Description

Makes PhoneInput's selected country controllable and adds dial-code detection, per the proposal in the issue — plus a fix for a digit-eating bug found while testing the detection against real editing flows.

  • country / onCountryChange routed through useControllableState, alongside defaultCountry for uncontrolled use. The selected Country is now derived from the stored code + countries, so a changed countries prop can no longer leave a stale country on screen.
  • Dial-code detection: typing or pasting a number starting with + switches the country (longest matching dial code wins; shared +1 / +7 keep the currently selected country when it shares the code, else the first offered one) and strips the prefix from the value. Detection only ever lands on a country inside the countries prop.
  • Never consumes pre-existing digits: a dial code is only stripped when all of its digits were entered after the +. Typing + in front of an existing number leaves the value and country untouched; completing +1 in front of it switches to US with every digit intact. (+4 in front of 9192 is refused — it would borrow an old 9 to fake +49.)

Closes #31

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New component
  • Enhancement
  • Documentation / website
  • CI / infrastructure

(Bug-fix aspect: detection previously stripped digits that were already in the field — called out in Notes.)

Checklist

  • Dark mode / responsive styles considered — no styling changes; shadcn tokens untouched
  • npm ci succeeds — repo is bun-locked (bun.lock); CI runs the equivalent install
  • npm run lint passes
  • npm run typecheck passes
  • npm run test passes — 316 tests, 44 in test/phone-input.test.tsx
  • npm run build passes — both next build and build:lib (tsup)
  • CI checks pass

Usage

"use client";

import { useState } from "react";
import { PhoneInput } from "@/components/ui/phone-input";

export function PhoneField() {
  const [phone, setPhone] = useState("");
  const [countryCode, setCountryCode] = useState("US");

  return (
    <PhoneInput
      value={phone}
      country={countryCode}
      onCountryChange={(country) => setCountryCode(country.code)}
      onValueChange={(value, country) => {
        setPhone(value);
        console.log(country.dialCode);
      }}
    />
  );
}

Uncontrolled use is unchanged: omit country and seed with defaultCountry.

Notes

  • country is a code string ("US"), matching defaultCountry's shape and LanguageSwitcher's value/defaultValue convention; onCountryChange reports the resolved Country object, same as onValueChange's second argument.
  • onCountryChange fires only on real transitions — re-picking the current country or keeping it across a shared dial code reports nothing (guarded at a single pickCountry choke point).
  • Detection is provenance-based: a small prev → next diff maintains a count of characters typed after the leading +; the dial code is consumed only if its whole span fits in that zone. Diff ambiguity biases toward under-counting, so the failure mode is always "skip detection", never "eat a digit". An externally changed value (controlled prop, programmatic set) restarts the count conservatively.
  • Controlled semantics: with country controlled, the parent has the final say — honour onCountryChange for detection to switch countries (documented in the MDX).
  • Docs updated: props table (country, onCountryChange, reworded defaultCountry), Country control and Dial-code detection sections, features bullet, and the SDK example reworked to actually honour onCountryChange.
  • test:pack cannot run on Windows (execFileSync("npm") doesn't resolve npm.cmd — pre-existing script limitation, CI runs it on Linux); its check was reproduced manually (npm.cmd pack → install tarball in a throwaway project → CJS + ESM import both OK).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Phone inputs support controlled country selection and notify callers when the selected country changes.
    • Typing or pasting a +-prefixed dial code can select a matching offered country and strip the prefix. The longest matching code is selected; shared codes retain the current country when possible, and unmatched codes leave the selection unchanged.
    • Manually selecting a country takes precedence until the input next starts with +.
  • Documentation
    • Updated examples and prop guidance to describe controlled and default country selection, change notifications, and dial-code detection.

- country / onCountryChange routed through useControllableState; the selected Country is derived, so a changed countries prop can't go stale
- typing or pasting a +number switches country (longest dial code wins, shared +1/+7 keep the current selection, only offered countries match)
- a dial code is only consumed when its digits were typed after the +: prefixing an existing number never eats digits

Walkthrough

PhoneInput now supports controlled country selection and reports country changes. When newly entered digits after a leading + match an offered dial code, it selects a matching country and removes the prefix. Documentation and tests cover country control and dial-code detection.

Changes: PhoneInput country selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Controlled country selection
src/registry/components/phone-input.tsx, test/phone-input.test.tsx, content/docs/components/inputs/phone-input.mdx
PhoneInput adds controlled country and onCountryChange props while retaining defaultCountry for uncontrolled use. Country selection reports changes when the resolved country changes. Tests and documentation cover controlled selection and callbacks.
Dial-code detection
src/registry/components/phone-input.tsx, test/phone-input.test.tsx, content/docs/components/inputs/phone-input.mdx
PhoneInput matches newly entered digits after a leading + against offered dial codes. It prefers the longest match, retains the current country for shared codes when possible, and removes a matched prefix. It preserves digits that were already in the field. Tests and documentation cover matching and non-matching cases.

Explanation

Issue #31 requirements are met. PhoneInput adds controlled country and onCountryChange while retaining defaultCountry for uncontrolled use. The component derives the selected country from the stored code and the current countries list. Detection matches the longest offered dial code, handles shared +1 and +7 codes, switches only to offered countries, and strips eligible prefixes. Tests cover controlled updates, +44 paste detection, shared +1 behavior, parent callbacks, and preservation of pre-existing digits. The props table is updated.

Explanation

The changes remain within Issue #31. Source changes implement country control and dial-code detection. Tests cover the required behavior and related digit-preservation regressions. Documentation and the SDK example explain and demonstrate the new controlled behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Add a test for a fixed controlled country whose parent ignores onCountryChange.

The new controlled-mode tests either pass country through state that the parent updates, or they run uncontrolled with defaultCountry or no country prop. No test renders a fixed country with a vi.fn() callback and checks the displayed country after a +44 paste. The documented contract says the parent has the final say when country is controlled, so this path should have a regression test. It should check that:

  • the trigger still shows the fixed country (+91),
  • the pasted +44 prefix is still stripped from the field,
  • onCountryChange receives the GB country.
Suggested test
     await userEvent.click(screen.getByRole("button", { name: "set" }));

…ensitively

- pickCountry guarded on the raw country code, so country "gb" or an
  unknown code like "XX" reported a spurious onCountryChange when the
  displayed country was re-picked
- getCountryByCode uppercased only its argument, leaving lowercase entries
  in a hand-written countries list unreachable, including for the
  onCountryChange resolver
- regression tests: lowercase code, unknown-code fallback, and a controlled
  parent that ignores onCountryChange
- docs: shared dial-code bullet no longer implies +7 is shared out of the box

Defer only incremental edits when a longer code remains possible.

When +1 is typed before the remaining digits of offered +1242, the current handler strips +1 too early. A strict-prefix guard must apply only when the leading + already existed. Otherwise, the guard blocks a complete pasted +1.

Detection and the controllable country look solid. The provenance guard is worth the complexity: + in front of an existing 9192 correctly stays untouched. All checks pass locally, including both builds.

One change: the separator after the dial code survives the strip. Pasting +44 20 7946 0958 leaves " 20 7946 0958", +44-20-7946 leaves "-20-7946", +1 (416) 555 leaves " (416) 555". Please trim leading whitespace, - and . from the rest (e.g. rest.replace(/^[\s.-]+/, "")) and update the tests that assert the leading space.

- a separator arriving in the same event as the code was already trimmed
  in detectCountryPrefix, but typing it one keystroke later — once the
  strip had emptied the field — kept it, so "+91 987…" ended up as
  " 987…"; swallow a whitespace/dash/dot typed at the front of the value
  immediately after a strip, leaving mid-number separators alone
- docs: the detection section no longer promises a leading space and
  now mentions the separator being stripped too
- tests: renamed the three separator tests to describe what they cover,
  dropped leftover debug logging, and added paste regressions for
  "+44-20-7946" and "+1 (416) 555" that pin the trim itself (typed
  tests exercise the new swallow, not the trim)
