runcluster.pl (#856) runs DtraceNonceFixer on every trace. Fixes to DtraceNonceFixer:

  • When adding a nonce to a sample, retain the sample's first variable. Previously, it was lost.
  • Do not add nonces to declarations, and preserve their indentation.
  • Read the intermediate file only after it has been closed, which is required for compressed files.
  • Detect the end of file correctly, rather than using BufferedReader.ready().
  • Add an optional OUTFILE argument; when it is given, no other output file remains.

The new DtraceNonceFixerTest tests these.

📝 Walkthrough

The fixer now processes DTrace paragraphs, corrects existing nonces, and assigns missing nonces by matching EXIT and THROWS samples to unmatched ENTER samples. It supports optional output paths, compressed files, symbolic-link targets, and temporary-file replacement. The new JUnit tests cover nonce assignment, parsing, and file handling, and are included in the test suite.

No issue identified here needs correction before merging; normal checks should still run.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 30f1e

The replacement mode has two bounded risks: temporary trace copies can be more broadly readable than a protected destination, and unnoticed write failures can replace the original with incomplete output. Exposure depends on local filesystem permissions and affects files selected by the caller.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new OUTFILE mode stages trace contents using default permissions and applies an existing destination's POSIX permissions only immediately before replacement. If a private input directory feeds a restricted destination in a directory readable by other local users, permissive defaults can expose intermediate copies despite the destination's restrictions. Default-permission sidecars already existed; the concern is the newly independent destination directory and incomplete preservation of its confidentiality controls.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Both processing stages use PrintWriter without checking its suppressed write or close errors. A stage can therefore return after incomplete output and proceed to destination replacement. Unchecked writes predate this PR, but the new in-place contract can now discard the original input, materially weakening failure containment and recovery. Atomic replacement protects publication ordering, not output completeness.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is local: trace contents, intermediate copies, and destinations accessible under the invoking process's filesystem authority. The reviewed entrypoint does not itself grant additional privileges. No tenant-wide or cross-service exposure is established by this evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A separate local account with directory access could read staged trace variables when default temporary permissions allow it, even if the selected destination is restricted. This is conditional on directory permissions, umask or ACLs, and sensitive trace contents; no deployed exploitation was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Symbolic-link resolution is intentional destination behavior, not path confinement. Both processing writers close before replacement, and final POSIX permission copying provides a publication-time control rather than a confidentiality control over the preceding intermediate files.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Thrown processing exceptions ordinarily prevent replacement, but suppressed PrintWriter failures bypass that containment. Process termination can also leave intermediate copies because cleanup depends on finally. Actual persistence and visibility depend on the filesystem and deployment permissions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep intermediate files owner-only until publication, then apply the intended final permissions. Require successful writing, flushing, and closing before replacement through an error-propagating writer or equivalent explicit validation.

* Give an EXIT sample without a nonce the nonce of its ENTER sample,
pairing them with a call stack as Daikon does.
* With OUTFILE, write the intermediate file to a fresh temporary file
and delete it even if an exception occurs.
* Always write the nonce header exactly as Daikon requires it.
* Skip leading comment lines when classifying a paragraph, and look for
the nonce only directly after the program point name.
* dtrace-add-cluster.pl: use the OUTFILE argument instead of renaming
the output, which did not work for compressed files.
* DtraceNonceFixerTest: use a TemporaryFolder, and test ENTER/EXIT
  pairing.

* Write the final output to a temporary file and move it onto OUTFILE,
so a failure does not destroy the input when it is also the output.
* Do not treat a THROWS sample with nonce 0 as the start of a new file.
* Match a nonce-less EXIT sample with an ENTER sample that has a nonce.
* Like Daikon, end a record only at an empty line, and preserve whitespace.
* Parse each paragraph once; make call-stack operations amortized O(1).
* Classify ENTER/EXIT/THROWS points the same way that Daikon does.
* dtrace-add-cluster.pl: do not let the shell interpret the file name.
* Test in-place and compressed files, THROWS, mixed nonces, and whitespace.
- Do not pair a nonce-less EXIT with an ENTER whose nonce appears on an EXIT.
- Give a new OUTFILE the default permissions, not owner-only.
- When OUTFILE is a symbolic link, replace the file it refers to.
- Require the nonce header to match exactly, as Daikon does.
- Remove the PptName cache; classify program points by their names.
