psmux 3.4.0 is released. It is the first release after 3.3.8, and it carries every upstream fix this backend has been working around: psmux/psmux#583, psmux/psmux#599, psmux/psmux#622, psmux/psmux#773, psmux/psmux#774 and psmux/psmux#775. This PR adopts it in one step. The step has to be atomic: once the gate's pin moves to v3.4.0, each test_premise_* tripwire goes red by design until its workaround retires. So the floor, the pin, the five retirements and the five row conversions land together.

Commits

  1. Require psmux 3.4.0 and retire the dash-leading option refusal (retire the trailer's pinned psmux path once psmux releases the psmux#773 fix; the case-folding session key stays #879).
  2. The control session goes back to one fixed name, bmad-loop-ctl (retire the per-registry control-session name once a psmux release carries the psmux#599 fix #733). the single-server name mutex ignores PSMUX_DATA_DIR, so two registries cannot both hold a session of the same name — including __warm__ (3.3.8/master) psmux/psmux#599 keys the server-name guard on the registry now. This is operator-visible:
    • A pre-upgrade bmad-loop-ctl-<digest> session is still treated as a control session, so it is never pruned.
    • New launches, the TUI's attach and stop keys, and the parked-window sweep all use bmad-loop-ctl.
    • The CHANGELOG and multiplexer-backends.md say how to retire the old session.
  3. The stranded-session ceiling narrows to the PATH case (narrow the removal guard's documented ceiling once a psmux release carries the psmux#622 fix #754). has-session deletes a live server's .port file on a connect timeout, un-listing the session for up to 5 s psmux/psmux#622: has-session no longer reaps a live .port file on a connect timeout.
  4. inherited_env on psmux (psmux 3.3.8 -> 3.3.9 adoption: umbrella for the floor bump, workaround retirement, and the follow-on tracks #660), through psmux 3.4.0's named show-environment (show-environment ignores NAME, omits inherited variables and prints removals as empty values (3.3.8, master) psmux/psmux#775). With it, the TUI's stale state-root note fires on Windows too.
    • The global query is session-targeted (-g -t =<session>), because psmux runs one server per session.
    • The reply echoes the stored spelling of the name, so the name is matched case-insensitively.
    • The shared reply parser moves to tmux_base.
  5. The CI psmux gate pin moves to v3.4.0.

Live gate

All five test_premise_* rows that pinned 3.3.8 behaviour become ordinary-direction test_adopted_* rows:

  • a --leading value is stored;
  • a pane inherits the server's start PATH;
  • two registries each hold a session of one name;
  • a live entry survives a slow connect;
  • a named, session-targeted show-environment answers for that one name.

Each converted row was shown to fail against a fake of the 3.3.8 behaviour.

Verification (Windows 11, PowerShell 7.6, psmux 3.4.0 20aa1d7)

  • tests/test_psmux_live.py, run serially from PowerShell: 28 passed.
  • The touched unit test files (cleanup, cli, multiplexer, psmux_backend, runs, tui_launch, tui_app, generic_tmux, the portability guard, conftest and docs hygiene): 3566 passed. The 5 failures are local-environment only and fail the same way on main: 4 are symlink WinError 1314 and 1 is a codex.CMD path.
  • Each change's touched test files also ran green on WSL, on its own branch before integration.
  • pyright reports 0 errors, black, isort and ruff are clean, and prettier passes on the docs.

Closes #879
Closes #733
Closes #754

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Compatibility
    • Native Windows support now requires psmux 3.4.0 or newer. Older versions are treated as unavailable.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Leading-hyphen psmux option values are now stored correctly.
    • Inherited environment values can now be read from psmux sessions, including values supplied at the server level. New panes also inherit the server’s starting PATH.
    • Same-named sessions can coexist in separate psmux registries.
    • Control sessions use a consistent name across transports and projects; older psmux control-session names remain protected from cleanup.

Walkthrough

The change raises the minimum supported psmux version to 3.4.0, adds psmux inherited-environment queries, and allows dash-leading option values. It also changes new control sessions to use a fixed name across bundled transports while retaining recognition of the legacy digest-suffixed name.

Explanation

The PR implements the main requirements in #733. It restores bmad-loop-ctl, recognizes legacy digest-suffixed control sessions, keeps mint and parse predicates separate, preserves the reserved --run-id refusal, and updates control-session documentation. It implements the psmux 3.4.0 floor and the adopted tests for #879. However, #879 requires removal of the pinned psmux path after the supported floor reaches the release with the PATH fix. psmux_backend.py still resolves an absolute psmux path for _parked_trailer. The PR also narrows live_session_may_be_ours for #754, but the reviewed docs/FEATURES.md change only updates the version text and does not narrow that document's stranded-session ceiling to the PATH case.

A rabbit checked the server’s start-time trail,
Then found the pane’s inherited PATH without fail.
Dash-leading values hopped through the gate,
While fixed-name sessions gathered to wait.
Old suffixes stayed known in the registry’s light,
And psmux queries returned names right.

Comment thread src/bmad_loop/adapters/psmux_backend.py
…efusal

psmux 3.4.0 stores a `-`-leading option value verbatim (psmux/psmux#583), so
`_LAST_UNSUPPORTED` moves to (3, 3, 8) and `_transportable` stops refusing an
`@` option value that starts with `-`. On 3.3.8 and older the backend now
reports unavailable, and selection falls through.

The parked-window trailer keeps its pinned psmux path. 3.4.0 panes inherit
the PATH of the process that started the server (psmux/psmux#773), but a
long-lived control session can be served by a server that another launcher,
or a pre-floor psmux, started, and there a bare name fails silently.

The bmad-code-org#583 and bmad-code-org#773 live premise rows become ordinary-direction rows: a
dash-leading value is stored, and a pane inherits the server's start PATH.
psmux 3.4.0 keys its single-server name mutex on the registry as well as the
session name (psmux/psmux#599), so two per-project registries can each hold a
session called bmad-loop-ctl. The per-registry digest suffix that worked
around the collision retires: ctl_session_for answers bmad-loop-ctl on every
transport. is_ctl_session_name still recognises a bmad-loop-ctl-<digest>
session left running from before the upgrade, so prune, cleanup and the TUI
keep treating it as a control session, but nothing launches into it. The
reserved --run-id refusal is unchanged.

The live premise row becomes the ordinary-direction row that two registries
each hold a session of one name.

Closes bmad-code-org#733
psmux 3.4.0 no longer reaps a live server's .port file when has-session's
connect times out (psmux/psmux#622), so a listing that omits a live session
now has one known cause: a process whose PATH lacks the multiplexer binary.
The live_session_may_be_ours docstring and the recovery guide drop the reap
half, and the live premise row becomes the ordinary-direction row that a live
registry entry survives a slow connect.

Closes bmad-code-org#754
…vironment

psmux 3.4.0 answers `show-environment` for one named variable the way tmux
does (psmux/psmux#775): named queries, `unknown variable`, `-NAME` removals and
a real `-g` scope. The psmux backend now implements inherited_env on top of it,
so the TUI's stale state-root note fires on Windows too. psmux runs one server
per session, so the global query is session-targeted (`-g -t =<session>`), and
the reply echoes the stored spelling of the name, so it is matched
case-insensitively. The shared reply parser moves to tmux_base.

The live premise row becomes the ordinary-direction row that a named,
session-targeted global query answers for that one name.
The floor is 3.4.0 and the workarounds the 3.3.8 premise rows guarded are
retired, so the blocking gate now tests the release bmad-loop requires.
Describe what bmad-loop does with a bmad-loop-ctl-<16 hex> session today
(a control session, never pruned, never launched into) and how to end one,
without the release chronology, which stays in the CHANGELOG.
