test(amd): separate renderer startup and bound case costs - #1672
Night 52 reported three case-budget overages: renderer startup was charged to AssetSceneLoad, that sweep repeatedly loaded path-based models, and the two evidence cases outgrew their default layers. Closes#1668.
- first GPU case = process renderer startup + case work+ process renderer init = separate XML property and report line+ case budget = case work, with a required reason for exact-case overrides
Keep initialization lazy. Retain assets and path-based static/animated models across the 141-scene sweep in a caller-owned cache, cleared before manager shutdown and deferred GPU deletion. Default serializer callers retain their existing behavior. Move the unchanged VSM cut-over case to L8, and visit every acceptance camera on all three raster paths consecutively to reuse coat geometry. Overages remain warnings.
Logs: build-cached/baseline-1668.log/xml, build-cached/final-gl-1668.log/xml, and build-cached/final-gl-durations-1668.txt. Final GL run: 18/18 passed, 0 over budget, process renderer init 1.206 s. Baseline init was 6.186 s, so startup warming is excluded from the scene-load improvement. The init property is charged only to the triggering case; the suite total still includes it.
Profiling showed acceptance spent 53.015 s rendering, 1.141 s capturing/validating the PNGs and 2.781 s loading. Camera grouping retained all 15 captures/360 frames while reducing coat-cache builds 41 → 16 and evictions 99 → 14. Sponza texture loads across the sandbox sweep fell 528 → 148. First-time virtual-mesh builds for distinct assets remain covered.
The AMD proof run at 1657b23ac passed 18/18, with 0 over budget: scene-load body 27.0 / 30 s, acceptance 98.2 / 120 s, VSM 54.3 / 120 s. Its report prints process renderer init: 109.138 s separately. Night 52's corresponding values were 96.6 s including startup, 132.9 s and 50.7 s. Raw proof: build-cached/amd-proof-1668.log and the run's uploaded test results.

No feature, component-field or persisted-format changes; the optional batch cache is used only by the loose-scene test, and existing pack/save-game/runtime callers do not supply it
The VSM case body is unchanged apart from its fixture name; its new Evidence suite matches CTest's heavy filter. The catalogue classifies it as L8. No golden images were changed. The copied fixture's shared helpers have inline linkage.
Merge Danger
Door: Two-way. No persisted data or schema migration.
Blast Radius: Tests/loading. The opt-in batch retains model data until case exit; its ownership/release contract and following-suite behavior are tested. Ordinary serializer loads use the previous path.

3923af527 fix(docs): avoid same-head reopen cancellations at the PR exit gate — the close-event cleanup cancelled the initial PR runs, leaving 21 historical CANCELLED contexts beside successful replacements. Guidance now says label before the next head update, after existing CI is terminal.
ce4a43293 fix(test): label acceptance capture timing accurately — CodeRabbit correctly noted that the post-render interval includes readback, PNG writing and image checks; output now calls it capture+validation. Release rebuild and an isolated acceptance run passed; review-label-1668.log/xml has all 15 corrected camera/path lines.

Where I'd look hardest
SceneSerializer.h/.cpp and AssetSceneLoadTest.cpp — borrowed cache lifetime, resolved-path keys, normal-call fallback, and release before manager/context teardown.
generate_test_catalogue.py — init subtraction without losing suite time, exact-case override precedence, and warning-only exit.
FoliageCostTestFixture.h and FoliageVsmCardCutoverEvidenceTest.cpp — mechanical extraction preserves all arms/poses while classification and CTest routing follow the new suite.
What I verified, and how — Matrix above; the cache regression fails without retention/reuse or with leaked references. Both independent implementation reviews found 0 findings.
Least confident about — Nothing within the requested scope: the AMD run, batch-cache lifetime regression and following-renderer checks cover the changed paths, with the shared init helper also exercised on Vulkan.

Changes: Test timing and budget reporting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Measure process renderer startup OloEngine/tests/ProcessRendererInit.h, OloEngine/tests/AssetSceneLoadTest.cpp, OloEngine/tests/Rendering/*
Tests use a shared helper to initialize the process renderer and record its startup duration. The acceptance-scene test records load, render, and capture-validation durations, plus groom statistics.
Report case body time against budgets OloEngine/tests/scripts/*, .github/workflows/*, docs/testing.md, docs/process/task-loop.md
The duration report subtracts accepted renderer startup time from case time, supports validated exact-case budget overrides, and retains startup time in the suite total. Catalogue tests cover these rules. Workflow and testing documentation describe report-only warnings; task-loop instructions describe label timing and cancelled check contexts.
Shared scene asset cache
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and use the shared cache OloEngine/src/OloEngine/Scene/SceneSerializer.*
SceneSerializer accepts an optional AssetLoadCache for model and animated-model references. Without a shared cache, it retains serializer-local caching behavior.
Reuse assets across the scene sweep OloEngine/tests/AssetSceneLoadTest.cpp, OloEngine/tests/Rendering/AnimatedModelDedupTest.cpp, docs/testing.md
The sandbox scene sweep shares a cache across scenes and clears it before asset-manager shutdown. Tests check reuse across serializer lifetimes and cache release.
Foliage rendering evidence
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Build shared foliage measurement support OloEngine/tests/Rendering/PropertyTests/FoliageCostTestFixture.h
The shared fixture provides foliage scene setup, measurement controls, timing and memory collection, traversal poses, and reporting helpers.
A dedicated test compares VSM card settings across rendering paths and traversal poses. It captures image and timing evidence, checks shadow-factor differences, and replaces the prior cut-over test implementation.

Explanation
The PR meets the coding requirements in #1668. It records lazy renderer initialization separately and retains it in the suite total. It reuses a caller-owned asset cache across the 141-scene sweep and releases it before teardown. It moves the scene-load case out of unit, keeps all VSM arms, poses, and raster paths in L8, and gives the acceptance case a reasoned 120-second override. The duration tests cover arithmetic, validation, override precedence, and warning-only exit.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Most changes support #1668, including the serializer cache, timing helper, duration tests, VSM fixture extraction, acceptance grouping, and related documentation. The updates to docs/process/task-loop.md and .github/workflows/asan.yml document PR label timing and close/reopen cancellation cleanup. These changes do not implement test-budget accounting, test coverage, or renderer behavior for #1668.
Resolution
Remove the PR-process guidance changes from this pull request, or move them to a separate pull request. Keep the acceptance timing documentation change and other changes that directly support #1668.

Reviewed the PR diff with independent Standards and Spec passes, followed by the task-loop final spec review against the complete verification matrix. Both reviewers also re-reviewed 1657b23ac..ce4a43293 and passed the follow-up delta.
Findings: two follow-up issues, both fixed: 3923af527 corrects same-head reopen guidance after the observed CI cancellation trap; ce4a43293 accurately labels the inclusive capture/validation interval identified by CodeRabbit. The independent code/spec reviews found no further issues.
Dismissed: none.
Verification: 18/18 Release GL tests in one process; 5/5 targeted Debug tests after a successful Debug build; 3/3 Vulkan device-gated smoke tests exercised; 2/2 CPU-only tests with no renderer init; 6/6 duration-report tests.
AMD proof:40685906301, 18/18 passed, zero cases over budget. Scene-load body 27.0/30 s, acceptance 98.2/120 s, VSM 54.3/120 s. Process renderer init is separately reported at 109.138 s.
All 141 scenes, all 15 acceptance views/360 frames, and every VSM path/pose/control remain covered. The caller-owned cache's actual reuse and release are tested, including following renderer suites.
Follow-up proof: Release rebuild passed; the acceptance case passed alone with all 15 corrected timing lines, and the moved VSM case passed alone. Subsequent commits change only process instructions and a metric label; the AMD-tested workload, assertions and cache behavior are unchanged.

Summary
Night 52 reported three case-budget overages: renderer startup was charged to AssetSceneLoad, that sweep repeatedly loaded path-based models, and the two evidence cases outgrew their default layers. Closes #1668.
