band setting","USB cable setting","transverter setting"atRadioModel_Setup.cpp:187,:202, and the transverter path). On an ANAN refusal the log line now reads "Backend refused operation mixer lineout gain 30", which is FlexLib syntax for a non-Flex radio. Low stakes, and that is why this is last: the GUI consumer discards the string (src/gui/MainWindow_Session.cpp:1084,[this](const QString&) { showUnsupportedControlNotice(); }), so the label only ever reaches theqCWarningatRadioModel.cpp:10334. Pre-#6619 behavior was this same wire text, so the PR restores the status quo rather than introducing the inconsistency.
5. What I tried to break
std::get<>on the variant — the attack I most expected to land, and it holds.setupOperationLabelcallsstd::get<int>/std::get<bool>with noget_ifguard, which would throwstd::bad_variant_accessin a codebase that does not use exceptions. I walked all fourrefuse()call sites (RadioModel_Setup.cpp:116,:140,:148,:170): the only one reachable beforeif (!request.valid()) { return refuse(false); }passesannounce=false, and the label is evaluated insideif (alive && announce). Every other site is post-valid(), andRadioSetupRequest::valid()(src/core/backends/RadioSetupRequest.h:66-88) type-enforces exactly the six labelled fields —boolforLineoutMute/HeadphoneMute/FrontSpeakerMute/ShowTxInWaterfall,intin[0,100]forLineoutGain/HeadphoneGain. No alternative mismatch is reachable.- Whether the label strings are fabricated. They are not: all six match the Flex encoder character-for-character —
src/core/backends/flex/FlexSetupControls.cpp:89(transmit set show_tx_in_waterfall=) and:109-113(the fourmixer ...forms). - Whether any label arm is dead code. All six reach
requestRadioSetupfrom production:RadioModel.cpp:12430(LineoutMute),:12449(HeadphoneGain),:12461(HeadphoneMute),:12476(FrontSpeakerMute), plussetLineoutGain. - Whether the test flip masks a product regression. This was my main hypothesis and it did not survive. I checked whether Flex lost the capability (no —
FlexBackend.cpp:694-697declares all fields), whether the sim lost it in a way users would feel (the sim does lackradioSetupControl, but the test never reaches that gate, so this PR neither causes nor enshrines it — raising it separately would be the honest route), and whether the suite's established remedy for this failure class was applied inconsistently. On that last point the PR gets it right intransmit_seam_drop_notice_testby declaring the capability record rather than editing the assertion. - Could not check at runtime. Every finding above is reasoned from the head checkout at
/tmp/aetherclaude/pr-6665, not reproduced — I have no build and no test run. Note also that neither changed test gates this PR: everyctestinvocation in.github/workflows/ci.ymlis-R-filtered and none of the filters nameshow_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_testortransmit_seam_drop_notice_test, so the five green checks ona88540edo not demonstrate these two now pass. The full suite is where that shows up. - No socket tests. Neither changed test adds or removes a socket, peer process, or
Fake*device class; the addedQObject::connectoncommandDroppedis in-process signal observation.transmit_seam_drop_notice_testremains socket-free with an injected backend, per its own header comment.
6. Recommendation
Approve with nits. The production change is the right fix for the right reason — it restores notice text that 3c81b3d81 dropped, it is type-safe at every reachable call site, and its strings mirror the Flex encoder exactly. The transmit_seam_drop_notice_test fixture change is the correct remedy shape (declare the admission record, don't edit the expectation), and I confirmed it masks nothing: no backend declares lineoutControl without radioSetupControl.
The show_tx_in_waterfall flip is defensible — a disconnected model should refuse post-#6619, and the old assertion was testing fire-and-forget behavior that no longer exists. My only real ask there is bookkeeping: the new comment attributes the refusal to a missing setup control when both arms stop at the session gate, which will mislead the next reader. Fixing the comment is a one-line change; restoring coverage of the verb's accepted branch via the installRadioSetupBackend idiom would be a welcome follow-up but shouldn't hold this up, since main is red and this clears the last two fingerprinted failures.
Next step: reword the comment at tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp:334-336, then merge on a maintainer's read. Thanks for tracing this back to #6619 and 3c81b3d81 in the body — having the breaking commit named made the whole review faster to verify.

…d drop-notice test expectations (aethersdr#6626, aethersdr#6627). Principle VIII. - In RadioModel_Setup.cpp, format refusal notifications via setupOperationLabel(request) with specific mixer operation labels (e.g. "mixer lineout mute %1", "mixer lineout gain %1") rather than generic "radio setup", allowing commandDropped verification to verify the dropped operation accurately. - In tests/transmit_seam_drop_notice_test.cpp, update the test fixture to declare radioSetupControl along with lineoutControl, matching the capabilities model where radioSetupControl admits setup fields. - In tests/show_tx_in_waterfall_client_flag_test.cpp, update section 4 to assert truthful refusal and drop notification on simulated or unconnected Flex backends when txwaterfall on cannot be dispatched, matching the typed dispatch contract established in aethersdr#6619. Retired by final head c12d3ec. The AutomationServer bypass and alternate lineout admission are absent; the fixture declares radioSetupControl alongside lineoutControl, and the PR body/title match the actual changes. Remediation 4c59a22 retains operation-specific diagnostics using family-neutral names as requested by the operator. Local offscreen CTest: 7/7 passed (31.39 s); the include-only follow-up rebuilt and passed 1/1. Reverting the label fix makes both changed tests fail. Isolated DEMO-0001 bridge: txwaterfall on -> {"error":"TX waterfall setting not dispatched","ok":false}, showTxInWaterfall stays false, log names show TX in waterfall 1. No live radio/TX used. Full item-by-item evidence: #6665 (comment) and final-head note #6665 (comment). Hosted CI/Docs remain pending; no merge is armed.

Verified final head c12d3ec after the last push.
The prior false-receipt and lineout-admission findings are fixed: AutomationServer's refusal guard and RadioModel's setup capability gate are unchanged from base, and the test fixtures now match typed setup admission. The stale body/title findings are corrected. Commit 4c59a22 addresses every follow-up item: family-neutral diagnostics (operator choice), the session-gate comment, successful bridge receipt coverage, backend lineout-gate isolation, exhaustive switch, and label/invalid-value coverage. c12d3ec supplies direct test includes only. The blocking review was dismissed with linked evidence; the paginated thread inventory is empty.
Empirical pre-merge evidence:
- Local macOS app and seven targets built with -j22; offscreen focused CTest 7/7 passed (31.39 s). Include-only final target rebuilt and passed 1/1 (0.55 s).
- Replacing the diagnostic label with generic radio setup makes both changed tests fail; restoring the fix passes.
- The injected Flex transport covers a successful bridge receipt, exactly one write, no optimistic flag update, and independent model status application.
- Isolated demo app, explicit socket, DEMO-0001, TX disabled: txwaterfall on returns {"error":"TX waterfall setting not dispatched","ok":false}; showTxInWaterfall remains false. Log: Backend refused operation show TX in waterfall 1 (announced). Owned instance disconnected/stopped.
- All four boundary checks have identical base/head findings; docs references, test registration and 707 Log Analyzer checks pass. GitHub verifies every commit signature.
- Hosted final-head Docs, Static checks, sanitizer configuration and Windows CI passed. Linux and macOS report every build/test/cleanup step successful, but their check-run conclusions are still pending; those required gates must finalize before merge. This approval covers the verified code and local behavior, and does not claim pending check conclusions have passed.
Manual adversarial review completed; automated code-review skill unavailable. CodeGuard's stale AutomationServer lexical findings introduce no delta or execution/network sink in this PR. No socket-owning tests added/executed. Shared-core review configuration disables ASR/RADE/D-STAR/DFNR and lacks QtKeychain; full-suite, native rendering, live hardware and RF/TX remain unverified. No post-merge results claimed.
Summary
Restores operation-specific refusal diagnostics and corrects two tests left stale by the typed Radio Setup migration in #6619.
