A small offline studio for image DNA, editable patterns and looping materials.
简体中文 · Download · Guide · Research
Turn an image into a compact representation you can inspect and edit. Fit a pattern, change its color and structure, preview its repetition, and export a tile or an independent looping player. Everything runs locally.

Recommended. Portable app, guide and licenses. |
GENOME-…-windows-x64.exe |
The same application as a single executable. |
GENOME-…-windows-x64-compact.zip |
Smaller build, same features; fitting may be slower. |
GENOME-…-examples.zip |
Recipes, PNG tiles, atlases, SVGs and offline HTML players. |
SHA256SUMS.txt |
SHA-256 hashes of the downloadable assets. |
| Source code (ZIP / TAR.GZ) | For building and modifying the application. |
Windows 10/11 x64, an OpenGL 2.1+ graphics driver, and a writable folder.
Unzip and run genome.exe. No installer, administrator privileges, Rust, Python,
model download or background service is required. Binaries are currently unsigned.
Preferences stay beside the EXE. First launch is English / Light; settings
offer English, 简体中文, 日本語 and 한국어, with a teal light/dark theme.
Get-FileHash .\GENOME-0.2.0-windows-x64.zip -Algorithm SHA256- Rebuild — explore 32 B–16 KiB image budgets, protect regions, inspect actual encoded instruction contributions, and save standalone DNA.
- Create — fit editable periodic rules or palette pixel art. Adjust color, density, shear, bend and variation; paint or protect cells; preview tiles and designed loops. Reopen recipes without their original images.
- Explore — search for the smallest found file satisfying global, region and edge error limits. Reallocate a fixed byte budget and preview real tradeoffs.
PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP and GIF input; DNA and GRECIPE reopening. PNG tiles, 16-frame atlases and independent HTML export. Plain pixel geometry also exports actual SVG paths and palette text.
Ctrl+O open · Ctrl+S save · Space pause/play · Ctrl+Z undo · Esc dismiss preview.
See the guide for masks, constraints and byte accounting.
Periodic fitting is useful for repeated color patterns; it can blur hard edges and fail on photographs or noise. Animation is designed motion, not recovered physical motion. Pixel protection is user-guided, not semantic understanding. The search is finite: “smallest found” is not a theoretical-minimum proof.
PNG/WebP generally preserve ordinary pictures better at moderate and larger budgets. GENOME is for compact, editable creative representations. Research includes losses, three seeds and a held-out set; see measurements. Fresh-machine and human blind-quality testing are not claimed.
Source, assets, tests and the lockfile are included. Toolchains, caches, personal settings and experiment intermediates are excluded.
# Project-local GNU toolchain; no global PATH changes.

.\scripts\build.ps1 -TestWith an existing Rust/MSVC environment:
.\scripts\build.ps1 -UseSystemToolchain -TestOutput: dist/genome.exe. Compiler: rust-toolchain.toml. Python 3 is optional
for example packaging; the normal build and app do not require it. See
CONTRIBUTING and release maintenance.
