This is one of three PRs split from #858. It is independent of #875; #877 depends on both. It makes the program point type predicates (is_enter, is_exit, is_combined_exit, is_subexit, is_object, is_class) consistent. It replaces #871.

Previously, each predicate used the declared program point type when there was one, and otherwise the name. Declared types are not always consistent with the name: some front ends declare a numbered exit such as foo:::EXIT22 with ppt-type exit, which made it a combined exit. Now PptTopLevel.normalize_type determines each program point's type, and the predicates use only the type:

  • A program point with no declared type gets its type from its name.
  • A program point declared exit or subexit is a combined exit (foo:::EXIT) or a numbered exit (foo:::EXIT<id>), according to its name.
  • A program point declared point keeps that type, whatever its name.
  • A program point declared enter, object, or class keeps that type, but its name must conform to the type, as the developer manual requires. Otherwise, reading the declaration fails with an error.

To distinguish a missing ppt-type record from ppt-type point, FileIO no longer defaults the type to point. A PptConditional takes its parent's type.

In the KnownValues, KnownValuesNewDecls, and NonZeroLargeRange tests, the numbered exits are declared with ppt-type exit. They are now subexits, so Daikon creates their combined exit, and the goal files report invariants at :::EXIT rather than :::EXIT1.

PptTopLevel.normalize_type derives the type from the name when the
declaration gives no type, or gives the type exit or point, so the
is_enter, is_exit, is_combined_exit, is_subexit, is_object, and is_class
predicates no longer need name-based fallbacks. A numbered exit declared
with type exit is a subexit.

* Daikon.create_combined_exits does not replace a declared combined exit.
* AnnotateNullable handles an .inv file that lacks a combined exit.
* PptConditional takes its parent's type.

Split from codespecs#858.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

PptTopLevel now infers or validates program-point types from names, and its predicates use the normalized type. FileIO leaves missing declared types null and reports constructor validation errors through decl_error. PptConditional copies its parent’s type. Three goal files now use EXIT instead of EXIT1 for the listed program points.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8f62b

New declarations gain consistent type validation without an evidenced expansion of privileges or input reachability. A bounded compatibility risk remains: older saved invariant files can restore program points without the type now required by their classification predicates.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Restoring an older serialized PptMap bypasses the new normalized-type invariant. Version-1 declarations previously created points with null type; deserialization still accepts that state, while the changed predicates no longer classify it by name. This silently changes restored-state behavior rather than migrating or rejecting incompatible state. The affected boundary is saved-analysis recovery, not an evidenced privilege or authorization boundary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the analysis invocation consuming declarations or saved invariant files and its program-point results. The inspected changes do not evidence a new tenant, service, credential, or privilege transition; broader deployment exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Construction validates fresh declaration types before publication. Failure is reported as Daikon.UserError through the existing error boundary, rather than continuing with a nonconforming program point.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The legacy restoration concern does not establish that invariant checking stops processing entry or exit samples: InvariantChecker uses name predicates for call pairing and numbered-to-combined-exit propagation. This is concrete counterevidence against a broader checking-bypass claim.

Comment thread java/daikon/PptTopLevel.java Outdated
* A missing ppt-type is derived from the name; an explicit "point" is kept.
* A ppt declared exit or subexit is a combined or numbered exit according
to its name; any other declared type must conform to the name, or
reading the declaration fails with an error.
* Remove backward-compatibility code for older .inv files.
* Daikon.create_combined_exits again replaces a declared combined exit.
* Remove PptName.isExitWithLineNumber; use isNumberedExitPoint.

PptTopLevel.normalize_type, from codespecs#876, checks a declared type against
the program point's name, so FileIO.parse_ppt_type no longer does. The
type-based is_dataflow_leaf replaces share-hierarchy's name-based one.
