In a make recipe, $(cmd) is a reference to a make variable, which is empty, not shell command substitution. The is-ci.sh test in tests/Makefile was therefore always false, so CI ran daikon-tests with --jobs=4 instead of the intended --jobs=1.

  • New file tests/Makefile.jobs holds the settings shared by the three test-driver Makefiles (tests/Makefile, tests/kvasir-tests/Makefile, tests/dyncomp-tests/Makefile): MPARG, DAIKONDIR, PLUME_SCRIPTS, and TEST_JOBS.
  • TEST_JOBS is computed once at parse time and exported, so recursive invocations of make do not recompute it. A value set on the command line or in the environment takes precedence.
  • If is-ci.sh is missing, make stops with an error instead of silently using 4 jobs.

Related changes were split into #897 (JAVA_HOME) and #898 (DAIKONDIR).

In a make recipe, $(cmd) is a make variable reference, not shell command
substitution; it must be written $$(cmd). Outside a recipe, use $(shell cmd).

The changes update Java discovery and command variables, including deferred missing-JDK checks in test Makefiles. They add shared Make settings for test parallelism and apply those settings to recursive test and cleanup invocations. Several test Makefiles also change how they assign the default DAIKONDIR.

…define MPARG

- Choose --jobs once at parse time (TEST_JOBS); a missing is-ci.sh means not under CI.
- Evaluate JAVA_HOME once, and fail clearly on macOS if no JDK is found.
- Use the same DAIKONDIR idiom in the kvasir-tests and dyncomp-tests Makefile.common.
- Define MPARG in tests/dyncomp-tests/Makefile.
…tent DAIKONDIR

* New tests/Makefile.jobs holds MPARG, DAIKONDIR, PLUME_SCRIPTS and TEST_JOBS
for the three test-driver Makefiles. It fails clearly if is-ci.sh is
missing, computes TEST_JOBS once and exports it, and honors a TEST_JOBS
value from the command line or environment.
* tests/Makefile.common sets JAVA_HOME before including Makefile.user, so the
junit and junit5 Makefile.user files no longer duplicate the detection.
Locate javac with a single shell command. Check for a missing JDK only when
JAVA or JAVAC is expanded, so targets such as "clean" work without a JDK.
* java/Makefile: compute JAVA_HOME once and fail clearly if no JDK is found.
* Define DAIKONDIR with ":=" in the remaining test Makefiles; fix its depth in
  tests/daikon-tests/Makefile.

- Line 29: Update the JAVA_HOME check in the Makefile to treat an empty value as
missing rather than checking whether the variable is undefined, so empty
settings trigger JDK discovery and missing-JDK validation. Use override when
assigning the discovered value so an empty command-line JAVA_HOME can be
replaced.

Review comments at @tests/Makefile.jobs:
- Around line 27-28: Remove the parse-time error triggered when TEST_JOBS is
undefined and is-ci.sh is absent; defer that check to targets that need the
detected job count. Ensure cleanup targets can still run by providing a usable
TEST_JOBS fallback, while keeping help and clean available without is-ci.sh.

…do not set DAIKONDIR

Computing the job count only when a recipe uses it lets targets such as
clean and help work when plume-scripts is absent. An empty value is
treated as unset. The variable is no longer exported.

…S_2 fixes

Master's DAIKONDIR and tests/Makefile.jdk handling replaces this pull request's
check-daikondir.mk. The plume-scripts.mk change is dropped. The is-ci.sh fix
is left to codespecs#892.
