established legacy-compatible default when building the key; compute the
complete key before appending to self.entries or updating self._entry_keys, so
both collections change only after key construction succeeds.

Description
Summary
Spike for batch assign ticket #2956 section 5 (optimise batch-assign runtime, currently ~35-50min per evening-pipeline run).
Found and fixed an O(n²) performance bug in
digital-land-python'sLookupsclass — not a config repo issue, and much higher-leverage than any parallelisation we could do there.Root cause
Lookups.validate_entry()andLookups.save_csv()both do membership checks against plain Python lists instead of sets:validate_entry()linear-scansself.entriesfor an existing(prefix, organisation, reference)match, once peradd_entry()call.save_csv()'s entity-number generator doesstr(n) not in entity_values, whereentity_valuesis also a list. Both scale with the existing
lookup.csvsize, not just the new resource, so cost isO(new_entities × existing_entries).tree-preservation-orderandlisted-buildinghave 523,324 and 532,879 existing rows respectively — an order of magnitude bigger than every other dataset in the config repo (next largest meaningfully-processed one is ~100k) — which is why these two collections structurally dominate every single evening-pipeline run's runtime, regardless of which resources happen to be in that day's batch.Profiling a single resource (6,983 new entities) confirmed the split:
copy_treeget_resource_unidentified_lookupslookups.load_csvadd_entryloop (6,983 calls)get_max_entitysave_csvpipeline_run(actual transform)Fix
digital_land/pipeline/main.py,Lookupsclass:self._entry_keys, a set mirroring(prefix, organisation, reference)for every entry, maintained insideadd_entry().validate_entry()now checkskey in self._entry_keys(O(1)) instead of scanningself.entries(O(n)).save_csv()'sentity_valueschanged from a list to a set - same membership-only usage, now O(1).No behaviour change: both structures are only ever used for membership testing, never iterated/indexed/sliced elsewhere.
Verification
82 existing tests pass across every file touching
Lookups/assign_entities(tests/unit/test_pipeline.py,tests/integration/test_assign_entities.py,tests/integration/pipeline/test_main.py,tests/acceptance/test_assign_entities.py,tests/acceptance/test_add_endpoints_and_lookups.py).Real production data, end-to-end, same resource (6,983 new entities,
tree-preservation-order) run through the full assign → validate → promote path before and after the fix:lookup.csvchangeentity-organisation.csvchangeThe two runs' resulting file diffs are byte-for-byte identical - confirming the fix changes only performance, not output.
