Behavior

Retained mode changes could leave older asynchronous work running. Maintenance OFF during battery/time admission could sleep without fresh plant readings. Storage changes during an unfinished refresh could publish stale state or leave acquisition running. A repeated Maintenance ON or a successful OTA could also let the old watchdog start an unwanted refresh.

Cancel the previous cycle's child scripts when a new command starts preparation. Handle OFF before Maintenance becomes active. Cancel the old watchdog before renewal and successful OTA cleanup. Reject infinite battery readings at the Maintenance admission boundary. Ignore echoed Maintenance OFF after rejection or exit, and ignore Storage commands whose desired state is unchanged. This preserves the rejection result and avoids duplicate acquisition cycles.

Verification

  • Command: python3 -B -m unittest discover -s tests -v; pinned ESPHome Python runs test_api_boot.py separately.
  • Expected result: actual package YAML and compiled C++ lambdas prove retained mode boundaries, pending-command cancellation, watchdog renewal and successful OTA cleanup. Existing display/standalone behavior remains covered.
  • Observed result: 90 system tests pass with one optional API class skipped; all nine API tests pass with ESPHome 2026.9.0. Twenty-one mode scenarios include the reproductions; the previous production source produced eight assertion failures across five tests.
  • Full isolated local MQTT firmware build passes with ESPHome 2026.9.0, config hash 0x6a9cb288, and synthetic credentials, broker, local fonts and label. No live device, shared builder or fleet test is used.

AI assistance

Codex assisted implementation and verification. Source changes are limited to the MQTT profile. The author checked the semantic diff, test execution and full firmware compilation.

Walkthrough

The MQTT plant profile updates maintenance, storage, watchdog, cycle, and battery handling. The native test executor adds control-mode support. A new offline suite validates maintenance and storage behavior and MQTT contracts.

Changes

Maintenance and storage control

Layer / File(s) Summary
Control test runtime
tests/display_automation.py
The executor supports control-mode scripts and state, evaluates mqtt.connected, and records component updates, display-page selection, and template-switch publications.
Maintenance and storage policy
examples/multi-device/packages/smart_plant_profile_mqtt.yaml
The profile stops watchdog and asynchronous cycle work at control boundaries, ignores duplicate storage states, and accepts only finite battery values.
Offline regression suite
tests/test_maintenance_storage.py
The offline tests cover battery admission, maintenance precedence, storage transitions, cancellation, acknowledgements, persistence, MQTT contracts, and restored runtime state.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7e1c9

No outstanding defect was established in the maintenance and storage transitions. The PR is mergeable after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e6d7f

The changes tighten existing remote-control lifecycle safeguards without adding new command channels or weakening authentication. No introduced security defect was established. Residual uncertainty remains around device scheduling, broker delivery and reboot persistence, which offline simulation cannot fully verify.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A principal able to publish accepted commands under a device's MQTT prefix can influence its maintenance/storage lifecycle and sleep behavior, as before this PR. The reusable profile can affect devices deploying it, but maximum independently attackable fleet scope cannot be determined without deployed broker authorization and credential-sharing information.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected changes do not establish a new attacker-controlled route to privileged operations: existing desired-state callbacks gain cancellation and validation, while expanded test entrypoints retain local execution and recorded outputs. This bounded conclusion does not establish complete security coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — MQTT credentials, native-API encryption and the separate OTA password remain configured through existing substitutions and are unchanged by this PR. Maintenance state affects lifecycle readiness; it does not replace the OTA password control. Effective broker ACLs and deployed secret values were not supplied or evaluated.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation reuses the existing display cleanup boundary rather than bypassing it. That boundary releases pending reset and invalidates old sleep work; final shutdown still checks both cached display safety and the live BUSY pin before switching off the sensor rail and sleeping.
