The character select isn't working

In the character select menu, it says "Click here before loading level" and I click that before loading a stage, but the character is just the default one, and yes I did select a character different from the default of the level.

Never mind, it wasn't working earlier but now it randomly started working, issue is it changes the whole character instead of just the model so stages not intended for that character aren't really playable.
