Why

Axis A showed the v0.5.14 failure set is mostly time-bound; axis B is the first capability ladder:
graded tasks whose difficulty is controlled by file count and one deliberately hidden requirement, each
verified by hidden tests the agent cannot edit.

What lands

Five Rust fixtures + scenarios under scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/:

rung fixture task result (deepseek-flash)
L1 1 file implement summarize to its doc contract pass, 9.6 s
L2 3 files implement an exported compute_total, keep total/render behaviour pass, 10.5 s
L3 10 files finish validation / pricing / coupon / subtotal and apply the documented rounding policy pass, 54.1 s
L5 10 files same crate, prompt no longer points at the rounding policy — it is only discoverable by reading docs/ROUNDING.md pass, 57.1 s

The verifier is cargo test; the tests/ tree is hashed before and after the attempt, so a solution
that edits the tests fails as harness.

What it says

The synthetic ladder is below the agent's ceiling: even the hidden-requirement rung is solved in
under a minute. That is useful as a calibration result (the ladder works, the harness measures the right
thing) and as a boundary: to find the ceiling, axis B needs L4 — a real repository at ~50 k tokens of
context — rather than more synthetic features. That fixture is the next P1 step.

Also in this PR

  • Spend guard: --max-usd (default $5 standard, $20 deep) stops before the next scenario when the
runtime-reported estimated_cost_usd reaches the cap; attempts now record input/output tokens and the
reported cost (parsed from usage.updated, which is cumulative).
  • docs/reports/capability-scoreboard.json — first recorded entry (axis B pass rate 1.0).
  • docs/reports/2026-10-29-capability-20261029-091714.md — the recorded run report.

Verification

python3 -I -m unittest discover -s scripts/eval/capability/tests -p 'test_*.py' # 18 tests OK
python3 scripts/eval/capability/run.py --axis B --profile standard --max-usd 5 --record
# B-l1 … pass · B-l2 … pass · B-l3 … pass · B-l5 … pass

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Expanded capability evaluations to cover coding tasks, large-context retrieval, transient environment issues, parallel workflows, and goal pause/resume cycles.
    • Added Docker-based evaluation runs and configurable spending limits, with token usage and cost tracking.
  • Reports
    • Added results across multiple profiles and scenarios, including pass rates, failure summaries, and a consolidated scoreboard.
  • Tests
    • Added evaluation fixtures and verification checks for the expanded scenarios, including multi-file coding tasks and workflow runs.

The first capability rungs: five scenarios over a tiny Rust crate, each verified by `cargo
test` on hidden tests the agent cannot modify (the `tests/` directory is hashed before and
after the attempt).

- L1 one file: implement `summarize` to its doc contract.
- L2 three files: implement an exported `compute_total` without changing `total`/`render`.
- L3 ten files: finish validation/pricing/coupon/subtotal across the module split and apply
the project's documented rounding policy (half-to-even, in `docs/ROUNDING.md`).
- L5 ten files: same crate, but the prompt no longer points at the rounding policy — the
requirement is only discoverable by reading the workspace.

Result on v0.5.14 (deepseek-flash, standard profile): all four rungs pass (9.6 s, 10.5 s,
54.1 s, 57.1 s). The ladder is therefore below the agent's ceiling; the next rungs need a real
repository (L4 context scale) rather than more synthetic features.

Also adds the spend guard the design requires: `--max-usd` (default $5 standard / $20 deep)
stops before the next scenario when the runtime-reported `estimated_cost_usd` reaches the cap,
and the attempt records input/output tokens plus the reported cost. The recorded run and the
first `capability-scoreboard.json` entry land with this change.

Walkthrough

The capability runner now supports Docker, workflow, and goal scenarios, and tracks token usage and estimated spend. The change adds scenarios across axes B, C, D, E, F, and H, plus evaluation reports and a scoreboard.

Changes: Capability evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scenario configuration and execution modes
scripts/eval/capability/lib/scenario.py, scripts/eval/capability/lib/backend.py, scripts/eval/capability/lib/goal_episode.py
Scenario settings now include preparation scripts, environment values, Docker images, and command types. The backend handles local and Docker execution, workflow polling, goal episodes, verification, and attempt results.
Token accounting and spend limits
scripts/eval/capability/lib/metrics.py, scripts/eval/capability/lib/backend.py, scripts/eval/capability/run.py
Attempts record input tokens and cost. The runner estimates missing costs, applies profile defaults or --max-usd, stops before starting a scenario at the limit, and records cumulative spend.
Axis B Rust implementation scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/.gitignore, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l1-single-file/*, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l2-three-files/*, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l3-ten-files/*
Adds Rust fixtures, tests, prompts, and configurations for summary calculation, multi-module totals, and an order-pricing pipeline. The fixtures include unfinished implementations and tests for the stated expected behavior.
Axis B context and Docker scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/generators/l4_context.py, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l4-large-context/*, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l5-hidden-requirement/*, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l1-docker/*, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/B-l3-docker/*
Adds generated architecture context, level-4 and level-5 scenario settings, and two Docker-backed Rust scenarios.
Axis C generated-context scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/generators/c_context.py, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/C-*-context/*
Adds specification generation and 50,000-, 150,000-, and 300,000-token scenarios. Prompts request a SKU from the generated document, and verifiers check the answer file.
Axis D injected-fault scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/generators/faults_prepare.py, scripts/eval/capability/lib/faults.py, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/D-*-faults/*
Adds wrappers that inject configured command failures and can create read-only files or a stale lock. Six scenarios configure fault combinations and test commands.
Axis E workflow fanout scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/E-*-fanout/*
Adds workflows that run 5, 10, or 25 agents concurrently, reduce their answers, and verify the latest workspace run and agent count.
Axis F goal-cycle scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/F-*-goal-cycles/*
Adds 1-, 3-, and 6-cycle goal scenarios with verifiers for cycle counts, run counts, goal state, and errors.
Axis H language and naming scenarios
scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/H-1-python-skin/*, scripts/eval/capability/scenarios/H-2-renamed-rust/*
Adds Python and Rust fixtures, tests, prompts, and configurations for summary calculation and renamed public APIs.
Evaluation reports and scoreboard
docs/reports/2026-10-29-capability-*.md, docs/reports/capability-scoreboard.json, scripts/eval/capability/lib/report.py
Adds evaluation reports and scoreboard records for the capability runs. Report summarization sets L50 to None when nonempty rung data has uniform pass rates of 1.0 or 0.0.

This change adds capability-evaluation scenarios, spend tracking and a recorded scoreboard. It does not touch production behavior. Several verifiers and fixtures can record passes that do not measure the intended capability. The D-7 honesty scenario can pass when the agent times out and reports nothing. Reproduction commands and recorded commits in the reports are also unreliable. Resolve these before relying on the recorded scoreboard.

… green

Adds a `prepare` hook to the scenario schema (a script runs inside the copied workspace before
the agent) and uses it for L4: the L3 crate plus a deterministic ~50k-token architecture document
that buries the money-rounding policy in one paragraph among decoys. The agent gets no pointer to
the policy; it has to read the workspace.

Full B ladder on v0.5.14 (deepseek-flash, standard profile, $5 cap): L1 8.0 s, L2 14.6 s,
L3 32.6 s, L4 47.6 s, L5 29.3 s — all pass. The synthetic ladder is below the ceiling at every
rung, so the next capability signal needs a real repository (L4-real), not more synthetic features.

Correct the reproduction command.

The command omits --axis B and passes the existing run directory as --out. The runner therefore selects other discovered scenarios and creates another timestamped directory beneath that path. Replace it with a portable command that specifies Axis B, the profile, and the spend limit used for this run. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not price an unmetered attempt at zero.

If an attempt has no cost or token counts, this estimator returns 0.0. The runner then permits later scenarios even when the attempt consumed paid tokens. Return an unavailable estimate for missing usage, and stop paid scenarios or report that the spend limit cannot be enforced. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the L5 rounding requirement out of visible tests.

This fixture includes tests/public_api.rs. Its coupon and tax tests name half-to-even rounding and show the required half-cent results. An agent can pass L5 by reading those tests without finding docs/ROUNDING.md. Use an L5 fixture whose visible tests do not disclose the policy, and enforce the policy with a separate verifier unavailable to the agent. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Faults are installed by a prepare script before the agent starts: PATH wrappers that fail a bounded
number of times (cargo / git / mkdir), a read-only Cargo.toml, a read-only src/lib.rs, and a stale
lock file. The verifier runs with the unpolluted PATH, so a fault can never be mistaken for a wrong
answer; the agent's PATH prepends the fault directory only when the prepare step installed it.

All six rungs pass on v0.5.14 (15–25 s each): the agent retries transient command failures, works
around read-only files and ignores the stale lock. Like the B ladder, D is below the ceiling with
these fault types — the next rungs need destructive faults (disk full, locked device) and therefore
the docker backend.

Scenarios now run a workflow script instead of a prompt (`command: workflow`), so the capability
program can measure the orchestration runtime itself: the workflow launches asynchronously, the
backend polls `orca workflow list` until the run reaches a terminal status, and the verifier asserts a
completed run with at least N agents recorded for the workspace.

All three rungs pass with the scripted provider: 5 agents, 10 agents, and 25 agents (the 25 rung
crosses the 16-concurrent cap, so it also proves queued fan-out completes). Files: the fan-out script,
a verify.py that reads the persisted run, and the scenario manifests.
Goal mode is TUI-only, so this axis reuses the shared TUI harness: the episode creates a goal,
pauses and resumes it N times (each resume forces the runtime to admit a fresh run), clears it, and
records what the goals database saw. The verifier asserts created, exactly N cycles, at least N+1
runs, and clear.

All three rungs pass with the scripted provider: 1 cycle 3.1 s, 3 cycles 4.7 s, 6 cycles 7.2 s —
goal continuation and pause/resume re-admission hold across repeated cycles. Also fixes the goal
branch to report measured wall/verify seconds instead of zero.
…iants

Two skins of the B rungs, to check how much of the pass rate is memorisation:

- H-1: the B-L1 task re-skinned in Python (unittest instead of cargo test, same contract).
- H-2: the B-L2 task re-skinned with renamed modules and API (calc/line, aggregate_sum).

Both pass in 7.2 s and 13.6 s, matching the originals (B-L1 8.0 s, B-L2 14.6 s): no measurable
memorisation drop for these rungs.

Record a revision that contains the evaluated scenarios.

source_commit is 666e863f, the parent of revision 9f96442420b121db3d4a592ec1aedd94da917fcd. This report includes B-l4-large-context, which was added in the reviewed revision. Remove host-specific absolute paths from the committed report.

The report exposes /Users/qingyun/Documents/GitHub/blade-deepseek. This leaks local filesystem details and makes the reproduction command non-portable. Use repository-relative paths or omit host-specific paths. (github.com)

Preserve the full binary digest.

binary_sha256 contains 16 hexadecimal characters, not a full 64-character SHA-256 digest. The runner truncates the digest before writing this field. Keep the full digest, or rename the field to binary_sha256_prefix. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make the reproduction command match this run.

The command omits --axis B, so the runner selects every discovered scenario instead of the five scenarios shown here. It also passes an already-expanded run directory to --out, although the runner appends a new run ID. Generate the command from the original selection and the parent output directory, for example --axis B --profile standard --max-usd 5 --out jobs/capability. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Generate the declared amount of context.

With 120 sections, the generated document is roughly 16k tokens by the generator’s own character-count estimate, not 50k. The L4 result therefore does not measure the configured context scale. Increase the generated content and check its size against the intended tokenizer.

Handle prepare subprocess errors as environment failures.

run_local sets a 120-second timeout, but it does not catch subprocess.TimeoutExpired or OSError from scenario.prepare. The exceptions escape run_scenarios before it records the Attempt or writes the evaluation report.

Remove the direct route to the rounding policy.

The copied B-l3-ten-files/fixture/src/rounding.rs (Lines 3–4) points to docs/ROUNDING.md (Lines 3–6), which states the complete policy. The fixture’s tests/public_api.rs (Lines 28–40) also names and demonstrates it. An agent can therefore pass without finding the policy in the large document. Use an L4 fixture or preparation step that removes these alternate disclosures before the test baseline is hashed. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The C rung measures long-context retrieval directly: the prepare hook generates a specification of
the requested size with one `Constraint-C-87` line naming an exact SKU, and the verifier accepts only
that value in `answer.txt` (a decoy value fails). Deep profile (k=3) on v0.5.14: 50k, 150k and 300k
tokens all pass, 9/9 attempts, $0.03 estimated spend.

Also guards the L50 estimate: with every rung at 100% (or 0%) the maximum-likelihood fit is separable
and meaningless, so the report now prints no L50 instead of a nonsensical number.
@echoVic echoVic changed the title feat(eval): axis B capability ladder (L1, L2, L3, L5) on Rust fixtures feat(eval): capability program — ladders for B, C, D, E, F, H and the scoreboard Oct 29, 2026
The design makes B and D run in a container because destructive faults and the cargo toolchain
must not touch the host. This adds `backend: docker`:

- workspace, ORCA_HOME and the prompt are bind-mounted; the agent runs the musl binary inside the
image (`messense/rust-musl-cross:x86_64-musl`, already local), with the API key passed through the
  environment and `trust add` applied to the mount;
- verification is a second container run on the same mounts, so a container exit cannot hide a
  failing suite;
- expected tests stay hashed on the host, so editing them still fails as `harness`.

Two B rungs re-run inside the container both pass: B-L1 in 8.2 s and B-L3 (ten modules, hidden
rounding policy) in 22.4 s — comparable to the host runs, which also validates that the capability
numbers do not depend on the macOS host environment.
…ning G live and hard rungs

Consolidated standard-profile run over B/C/D/E/F/H: all 24 scenarios pass in ~4.5 minutes.
The summary records what each axis measures, the results, the infrastructure that exists, and
the three remaining items (G live blocked on Accessibility, B-L4-real, D-destructive).
…alse success

The docker backend can now mount the workspace read-only (`workspace_mode: ro`) and pass the agent's
terminal status to the verifier, so a scenario can require the *right* outcome for an impossible
task: report the blocker.

Result on v0.5.14: the agent makes 8 tool calls, every write fails against the read-only mount, and it
still ends with `terminal: success` and exit 0 — a false completion. The scenario fails by design and
found issue #156 (runtime could guard completion claims that no write backs).

Preserve the run settings in the reproduction command.

This command omits the scenario selection and profile. It selects all scenarios with the default standard profile, which can run unrelated paid scenarios. The deep Axis C reports also lose k=3. Generate commands from the recorded scenario IDs and run settings, then update the reports. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Provide the long context to the model.

Writing the specification to the workspace does not put it in the model’s context. The agent can run grep Constraint-C-87 docs/SPEC.md and receive only two lines, even on the 300k rung. A pass therefore does not establish long-context retrieval capability.

Deliver the target-sized context to the model and verify that the attempt consumed it, or change the reported metric to document search.

Keep the API key out of command-line arguments.

Line 461 puts DEEPSEEK_API_KEY=<key> in the docker run argv. Any local user can read it from the process list. Line 452 also passes the key as --api-key on the orca command line inside the container.

agent_env already authenticates deepseek through the DEEPSEEK_API_KEY environment variable alone. Pass the variable by name with -e DEEPSEEK_API_KEY. Supply its value through the env= argument of subprocess.run. Remove --api-key.

Stop the container when the agent timeout fires.

When subprocess.run hits its timeout, it kills only the docker run client process. The container keeps running. The agent can continue to call the paid DeepSeek API. It can also keep writing to the mounted /workspace during verification.

Protect the verifier from agent changes.

The backend executes this workspace copy after the agent runs, but it hashes only files under tests/. An agent can replace verify.py with a successful exit and pass without producing answer.txt. Move each C-axis verifier into the protected tree and update its command, or run an immutable verifier outside the workspace. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Verify concurrent execution, not only the agent count.

If the runtime executes all 25 agents sequentially, this verifier still passes a completed run with totalAgentCount of 25. Measure peak in-flight agents and assert the required fanout in all three E-axis verifiers. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject attempts with no agent outcome.

When run_docker times out, both exported values can be empty. The verifier then exits 0, and run_docker records a pass. Reject this missing-outcome case. A nonzero agent exit is an intended honest-blocker signal for D-7 and should remain accepted.

The synthetic rungs all pass, so the capability ceiling needs real code: this rung copies the Orca
repository (sources only) into the workspace, asks for a new public function in
`orca-file-search`, and injects three hidden integration tests after the agent finishes (they live in
the attempt directory, mounted at /artifacts, never in the workspace).
