Behavior

The native API profile can acquire and sleep before Home Assistant subscribes. Wait asynchronously for a state subscriber before acquisition, for at most api_connection_timeout (default 10 seconds). A logs-only client does not release the wait. Offline wakes still acquire once and complete their normal sleep cycle.

The wait starts after sensor/display setup and yields to Wi-Fi setup. Readiness is best effort, not a delivery acknowledgement; disconnecting after readiness does not restart acquisition. The core and MQTT profile remain unchanged.

Verification

  • Five scenarios compile and run the exact installed ESPHome 2026.9.0 wait action, API condition and subscription lookup selected by the actual YAML: early/late subscriber, logs-only client, no Home Assistant, and disconnect after readiness.
  • After merging fork V2R1 at 581d4ed: 47 repository tests pass in the system Python environment (the pinned API class suite is skipped there); its five tests pass separately with the exact ESPHome virtualenv. The combined virtualenv suite lacks Cairo, so the graphical-generator tests use their existing system environment.
  • API and MQTT synthetic configurations validate. The complete local ESP32-S2 API firmware build passes with ESPHome 2026.9.0 after the base merge (api-build-merged.log, exit 0). No device, shared builder or live Home Assistant connection is used.
  • Semantic diff, line endings and whitespace reviewed. Rollback: revert source commit 8193896.

AI assistance

Codex implemented and reviewed the change, checked the pinned implementation and ran isolated C++ action tests. The tests do not establish real network delivery. docs/api-wake-window.md states the limits.

CodeRabbit review

Pending review on the final head. Beads: infra-3rr.59. Also addresses the native-API readiness finding in sync PR #12.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • API-based devices now wait for a state subscription before starting acquisition, up to a configurable 10-second timeout.
    • Wi-Fi setup continues during this wait.
    • Logs-only API connections do not trigger acquisition; acquisition runs once after a valid subscription or timeout.
    • Battery state and low-battery mode determine whether the optional network wait is skipped.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance covering startup timing, cached state delivery, offline/disconnect behavior, and validation scenarios.

Walkthrough

The API profile now samples battery state and conditionally waits for a state-subscribed API connection or a 10-second timeout before acquisition. Tests cover battery thresholds, subscription timing, logs-only clients, timeouts, and disconnects. Documentation describes the behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 80997

The API change is mergeable with owner awareness, but it must pass a device canary and runtime checks before fleet rollout.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 04474

The change preserves the existing encrypted API and sleep safeguards and limits readiness waiting through a configurable timeout, defaulting to 10 seconds. No introduced security weakness was established. Real-device scheduling, connection interruption, and recovery remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new client-controlled influence is readiness timing on an API-profile device: a state subscription can release acquisition early, whereas absence of a qualifying subscription takes the timeout path. The changed YAML grants no additional cross-device or management authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Readiness distinguishes state subscribers from logs-only clients, not Home Assistant from every other API client. It remains behind the existing encrypted API configuration and is a scheduling predicate, not a new authentication decision or delivery guarantee.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failure containment retains a configured readiness timeout followed by the existing sleep and display-recovery workflow. Evidence does not establish real disconnect cancellation, interruption safety, repeated-invocation behavior, or terminal cleanup on hardware: the harness clears a subscription flag while substituting a counter for acquisition and uses no network connection.

88-91: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Remove the synthetic Wi-Fi result, but keep the lifecycle order.

wifi_setup_reached is always true, and the harness does not execute Wi-Fi setup. The five-second subprocess timeout still detects a wait.play_complex() call that blocks the scenario past the timeout. Keep wait.play_complex() before wait.setup() because this covers an action started before component setup.

♻️ Suggested fix
   wait.play_complex(); // YAML on_boot priority 399 starts here.
- // Returning proves the wait does not hold up Wi-Fi setup at priority 250.
-  const bool wifi_setup_reached = true;
   wait.setup(); // Must preserve a wait started before component setup.
...
-  std::cout << acquired_at << ' ' << acquisitions << ' ' << wifi_setup_reached << '\n';
+  std::cout << acquired_at << ' ' << acquisitions << '\n';

Update the expected tuples from (acquired_at, acquisitions, 1) to (acquired_at, acquisitions).

This PR verifies the subscriber wait with pinned ESPHome configuration validation, a full local firmware build, and offline tests. It does not claim a device canary or live Home Assistant verification. This PR lifecycle authorization covers fork delivery only; no live device, NAS, or Home Assistant action is authorized here. The canary remains a separate operational validation before deploying this API profile.
