[MSD-880][fix] GUI: race condition could cause pyramidal image update failure - #3641
Conversation

🟡 Changes recommended
Shared render metadata still permits incorrect positioning, and the regression test can miss conversion failures.

What changed in this PR
Simplifies tiled-image metadata handling to prevent display failures during concurrent stream updates.
Changes:
- Computes tiled-image geometry before RGBA conversion.
- Uses stored canvas metadata when drawing tiles.
- Adds a threaded image-update regression test.

Add parameter and return annotations to these new methods and nested functions. Add docstrings to
setUp,tearDown,_update_images,draw_merged_recorded, andupdater. The class and the other new helper functions already have docstrings. As per coding guidelines, “always use type hints for function parameters and return types” and “Include docstrings for all functions and classes.”Also applies to: 467-467, 516-516, 520-520, 527-527, 541-541

capture the exception and append it to errors instead of discarding it, so
redraw failures outside _draw_merged_images are included in the test assertion.

In case of display pyramidal image (ie, a tuple-of-tuple of DataArray),
the metadata computation was overly complicated. It used twice in a row getCenterOfTiles():
once in miccanvas and once in canvas. This actually made things worse,
because the second call to getCenterOfTiles() excpected to get the
MD_ metadata on the first tile, while typically in the canvas, the
metadata is a different format (dc_*). To workaround it, the original
metadata was also set on the canvas tile... but if the stream was
updated while the (previous) image was being drawn, a race condition could
happen where the metadata didn't contain the dc_ metadata for a short
time. This prevented the image to be displayed (for that frame, and
immediately after it'd be updated again).
=> Remove all this extra layer of complexity, and do something much
more similar to the standard single image case.
