Fjalar omits a formal parameter whose location it cannot read (validLoc == 0) from the .dtrace file. But the test was inside if (stackBaseAddr) in visitVariableGroup, so it did not apply when Fjalar writes the .decls file, the --dump-var-names file, or the disambig file, or when it harvests objects. The .decls file therefore declared variables that the .dtrace file never contained. With this pull request, the test does not depend on stackBaseAddr, so the .decls and .dtrace files declare the same variables.

This is a user-visible change: a formal parameter that has a location list (common at -O2), no DW_AT_location, or a location in registers is no longer declared. A --var-list-file or disambig file that names such a parameter no longer matches it.

New test valgrind/fjalar/tests/omitted-params-test.sh, run by make fjalar-test, checks that a parameter split across registers and a parameter in a register appear in neither file. It fails without this change.

This is one of the pull requests split from #90; #90 and #95 depend on it. The Kvasir flex tests declare register parameters, which this pull request omits from the .decls file and #90 then traces, so this pull request should be landed together with #90 and codespecs/daikon#900.

The changes record unsupported DWARF operations in formal-parameter locations, propagate that status through variable extraction and traversal, and update variable-location evaluation. A regression test checks declaration and trace output for parameters in split registers and a floating-point register.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 29692

Readable register parameters can disappear from declarations and traces. Preserve their validity before merging, and make the test confirm that split is instrumented.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 29692

The change consistently filters unreadable parameters and reduces evaluation of unsupported locations. No introduced security weakness was established, but malformed debug-data handling and concurrent use of shared value storage remain incompletely assessed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A crafted location expression requires control over debug information consumed for an analyzed target. The inspected outcome remains the existing in-process location evaluation and output path. Added constant encodings do not establish new tenant, service, credential, or environment authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The support predicate classifies individual operations, not complete expression validity. Bounded fixed-width reads can accept partial operands, and supported dereference operations still depend on valid preceding location state. Newly harvested constants inherit these limitations, but equivalent constant-address and dereference capabilities existed in the base; an introduced security escalation was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new exclusion state is enforced before expression evaluation and output callbacks, including validity-repair paths. Normal two-pass debug-info processing initializes entries for the harvesting pass rather than appending location state during both passes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Register values now reside in the owning VariableEntry instead of a loop-local temporary, and are refreshed before synchronous traversal. Entries retain their existing list-cleanup lifecycle. Concurrent reuse and callbacks retaining pointers beyond traversal remain coverage gaps, not demonstrated regressions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider validating operand completeness and producer-before-consumer ordering for entire location expressions, using the existing exclusion state to reject malformed expressions before any dereference. This would harden an existing debug-data trust boundary rather than address an established PR security regression.

…value bugs

* location_op_is_supported() is the single definition of which DWARF ops
Fjalar's evaluator can apply; decode_location_expression uses it to
flag unsupported formal-parameter locations. It also rejects
DW_OP_reg*/DW_OP_breg* for registers that get_reg cannot read.
* A location expression longer than MAX_DWARF_OPS marks the parameter
unsupported instead of failing an assertion.
* A parameter with an unsupported location gets no location_expression,
and the `this` and main argc/argv fix-ups no longer force it valid.
* The value of a DW_OP_reg* location is stored in VariableEntry.regValue
instead of in a local variable whose lifetime ends before it is read.
* Remove an unused copy of the evaluator from fjalar_runtime.c.

Copy validity for supported register locations.

When a formal parameter has a readable DW_OP_reg* location, harvesting sets paramPtr->valid_loc to true. extractOneFormalParameterVar copies that flag only for LT_FP_OFFSET. The new visitVariableGroup guard therefore skips the register parameter from declarations and traces.

Copy valid_loc independently of the FP-offset metadata. Keep locationType as NO_LOCATION for register expressions.

Assert that Fjalar instruments split.

The AWK programs emit only variable records. Since omitted-params.goal contains no split records, the comparison can pass if Fjalar emits no split program point. Add independent checks for split in both the declarations and trace files before comparing variables.

…set and an unsupported op

* visitVariableGroup reads a variable from guest memory, and a register
has no address, A and V bits, or DynComp tags, so DW_OP_reg* is not a
supported location op. Remove VariableEntry.regValue, which pointed
  the variable at tool memory.
* omitted-params-test.sh rewrites a parameter's location to
  "DW_OP_fbreg -8; DW_OP_stack_value", which Fjalar would otherwise
treat as a valid frame offset.
…decls file

Unsupported-op detection and the removal of the unused evaluator in
fjalar_runtime.c move to separate pull requests.
