fix: post-merge review findings (#249) for the mysql-mcp image and local build - #250
Fixes the three findings from CodeRabbit's post-merge review (#249) of #244, #245, #246 and #248. Those PRs were merged after CodeRabbit runs that were rate limited, not completed.
What
MYSQL_MCP_USER equal to MYSQL_USER (Major):
The official entrypoint creates that account (with all privileges on MYSQL_DATABASE) before first-start scripts run, so the image's CREATE USER failed. A restart then skipped the setup, leaving a server without the guard.
A new entrypoint wrapper (docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-entrypoint.sh) checks the MYSQL_MCP_* settings before the data directory is initialized, then runs docker-entrypoint.sh. It refuses this combination, a missing password, root, and a non-numeric time limit. The init script keeps its own checks.
Health check port from option files (Minor): when the command line sets no port, the probe reads port= from the server's option files with my_print_defaults, honoring --defaults-file / --defaults-extra-file. It falls back to 3306. A port on the command line still takes precedence.
scripts/build-docker-local.sh (Major): 9.7 builds with GCC 11, because MySQL 9.7.4 rejects GCC older than 11. 8.0 and 8.4 keep GCC 10, as in docker-publish.yml.
Docs:docs/MCP_COMPONENTS.md. CHANGELOG.
Verification
scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: 25/25 locally (8.4.11 image, arm64). New checks:
the health check finds a port of 3308 set in a mounted option file;
MYSQL_MCP_USER = MYSQL_USER makes the container exit with that message, and the data directory is never initialized.
The old image fails both.
g++-11 / gcc-11 are available in ubuntu:22.04, the container build-docker-local.sh uses.
The MySQL MCP image validates settings before initializing a data directory. Startup is blocked for missing passwords, the root account, invalid or conflicting usernames, and non-numeric execution-time limits. Validation is skipped for an already initialized data directory.
Health checks now discover MySQL’s configured port, including settings provided through option files, and use port 3306 if no port is found.
Documentation
Updated Docker image guidance to describe startup validation, account permissions, and health-check behavior.
…cal build
CodeRabbit's review of #244/#245/#246/#248 as merged (#249):
- mysql-mcp image: an entrypoint wrapper checks the MYSQL_MCP_* settings before
the official entrypoint initializes the data directory; MYSQL_MCP_USER equal
to MYSQL_USER is refused (CREATE USER failed in first-start setup, and a
restart then skipped the setup).
- Health check: read port= from option files (my_print_defaults, honoring
--defaults-file) when the command line sets no port.
- build-docker-local.sh: GCC 11 for 9.7 (9.7.4 rejects GCC < 11), GCC 10 for
8.0/8.4, as in docker-publish.yml.
- test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: option-file port, MYSQL_USER clash (25 checks).

Walkthrough
The MySQL MCP image validates settings before data-directory initialization and resolves health-check ports through mysqld. Image tests cover option-file ports and invalid account settings. The local Docker build script selects GCC versions by MySQL version.
The image validates MCP settings before invoking the official entrypoint. It rejects invalid or conflicting usernames and invalid execution-time values. Tests cover startup refusal before database initialization and startup with an initialized data directory.
Configured-port health check docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-healthcheck.sh, scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh
The health check verifies that PID 1 runs mysqld and obtains its resolved port from its arguments and option files. The image test covers port 3308 from an option file.

Explanation
The title names the main change: fixes from a post-merge review (#249) for the mysql-mcp image and the local build. The changeset covers the entrypoint validation, the health check port discovery, the GCC version selection for local builds, and the related docs and tests. The title names the image and the local build but does not name the specific fixes. A reader scanning history gets the scope but not the detail. The title is specific enough to pass.

A rabbit checks the names at dawn, Then waits until the first-start checks are done. The port is found where mysqld says, While GCC follows MySQL’s ways. Tests watch each container start, And tidy paths complete the chart.

Read the server option groups when probing the port
When a deployment sets a non-default port in the [server] group of an option file, mysqld reads that group but this query asks my_print_defaults only for mysqld; the probe therefore falls back to 3306 and marks the container unhealthy even though the server is listening on the configured port. MySQL documents both the server groups and that my_print_defaults reports the groups it is given (server options, my_print_defaults).

Review comments at @docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-entrypoint.sh:
- Line 17: Update the MYSQL_MCP_USER comparison to resolve MYSQL_USER_FILE when
MYSQL_USER is unset, so file-backed values are checked before account creation;
preserve the official entrypoint’s conflicting-variable check.
Review comments at @docker/mysql-mcp/mysql-mcp-healthcheck.sh:
- Line 19: Update the option-file discovery using `args` and `defaults` to skip
searching for `--defaults-file` or `--defaults-extra-file` when `args` contains
`--no-defaults`; preserve the existing discovery behavior otherwise.
- Line 20: Quote the defaults argument in the my_print_defaults invocation so a
--defaults-file path containing spaces is passed as one argument; preserve the
existing port parsing and 3306 fallback behavior.
- Line 20: Update the port lookup using my_print_defaults so it reads the same
option groups as the running mysqld, including [server] and the applicable
version-specific group, and preserves MySQL’s group precedence when selecting
the effective port.
Review comments at @scripts/test-mysql-mcp-image.sh:
- Line 75: Replace the predictable `/tmp/$CNAME-port.cnf` path in the MySQL test
script with a securely created temporary file using `mktemp`, and ensure that
file is removed during the script’s cleanup.
- Line 94: Replace the GNU-only timeout dependency in the CNAME_PLAIN docker
wait with a portable bounded wait, using gtimeout when available or polling
Docker container status and exit code. Preserve the timeout result when the
container does not exit within the bound.

…MYSQL_USER_FILE
CodeRabbit on 2ba70c5:
- Health check: ask mysqld for its port (mysqld <PID 1 args> --verbose --help),
so option groups ([server], [mysqld-<ver>]), --defaults-file (spaces too) and
--no-defaults apply exactly as for the server; not ready while PID 1 is still
the entrypoint (first-start setup).
- Entrypoint: compare MYSQL_MCP_USER with the user in MYSQL_USER_FILE too.
- test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: mktemp instead of a predictable /tmp path; a
portable bounded wait instead of timeout(1); [server] group port and
MYSQL_USER_FILE clash cases (27 checks).

…ndex
CodeRabbit on f633ec4:
- The official entrypoint puts MYSQL_USER into SQL unescaped, so app\q creates
appq and passed the comparison with MYSQL_MCP_USER=appq. MYSQL_MCP_USER must
now be a plain name ([A-Za-z0-9_.-], <= 32), and a MYSQL_USER with a
backslash or quote is refused when MYSQL_MCP_USER is set.
- Health check: the port lookup passes a throwaway --log-bin-index, as the
official entrypoint does, so the live binary log index is never touched.
- test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: both refusals (31 checks).

…d user names
CodeRabbit on 4d0ba0e:
- The MYSQL_MCP_* checks run only while the data directory is uninitialized
(found as the official entrypoint finds it), so a volume created by an earlier
image with a name the checks now refuse keeps starting; the settings are not
used after initialization anyway.
- A MYSQL_USER with leading or trailing whitespace is refused when
MYSQL_MCP_USER is set (MySQL trims it: ' app ' is app).
- test-mysql-mcp-image.sh: both cases (34 checks).
