SplitterFactoryTest calls Daikon's methods, so java/Makefile now recompiles it when daikon/Daikon.class changes.

Depends on #906, which makes SplitterFactoryTest a valid JUnit 4 class whose main runs its tests, and makes the junit target run it. Until #906 is merged, this PR's diff includes #906's changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The splitter test updater now supports optional goal-file updates and generates JUnit 4 tests. The Makefile builds and runs those tests through the junit target and adds a target for updating splitter goals. SplitterFactory gains a method to reset its naming counter. SampleTester updates its usage documentation and rejects unexpected positional arguments.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b2c34

The splitter test workflow changes are sound for normal builds. A failed goal update can leave the goal files incomplete until they are restored from version control, so this is a minor follow-up rather than a blocker.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b2c34

The changes are limited to local build and test workflows, with no demonstrated new remote access or privilege boundary. The main risk is that an interrupted goal refresh can leave regression baselines partially replaced. Ordinary test generation now preserves those baselines, and the standard workflow isolates splitter generation in separate Java processes.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The explicit goal-refresh transition deletes all existing goal files before individually writing replacements, then writes the generated test source. A deletion, read, write, or interruption failure can leave these artifacts inconsistent. The Make retry regenerates rather than restoring the prior set. This is a low-impact local rollback concern, not a demonstrated security vulnerability; ordinary generation is now non-destructive, and tracked goals remain recoverable through version control.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the invoking build user's local goal directory, generated test source, and process-local splitter state. These entrypoints do not demonstrate new tenant, service, data-store, or environment-wide authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Ordinary test-source generation now preserves expected-output baselines. Replacement requires an explicit update flag, and missing required goals fail assertions rather than being silently accepted. SampleTester's configuration and logging options remain existing local capabilities; the added positional-argument check does not grant additional authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A failed refresh can disrupt baseline consistency, but missing required goals cause test failure rather than an observed fail-open security outcome. Separate JVM invocations also contain shared naming and configuration state within each test process; external same-JVM embedding is not covered by that isolation.

…junit target dependences

SplitterFactoryTestUpdater no longer overwrites existing goal files, so
SplitterFactoryTest does not compare SplitterFactory's output against itself.
The junit target builds SplitterFactoryTest.class only after Daikon.class,
and SplitterFactoryTest.class is rebuilt when Daikon changes.
